  • ubuntu is better

  • you sound very wrong man... "I've been having a good time with my friend today" and not to forget "ive been working on it all day today... and I've been havin a real good time" LOL

  • Thanks for the video. just heard about Mint and was considering switching over, but looks like I will hold off or make a VM out of it. Thanks!

  • What do you think of 11.10? I absolutely hate it. Going to install Mint now.

  • @tinosnit

i'm having trouble with 11.10 too the 64 bit version( the 32 bit version works great but doesn't use half of my total memory), was hoping mint could do better but sounds worse from this video.

  • @THE16THPHANTOM Mint had too many bugs for me. Then I tried Kubuntu which also had too many bugs. I've been using Xubuntu and it works great! Not as polished, though.

  • both are lean mean linux OSs! love linux and am using ubuntu 11.04 and haven't used windows for anything other than windows specific programs since!

  • thank you for this. im battling between linux mint and Lubuntu (not ubuntu) the reason being is lubuntu is so lightweight and my laptop isnt THAT powerful

so this video helped a bit. i WAS going to get BAckTrak but im so glad i didnt.

  • Interesting to see this after installing mint 11 today. Much has changed since then!

  • Great video, thank you so much for going into so much detail between the two distros. I have used Ubuntu for a while now but when I heard of Mint I decided to do some research and found your video. I wonder how Mint 11 compares to Ubuntu 11.04. Thanks for going into a lot of the differences between the two.

  • @DLiberator78 Hey thanks! That means a lot. Good luck in Linux. I've been more into Web apps and news feeds more than OS's lately.

  • please tell me where to download the same exact OS as you have in this video? i have been looking forever....

  • @crazzydude14 Just go to "ubuntu . com" and "linuxmint . com" . But there are now newer Versions.

  • @thatsmyh0rse already tried; no luck. i was hoping for him to send me a direct link to the download site. plus i dont want the newer version i want this version.

  • Ubuntu gui colors under gnome are very easy to customize. You don't have to keep the default look.

Default gui is for wiindows and mac.

  • Yo. just posting this up so you can identify something. i full installed linux mint. sound works fine. in jack and in speakers. brighntess works fine. and i didnt need to type in any codes or edit settings for that. just out of the box. so...yea

  • Hay mate, my brightness thing didnt work either, I had to add a repository for my thing and then it works!!! Idk, maby this will fix your sound thing too (I havent tried that yet)

  • I use linux ubuntu i like that way better but linux mint is for people who are just starting out for there first time with linux i agree with you @dndepisode67

  • Linux Ubuntu is the best!!!

  • Linux Mint is good for noobies but its slow. Atleast for me, every other distro is fine.

  • nice review video ... I think the same about my Openbsd

  • for a non Linux user, Mint 10 is the most pleasing . Most similar to windows style

but it's still very basic in it's abilities not in what it could do but hardware software support.

I agree with you on the Software Manager, Ubuntu is a much nicer looking version. Mint could do with name changing for the repositories etc. instead of just code names.

For me personally Mint 10 looks cleaner and more professional and so far only bugs i've noticed are programs locking up like windows does

  • mint 10 rocks!

  • @FlamingGaming1

mint is great too... the only think tht i hate in ubuntu is the start menu

  • I went with Linux Mint, with Ubuntu, I needed an internet connection to get ndiswrapper....really, I need internet to get internet? Linux Mint comes with ndiswrapper, flash, and other cool pre-installed programs. Ubuntu is the stripped down version of generic linux, blech! Ubuntu also had glitches that I haven't had any problems with Linux Mint.

  • WOW very impressive!!!

  • I use Linux Mint 9 Isadora and Xubuntu Carmic Coala. They are both excellent. Unfortunately a friend of mine took my linux PC because his own was an old one, so I construct a new linux PC over now it will be a Pentium dual core. As soon as will be ready, I will reinstall Mint 9 :-)

  • U HAVE THE SAME LAPTOP AS ME!!

  • We have the same laptop!

  • @stmpoodle otally agree about the software manager! but i can tell your very inteligant. but you just dont know enough.well you know to stay away from mac and windows.

lol i do use windows tho, windows 7 and linux mint juliet (10) dual booted on my dualcore intell 2.5 ghz 4 gb true 64 bit processor and os.

