My first assignment in the AF(1979-82) was Myrtle Beach, sadly it is gone also. So this song really means a lot and takes me back every time I hear it
This song makes me miss myrtle beach the way it used to be i live here and most of the stuff in those pics is gone like the pavilion they tore it down a years ago and most of the bars and clubs have closed down the only one that don't play crappy rap on the blvd is the Bowery. I wish all those greedy old yanks would stay out of the south cause all they want is money which is way theres more condos and giant luxury hotels then there is beach now days they would build in the ocean if they could!
Fabulous song - an all time forever favorite. You don't have to be from either North or South Carolina to appreciate this - not at all. I am from Virginia and have many, many golden, wonderful memories and I appreciate this song tremendously. It is a song that will last forever. The appreciation of this song has nothing to do with where your permanent residence is, it has everything to do with the memories made over many summers! Thank you for this great post.
@dunnlanguage41 Small world as they say; I know Danville because I grew up in Lynchburg! Not too many miles between. I went to E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg. I live in Richmond now and before that I lived in Virginia Beach. Lucky you getting to live the summers at the beach. When my family went, it was usually for the typical 2 week vacation. I have always lived in Virginia. It is nice to "meet" someone so close to home. This has never happened before!
@0917gva wanna hear something crazier ? im actually living in lynchburg now ! i stated the physical therapy program last year at lynchburg college and am finishing my first year this week ! 2 more years in lynchburg then ill go wherever the lord takes me....maybe back to old MB ! haha
@dunnlanguage41 That really is something!! I am very impressed & you are getting into a field for which there will ALWAYS be a need. I knew it took a lot of training, but I had no idea how much! Lynchburg was a nice place to grow up and, of course, I have a lot of memories as you would from growing up in Danville. I should imagine it is also good because you probably still have relatives in Danville & it is always a blessing to have family close by. No one cares 4U like family!
I am redoing my YT account because I closed my other one and, of course, knew I had this song. I looked just below this comment box and see that I commented on this "1 month ago." I shall just stick by what I wrote under my gva0917 because it is true. Thank you!
This one surely does bring back fantastic memories - a completely different world then and absolutely the best of times. Ah, sweet youth, shagging with someone you were crazy in love with it. Kissing on the beach, holding hands. It is just a feeling you have in your heart and soul and it become a part of you - like genetic encoding. Love it!! Thank you for a fantastic post.
Yeah, the Pavilion's still an empty space, but that new SkyWheel is gonna be awesome to see this summer! =) That is, until, and give it time, 'til someone greedy gets tired of it and says, It ain't making enough money, let's tear it down. LOL I hope that new Wheel stays up for years to come! I hope it's there in the next 25 or 30 years+....We'll see won't we?
It was/still is heartbreaking the the moneygrubbers were so hellbent on destroying the history and memories of the Pavilion. I came here in the eighties and was immediately in LOVE. I have lived here now for 12 years and cannot believe that the Pavilion is GONE. Thanks SO MUCH B&C! Their wildest imaginings to develop that land will NEVER replace what the Pavilion created for generations. And the land is still empty.

It's heartbreaking to me that the Grand Strand is no more. I went there with my family every year since birth and we made so many wonderful memories. It was so evocative of a simpler time, and it was a place where you couldn't help but be happy. Thanks for reminding me!
Man i get chills everytime i hear this song. Anyone not from Carolina can never know or encompass what ALabama sings about in this song. I mean it's more than a tourist locale. It's just a whole other kinda mindset. It is sucha great place and I miss it so friggin much! And shaggin IS, HAS BEEN, AND EVER WILL remain the BEST DANCE EVER!!!!!
@Bubba167712 I feel you my man! I remember being sooo drunk one night at the Fat Jacks & the bouncer took me in the back and told me to lay down-called a cab and then payed for it. Only in the Carolinas!!!!
@Bubba167712 LOL I don't know about the shag being the best dance part but...yeah if you don't go to Myrtle Beach you can't understand the greatness of this song.

I spent a lot of time at Myrtle Beach in the early 1960's. Remember " Ben C Lae" &
the Continental Hotel ? The Pavillion ? Sun Fun ? mom & pop motels? sun burned legs & back....I guess now, too much change...nothin' lasts forever !
