@77isaacpismo77 - Ahhh, thats not good to use. You can use blending stumps or rubber blenders those are the best to use for charcoal or pastels, if you have neither you can use qtips, but qtips work best for charcoal.

you can blend every part of the iris but i can advise you using "bristoll" paper, the surface is really soft then you can draw every iris details without aving that (granular effect) that you don't like. plus this type of paper is easy to erase, so no finger traces ^^