  • The answer to your question about the icon for switching your desktop is to: right click the menu bar you want it on, click "Add to Panel", in that menu scroll down to the bottom and it should be called "workspace switcher". Just add that and itll be there. Hope i helped.

  • the only other OS that's a mix of mint and Ubuntu is Super OS

  • Linux mint 9 is ubuntu....

  • @Feliexxxxxxxx yep mint is basically Ubuntu with the shiki wise theme so it's green instead of orange, and mint allows flash, java support out of the box whereas on Ubuntu you have to install those, but honestly it's not that big of a deal as people like to make it. running my machine off a live cd I use mint so I can watch flash but for a full on install I'd be more inclined for Ubuntu and just theme it to look like Mint if I want it to look like Linux Mint.

  • Nice video dude!

  • @JeffTheComputerGeek Thanks! Subscribe. I'll do some more videos just like this very soon.

  • its a nice and relevant review. basiclly i feel the same way too. mint is elegant and more friendly to newbies, but if u want to be serious i think ubuntu is the rational choice.

why not make a review of Linux Mint 9 KDE vs Kubuntu? I think Linux Mint KDE is a way greater version than Kubuntu, but I won't make a statement till someone else confirms my impression :-) Just want to see what others think and I think you'd provide a similarly interesting review. Cheers!

  • put emerald theme manager on it and you can use glass themes and what not

  • linux mint is very pretty and there really is no difference. i use both and love them both.

  • linux mint 9 is hard in configuring compiz .... but ubuntu is as easy as ABC

completely agree with ubuntu , the problem with mint is not much apps are there

but ubuntu has hell lot of apps but mint is faster

  • @payam1995

Most ubuntu apps run on mint since they are the same basically.

  • thank you for your review. I'm a windows user for 13 years and been for a week playing with ubuntu 10.04, 10.10RC, and now just about to install 10.10 final.

My biggest concern currently is the plug and play. i have to connect to my LAN to get STA drivers for my wifi.

I was about to download mint today and saw this. Its a good thing you said, for windows switcher i should try mint, then ubuntu.

Wish me luck and more power to ubuntu.

Linux: work on your plug n play, the rest i can learn

  • I think you can't compare these distros.

why? because linux mint is a derivative from Ubuntu...

  • I'm on a dell studio15 running linux mint, and all the specialbottons worked out of the box (sound started workig after the second install though)

  • I think that GUI in linux just doesn't look as polished as Windows. The little things like the font being vertically aligned and the buttons being centered stand out more than you think.

  • did u figure out how to get the four windows [desktops] on linux mint 9 i figured out how to text me back.

    to: stmpoodle

  • i liked linux mint before i knew about Super Os

  • Nice review! Most reviewers have overlooked some of the important stuff you mentioned (like the poor software center). Despite what most Mint fans seem to think, I think it's more suited to people with prior linux experience overall.

When they redesign the main menu and get the software center organised a bit, it will be a real contender. But at the moment, Ubuntu is the easiest one to leave on someones machine and not have to talk them through stuff every other day.

  • Good Video "Tom Hanks" LOL

  • Love your video bro, your review is very clear and helpful

  • it's add to panel -> work space switcher back in Ubuntu...

  • To get your workspace switcher right click on the panel you want to add it add it to, click add to panel, scroll down ( or search for workspace switcher ), select workspace switcher, select add to panel.

To move its location on the toolbar or add more workspaces (also able to do in compiz) right click on it select preferences, and change that up. Or add to move it right click and select move.

  • dude mint 9 is based on Ubuntu 10.04. it's just the KDE version of 10.04. I'm all for Ubuntu :) KDE has too many problems

  • i dont like how gnome looks on mint, thats why i dont use it,and stick with ubuntu.

  • Thanks. I'm testing both Live CDs right now.

