i wonder to myself if that young man has any idea how incredibly fortunate he is just to have touched that corsairs wing, my favorite plane , so much artistry in metal and history ,lucky man
@qHighFlyerp lol are you drunk, quality is the best, but in the long run quantity is better. haha fucking idiot, shove ur head out of ur ass and think again XD lol!!
Seeing the Corsair, I just can't help but remember Baa Baa Black Sheep. I wonder what the Zero and Kate pilots thought when they first saw this comming at them?
I'll bet the F4U was a handful to put back on the ground...in the landing attitude you couldn't see over the nose and had to watch the side of the runway for visual cues. I once owned a '41 Steaman and it was the same way.....except a lot slower. Its tall, stiff narrow landing gear made it tricky to land too...especially in a cross wind. I only ground looped it once...thereafter I only took it out on very calm days. I understand the Bf109 was tricky too for the same reasons.
A question, how did the F4U Corsair and F-4 Phantom didn't get in conflict in registry? I mean they both have F4 having the difference of U for the corsair and other letters for the Phantom.
And by the time the F4U Corsair was built, does F already meant Fighter? Cause back then, ain't the Allied Aircrafts using P (pursuit) for their Fighters?
This is one of the planes that helped us take back the Pacific. And there's just something about those wings that makes this plane look so cool. At least I think so
Not sure about it being called 'Whistling Death' However and I Quote 'Whispering Death' was the name the Japanese gave to the Bristol Beaufighter when it went into service in the Far East.
Just been reading about the stripping back to its original paintwork of KD431 at Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm museum , UK. But you can't beat hearing and seeing these WWII planes flying. You've got to love theF4U Corsair with its huge prop and characteristic gull wings. Thanks good vid.
@stewjw: Hey, thanks for watching my video. When you say that you've been reading about the "archaeological" investigation of Corsair KD431, I am assuming you are talking about the book "The Time Capsule Fighter; Corsair KD431." I have the book and have read it; just fascinating!
The "whistling death" sound is made by the oil coolers in the leading edge of the wings. The Corsair was an amazing plane - the first plane we had in the war that would do over 400 in level fight. Thanks for posting this, even though 25 idiots with no taste gave it a thumbs down, the rest of us appreciate it!
@m1t2a1 AIRFLOW through the oil coolers DOES make noise - otherwise all supercharged airplanes would make the same whistling noise, right? The sound was specific to the Corsair because of the leading edge mounted oil coolers and the shape of the cooling vanes in those oil coolers.
I think one of the best kills in WWII was made by a Corsair. Some pilot (Forgot his name) Actually downed an aircraft with the propeller because it was so gigantic.
Zero: Nimble fast plane which could get shot down with a BB gun... heheheh, F4U: A BEAST SPORTING 6 .50 CAL, TOUGH, FAST, NIMBLE... only one airplane beats this, the MUSTANG!
Well done, notwithstanding the audio casualty. What peak torque @ rpm is typical of the R-2800? That would have a bearing on throttle and prop pitch for a "your signal max conserve" order when holding on station or over the carrier.
Its got a realy nice shape but I think the engine wants to tell every one that ..I AM FUCKING RETIRED!!!!!!!!! Now piss off and leave me alone in the museum or get me a new power plant for this fucker if you wanna see it fly!
Not a pretty aeroplane, but it provided the goods in just the right amount. Easy to build and maintain, long range (the long nose is due to an extra tank that was shoehorned in between pilot and engine), fast (especially with emergency water injection) and well armed and armoured. Brits used them on carriers first after the US Navy had said they were too dangerous due to poor forward vision (due to that long nose). One of my favourites. I think they had a 17 to 1 kill ratio.
@lucittm Nope, two rows of nine cylinders, 18 cylinder engine. The biggest was the R-4360,four rows of seven cylinders, 28 total, supercharged, injected. Mostly used on bombers and larger aircraft, six of them powered the Convair B-36 peacekeeper, set up as pushers with dual counterrotating props and two jet engine pods to assist on takeoff.
@Oldbmwr100rs I'ts my understanding that the USN prefered radial engines over in-line engines because a radial could lose one or two cylinders and still get you home while an in-line would most likely sieze up. How much of a gas-guzzler was it compared to a 38's Allison, a 51's Packard/Merlin, or a 47's Pratt/Whitney? Just curious. Thanx
@TheSV3 Another big and the major reason behind radials was weight to power ratio as well as less complexity,at least from the point of not having water cooling. The Nave was running an air racing series throughout the 20's and 30's to have companies push aircraft engine design to it's limits, and it paid off in the end with these huge engines.
I have no idea what the consumption was like with then, but I'd figure in pounds per minute range when the throttle was firewalled!
@Oldbmwr100rs Good enough. I've understood that an air-cooled enginge was "superior" to a liquid-cooled for the same reasons: easy to main & less tendency to sieze up if hit. As far as fuel consumption goes, combat WILL make a big difference from cruise speed; both of which I'm after, but I can find that out for myself. Thanx again for your reply.
What I find amusing is that the US Navy rejected the Corsair as a carrier plane, only changing their mind after seeing the Royal Navy master its use on their flattops.
If you are strictly speaking about the "fighter" (and not ground attack) catagory, the 109 woud have little chance against the Corsair. The 190, on the other hand, is the superior aricraft of the two at altitude. It was lighter but had (roughly) the same horsepower so was both faster and more manuverable. The call it the "Butcher Bird" for a good reason. .
Vought FU. I mean F4U. EASILY as pretty as the Mustang (D model) or Spitfire. Maybe even more so in some ways. Then again, a P-38 Lightning or a P-40 with a great big smile, just may be the ticket. Let us not even speak of Yaks, Zeros or Messerschmitts.
While it became an effective fighter plane, the F4u had many troubles.Designed as carrier based fighter, it was extremely dangerous to take off and land. This was due to a bouncing problem. It also had a nasty high stall speed that caused the plane to death spin as it had a funny balance point and a very heavy propeller.
Having had the chance to know a corsair pilot from ww2 and actually meet a test pilot for Vaught Sikorsky it was discovered that the louvers on the oil coolers actually causer the whistling .
One of the most beautiful airplanes ever built. Inverted gull wings to allow for the twelve foot ( I think ) prop. Carriier based if needed. A USN and USMC big ole can of flying whoop ass.

My Dad told me after the WWll you could pick one up for 800.00-1000.00 bucks if you kept your eye open with no gas in it.....Scrap it or fly it..just aluminum.. he said it was no big deal to see them lined up on tarmacks, as with everything after the war we had tons of it, and nothing to do with it! fighter aircraft were worthless and useless..if you couldnt make a buck with it!

A lot of people don't know that this plane had the highest kill/death ratio in WWII. 10:1
MercenarySlick 2 weeks ago
Close but not quite. The F6F Hellcat racked up 19:1 on average and even against the best Japanese fighters, it still scored at least 3 or 4:1.
The F4U and F6F were known as the "Terrible Twins". The F4U shot down 2,140 planes
for the loss of 189, 11:1.
I'd have loved to fly one in WW2.
sackitt16 1 week ago
@sackitt16 Do the kills accredited to the Hellcat include planes that were destroyed while on the ground?

No, it seems that the ratio scored by the Hellcat pertains to air combat only.