  • 3:49 if you dont know how to add a workplace switcher, then yes you are a noob

  • I wish i could install ubuntu 10.4 but i have a ati 5970 and it only worked on linux mint 9 isadora (64-bit)

  • If people don't like that slab menu in Mint then switch it then to the classic one :P

  • Ow wow... I just google'd Linux Mint vs ubuntu and the first thing comming up is this video... Nice stmpoodle. :-)

  • @polopolo150 No wonder this is getting so many views. I nearly took this video down when I switched technology chat over to droadtrip channel but this video was growing in popularity so I left it alone.

  • Ubuntu 10.04 has the wifi indicator and whenever u have less signal one of the lines on the indicator goes away... like the bars on a cellphone.

  • Thanks for the video.

I think the most frustrating thing in LinuxMint is its menu. it's graphically ugly :P

They should redesign it to be easier to users eyes. the first thing you see after launching it is the system section. My eyes doesn't expect to see the marginal apps in the beginning. Another thing about this menu is that it has no border at all. the icons and titles are very close to the edges.

  • @shrinux I agree entirely. The menu was ok back in Linux Mint 7 but now as Windows further distances their look away from XP, but Linux Mint is the same, well, they need a fresh overhaul is what I think now.

  • @shrinux Welcome to the linux community. I am also a Linux user. I am running Zorin OS 4. This is an Ubuntu base distro. but with added more stuff.

  • Happy birthday Debian! - KDE > GNOME *ducks*

  • ppl who are arguing that mint has less software/driver bugs than ubuntu - open your eyes! Mint and Ubuntu are the same core distros, only linux mint has some changes in graphical interface and installed softwares. its like two identical twins wearing different dresses.

  • I have GNU/Linux Mint 9 on that exact same laptop. I used to have Ubuntu but I changed and never looked back , it worked straight after install. I just had to install skype and I was away. I haven't even thought about changing the theme.

  • one bug i found in ubuntu 10.04 i have here is i added a theme and it didn't take. it added to the list but was no place in menu items to choose it. but other then that

i really like my 10.04. and everything on my toshiba laptop works :-)

  • one bug i found in ubuntu 10.04 i have here is i added a theme and it didn't take. it added to the list but was no place in menu items to choose it. but other then that

i really like my 10.04. and everything on my toshiba laptop works :-)

  • Ubuntu 10.04 DOES indeed tell you the percent of wireless connection, hell I'm looking at it right now.

  • What is this guy talking about with the wireless in 10.04 not giving a percentage...? If you hover over it, it gives you a percentage and the icon shows you from how it looks.

Also what are you talking about with the wallpaper switcher? It depends on your wallpaper switch I use Wallpaper Tray and it transitions through wallpapers very smoothly, that has nothing to do with the OS though, that's an application.

  • i gotta say, i might be the only one that prefers ubuntu over linux mint.

i mean, it's not a big deal of a difference, because you can always change and customize either OS to your liking.. but theres some little things that i prefer in ubuntu.

like synaptic, update mgr, and ubuntu software ctr. they're just easier to use and provide more useful info, imo, than mint's package mgr and update prgm..

and ive always had the same bugs in mint that i've had in the ubuntu counterpart.

    ubuntu ftw 4 me

  • Nnnnnnneeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrddddddd!

  • @noreplyism stmpoodle isn't a nerd. He's a geek. (geeks are better than nerds)

  • I like both Ubuntu 10.4 and Linux Mint 9. I have it on two different machines. Linux Mint is a lot more easier to use out of the box, but once Ubuntu 10.4 is configured it works great and is very light and fast. I had to configure firefox in ubuntu because it just wouldn't /didn't work.

  • ubuntu is better for my

  • My Linux distro will always be Ubuntu. Why? Coz it hasn't let me down from day one :)

  • I wouldn't use Mint after getting used to linux. It comes with so much software that the system is already bloated when it is installed. With Ubuntu you get a lot less of the bloat. Personally, I would use Arch but i'm not going to recommend that to anyone because it is hellish to learn how to install.

  • i recommend some sideburns

  • Hi frank!

this is an awesome video. i enjoyed it watching. i was thinking to shift from 10.04 to mint. but now, i will wait for some more time.

i dunno whether u hav already pointed this thing before but there is something seriously wrong with 'My Computer'... plz check the link and check out my findings... if u could bring this up in ur next video it will certainly help reach the developers... thanks!

    ubuntufanclub(.)blogspot(.)com/2010/01/change-display-layout-of-my-computer(.)html

  • Agree 7 was far better Mint 9 is buggy and simply not as good. I've got rid of Mint 9 it's simply not up to par.

  • Cool video, I think Mint's better cuz it has more codecs preinstalled, plus compiz.

  • @stmpoodle well i have a dell 1501 laptop with mint 9 and all works just fine

  • u shuda used a screen recorder bro jaja yeah im a linux fan windows goes #1 for me (although i dont care for it) becuase it has what i need and tfhe plugins and support i need. Linux right now (for my needs) is pretty worthless and limitting but as an OS thats free i love to try it and put it down for a while and pick it up agn.I hope Mint ubuntu all other distros etc will continue to advance with better and better software(they have good stuff some of wich needs alot of work plugins and stuff).

  • It's funny actually, I love Ubuntu too, but for some reason Linux Mint 9 (and 8 back in the day) work better on my hardware than their respective Ubuntu counterparts. Mint for me is more rock solid and better compiz performance, as well as the video codecs seem to perform better on my poor old ATI (fail in Linux, believe me I know!) than in Ubuntu. For me personally even though I'm far from a Linux newbie, Mint is the king ;)

  • where can i find your wallpaper?

  • @liam12189 right click on ur desktop and go to "change background"

  • I'm so with you, I think mint is a great os but i just personal moved beyond the need for a unified task bar/start menu (although the mint menu is awesome).

I'm however not sure if it is a good idea to recommend it to my mom, See has been using xp since like for ever, and the bugs (those new ones) are just getting to big. What is your opinion on this?

  • I'm terribly sorry that you can find the "workplace switcher" for the task bar.

  • Great video! I have tried Ubuntu and Mint. I have to say Ubuntu is fantastic on my desktop computer. However, after I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop, it was always above normal temperature. So I put Mint 9 on it instead, and I found it ran much cooler than Ubuntu. Might just be my laptop.

  • Christ! Stop whinging!

  • This is why I went back to Windows.

  • i mean 70% of ubuntu bugs are fixed on mint before release.

  • hey man nice video. about the sound did you try my suggestion that i posted for you? in a message??? the sound can be fixed. yes some ubuntu bugs are still there. but i would say mint fixes 70 of ubuntu bugs before releasing a new linux mint release.

  • It doesn't matter to me, just as long as it works, it's fast, customizable, and has support and that I can get the job done.

  • Ubuntu 10.04 works fine for me, both on laptop and PC.

the days of ATi problems i guess are over.

I used Mint but I don't like the menu system. I don't really know which

is better, only difference I saw was mint ran a little slower than ubuntu for me.

  • @stmpoodle now you need to review fedora 13 since it came out

  • Thanks

  • Great informative video. Thanks.

  • Thanks

  • Software Manager is awesome dude! .

It's always updated so we don't have to struggle with updating the links...

It's perfect. Add/remove was okay but you always had to update it. It's automatic now/

  • Great video! Yeah my gf wants to use Linux Mint 9 and I still dunno if all her hardware in her laptop is compatible. I love Ubuntu 10.04 but my problem is that I like too many linux distros and can't seem to stick with only one..

  • you look like hobbs

  • That "4 window icon' area on the taskbar/panel is called workspaces, if you want those back, right click on the panel, add to panel, scroll down to the bottom and you'll find "workspace switcher" you can set as many workspaces as you want.

  • Hello stmpoodle. I've installed gnome games from the package manager without the least trouble. To get the windows switcher, you have to click on the bottom bar and select 'Menu Switcher' from the 'Add To' menu that it brings up. Then, I think it's probably best to move the separator to include your new Windows Switcher in the right hand group along with the Volume Control and the Date.

    Hope this helps!

  • both of these distro's will either perform great or fail miserably depending on the hardware. for instance, i'm typing on a toshiba t135-s1310 laptop. prior to ubuntu 10.04 neither mint nor ubuntu would work on it. now with 10.04 its damn near perfect.

  • Hello again! I've just installed Isadora on a disk I was running Ubuntu 9.04 on and it rocks! Seventeen minutes for a clean install, a few minutes to tidy up the graphics and sound and it is humming! Troubles to come - maybe - but at the minute, this looks sweet!

Thanks for your videos, and keep making them.

  • Wow those hardware issues are rather unfortunate, everything works fine in Ubuntu 10.04 for me even on my Apple iBook G4 (PowerPC port)

  • I actually love the software manager in mint, it's one of my favorite features.

  • @stmpoodle It seems that many linux geeks like to blame others problems on hardware. Its the software people! If the hardware plays fine on windowsxp on not well on other computers too its the software! I'm frustrated with sound issues! Help!

  • Back to the cs46xx chipset sound problems with linuxmint 9. Linuxmint 8 played fine and windowsxp sound is fine. Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 have this issue also. They must get the basics rock solid such as sound and video. This is bad. They have had several years to deal with a widely used chipset and yet the problem persists. I had reported this problem with earlier Ubuntu distros as well. Until these basic problems are straightened out I'm back to windowsxp.

  • hey frank, was gonna do a comparison myself,as i now have another test machine (lucky me) but now will leave it for a bit as have a lot of other stuff to do..

as for your probs with headphone and brightness, there are fixes for it,or just wait for 10 days(i would go with the wait...lol)

    catch ya soon..

  • You're talking about the workspaces. Just right click the panel at the bottom (Find an empty area), click "Add to Panel" and look for "workspace switcher". LM9 is nice, but I would rather stick to Ubuntu if anything. They are so similar but at the same time, Ubuntu has already made it easy to get the codecs and stuff. Other then that, I love Arch Linux.

  • A very good comparison video you've made. I had tried Linux Mint and liked it, but it didn't do anything for me the way I use my computer running Ubuntu, I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that Linux Mint would be more suited for people coming from a Windows background.

I guess the reason Linux Mint isn't as good as Ubuntu even though it's a spin-off, is the fact that they don't have a full development team which is daft seeing as they want it to be mainstream.

    Great video.

  • I like Ubuntu and Mint. The only thing I dont like on Mint is the software center. Well, thats the only thing... Its almost the same. Mint is a bit more tweaked.

If you still need to know how to get the windows; right click on the bar, add to panel, workspace changer.

    =D

  • I prefer Mint and put 9 on my laptop yesterday, so far ive been lucky and everything seems to work. Even those problems you have with brightness dont seem to be happening w my Dell Inspiron. I'm going to update my HTPC's to Mint 9 this weekend. I like ubuntu, but my preference is mint. Mint doesn't force you to use the update manager. just thought that should be pointed out. Good video

  • Nice video - thanks. As you say, it's mainly subjective; for me, Mint 7 is still the best distro I've come across, although running Isadora live was a lot of fun. I'll probably try it on one of my hard drives when I can spare an hour away from the 'net!

  • if Mint don't use Ubuntu as base and Use Debian maybe it will be a serious distro.

  • @kaltsinho With Mint's overwhelming popularity, I feel it is time for them to branch away from Ubuntu on its own.

  • @kaltsinho There is Linux Mint 9 Debian. Check them out!

  • Thanks very much for the mention and for coming to the live show! I have SO much fun doing the live streams, and I'm glad that people are enjoying them.

  • You make valid points on both OS's. I use Thinkpads to test Linux. For me, Mint 9 is less buggy than Lucid....both run slower than their previous versions. There was a known bug about memory leak in Lucid Lynx before release and released anyway.

Reminds me of Vista...on this one the developers botched it. Both Karmic Koala and Linux Mint 8 ran flawlessly.

  • @tostoday Why would they release this with a known bug, errrrrr!

  • @jimbobubbadj Good question...

  • maybe it's just your hardware. becuase I haven't seen these problems...but..great vid..

  • @TheMichaelBender The probably is with A LOT of people's hardware. My Thinkpad = Flawless, My GF's compaq = Nvidia driver problems & won't shutdown, My backup Gateway 7330 = Will not boot from LiveCD & desktop effects inoperable even though they worked in 9.10. These Canonical cats deserve a scolding for jeopardizing the stable image of Ubuntu.

  • Great review & great job Frank. I've used Mint 8 religiously in the past however the Ubuntu One/Music feature in 10.04 won me over. Unfortunately 10.04 has some terrible bugs in it that doesn't allow it to shutdown, boot from live CD, and another with Nvidia drivers. The shutdown and boot bugs are devastating bugs that really disappointed me. The folks at Conanical really need to get their act together. Great distro but they need to make sure it works before releasing it to the masses!

  • @nvanadium Canonical is a worldwide corporation which I hope will begin to purposefully delay future versions until more bugs are resolved. This is crazy to tout the best OS and all the professional reviews only to have these things strike us like this. I still enjoy Ubuntu, but still have to migrate between Windows until they get it right. Nobody thinks poorly of OpenSuse when they delay their offering dates to further resolve issues. Thanks for participating!

  • @stmpoodle I hope for the same. In the mean time I hope they decide to do the right thing and fix all these critical bugs and re-stream the ISO so people can finally get the ultimate Linux experience we've all been waiting for.

  • @stmpoodle Couldn't have said it better myself. Until ubuntu fixes their mess with 10.04 i just wont use it. It's the most buggy release i've come across from canonical. They deliberately released plymouth & nouveau knowing they weren't ready & when a distro has that sort of release policy for me it's time to switch distro.

As for the screen brightness i wouldn't be surprised if this was because of hal being replaced with devicekit.

  • @codebean Dittos Bro!

  • I was going to do this same video..because..i have mint 9 on my.nettop...and ubuntu 10.04 on my notebook and netbook..

  • Have you got any recommendation for laptops for running Linux? Tablets?

  • yeah, its right click the taskbar, add to panel, and its called "workspace switcher"

  • You may disagree but does this release of Ubuntu seem to have more bugs than usual? 9.04s main bug was the sound not working on some peoples systems, then on 9.10 there was quite a few tedious bugs but on 10.04 there seems to be many annoying bugs like the brightness, mouse themes not changing and etc.

I also agree about your views on the software centre, I dont know if it is just me but when I am installing stuff through the centre my computer goes REALLY slow. But oh well.

    Great video.

  • @dandaman06 More bugs indeed my friend. Unable to boot form LiveCD, unable to shutdown computer, NVidia drivers unable to properly load. So disappointing. I had high hopes for 10.04 but if I recommend it to anyone any they experience anyone of these bugs I'll just look like an ass. I sure hope they fix these bugs for the sake of their reputations.

  • @nvanadium Yea I agree.

I thought the guys at Linux Mint would have tried to fix these bugs but obviously not.

I think the guys at Ubuntu should have fixed the bugs before it was released even if it was released a month or 2 late after the announced date.

  • @nvanadium mint 9 vs ubuntu 10 yup, i cant even istall either, through cd,or usb , dam neuvou drivers

  • @dandaman06 I got sound issues too!

  • Linux Mint 9 Rocks i ben 4 days with Linux Mint 9 happy guy here maybe no more windows not need to Pirate windows no virus no registry cleaner Linux Mint 9 have all the codes AVI divx mpg FLV DVD all man this is my distro i love your videos nice job keep up bye.

  • Nice video

  • right click the taskbar, and click add to panel, the 4 desktop thing is in there somewhere.

  • I think a lot of the attraction of Mint to new users is that they don't have to install a lot of the popular codecs like they do in Ubuntu. As far as things that don't work is concerned, I've certainly learned that you have to make an effort to buy compatible hardware. I won't buy anything in the future that I haven't checked out on line first for compatibility!

  • I agree with you on everything your saying, mate. I like Linux Mint and Ubuntu. I use both

  • That's why i don't really care for ubuntu-based distros the buggs that are found in ubuntu are found in them too usually. You should be able to add workspaces by right clicking on the panel->items->add & select workspace.

  • Yay, finally :)

I always wanted to know the difference.

btw, Linux Mint is based on Debian or Ubuntu? I still don't know it. :(

  • @polopolo150 It's based on Ubuntu (which is based on Debian). :)

  • @polopolo150 Mint is a derivative of Ubuntu. While Ubuntu is derived from Debian.

They are all "children" of Debian so to speak.
