  • That little pygmy thing is so cool

  • People who have such knowledge and creativity are very rare to come across and luckily TedTalks has made it available for all of us to get Inspired and work on and Bring change rather than worrying on ACCENTS

  • Comment removed

  • She shud B working in APPLE's R&D

  • Very cool! I do wish she had had actually videos of patrons reacting to these exhibits (especially the ink-blot!), I would have loved to have seen that. I guess I'll just have to visit myself.

  • Does anyone know where this museum is?

  • fucking uncles .... LOL

  • It's so nice to see technology being developed in terms of emotional and social connection instead of military and economic efficiency. I do hope this kind of work continues. Thinking about it, early technology's biggest landmarks - stonehenge, the pyramids, the lasceaux caves - were all artistic / religious projects.

The posters who debated her accent had nothing to offer about using artistic goals to lead technology - please take it to an ESL website, it's irrelevant and inapropriate.

  • i want that teddy bear!!

  • Rather than appreciating her Art the whole Discussion seems to revolve around her Accent .... The speakers on TED aren't just some Hilly billies, they are highly qualified and most of them have dedicated their whole lives specializing on a Specific field . I found Aparna Rao's Art to be really good!

  • only 7 minutes? you rushed her through but give those hippies half an hour?

  • mic is too close to her mouth. all those wet clicky sounds are distracting.

  • this is so very incredibly amazing

  • I can't wait for our museums to be filled with these kinds of new "technology" art! Oldschool art is kinda getting boring... and in many cases, people abuse the old system (With cheap "abstract" art that no one likes or a child could do blind folded)

Like this is a bit "abstract", but at least it shows that the artists put effort in their work! Some abstract artists are just plain BAD and do not deserve to have their work posted in museums or anywhere!

  • The teddy bear acutally worked I paused the video and kinda didnt completely focus on the shape

  • Where can i buy some of this art?

  • Brilliant!

  • simply awesome!

  • I want a pgymy in my room, though it might be creepy when im trying to fall asleep, and they just come pop out xD

  • she is like raj from big bang theory :D

  • I want that teddy bear, really bad.

  • Wonderful.

  • this kind of people are truly the greats in our society because when they focus on a task, like their art, they use ingenuity to see it threw

  • she makes me wanna snuggle

  • brilliant on so many levels

    thanks for sharing

  • The Universal Teddy Bear thing reminds me a little of the SCP Foundation.

  • Brilliant brilliant!

  • I wish I was smart and had public speaking abilities......

  • The best thing about this Art is it has ELECTRONICS.......................like ipod

  • This is so creative! Really awesome work!

  • makes me proud to be indian

  • best TED art ever

  • HELLO!!!

  • this lady is incredible!!

  • My pygmies and I are going to rule the world someday! :D

  • I love this lady and her uncle! xD

  • that was most certainly one of the best art exhibits I've ever seen

  • I like that night sky teddy bear. :O Want...

  • Cool :)

  • Wow!

  • Those pygmies (pls. find a better name) would be lots of fun with cats.

  • 0:15 ... enough with that intro!!!!!1

  • @sladkajes I like the intro!

  • 9 people have no souls.

  • Get a fecking less sensitive mike TED already, Its bloody disgusting.

  • Delightful.

  • Indian men especially 30+ are lazy and basically think they're living in the 1950's when it comes to women.

  • cute work!

  • I'm not really into art but enjoyed this.

  • This is some awesome art- just look at the quality, fit and finish. How often do you see stuff this well designed, while being so inspired at the same time. I really like this, and i dont really have much of an appreciation for most art, especially the abstract kinds.

  • 0:15

  • That teddy bear was amazing. Right before she said that people would see it as a hole in the ceiling, I started seeing it exactly like that! I'd love to have one. :)

  • Someone give her a glass of water, please!!!

  • i REALLY REALLY want that teddy bear! <3

  • That was amazing!

  • Just the right kind of unusual. I love it!

  • @ytubeanon

    Apparently you are uncultured.

  • which such poor command of ze english one would expect her to speak slower...

  • @quaxk - did you read your own comment.

"which such poor command of ze english " - I think you meant "With such..."

"ze english" - really? that's wrong on so many levels.

Aparna Rao is an Indian, English is the official language of the Indian government, and the constitution of India is written in English. India also has the maximum number of English Speaking Individuals in the world. If she speaks English in a certain way, then thats the way to speak it. By the way, are u from England?

  • @sujaysukumar123 Hindi is the official language of the Indian government, with English being subsidiary. Further on, I speak Hindi with a foreign accent (not intended, though), does it mean I have the correct pronounciation?

  • @Ko252 - "I speak Hindi with a foreign accent (not intended, though), does it mean I have the correct pronounciation?" If maximum number of Hindi speakers spoke the way you spoke, then thats the way to speak it. English is "foreign" to every nation outside England. English was brought to other lands by British settlers and Invaders, it was brought to India, USA and Australia in the same way. But most of us accept the american english now without problems.

  • @sujaysukumar123 Wrong. Enligsh wasnt brought to India the same way as in the USA and Australia, since they would imply they actually settled into country, and with most of today's population being successors of these. That isnt the case in India. They settled, but then left, remember (1947). Further on, maximum number of Enligsh speaker doesnt speak as her, so your analogy is fail. What puzzles me, is why you want to adapt somebody else's language, when you have a grea one yourself.

  • @Ko252 - Haha, so what if the settlers left? They cant take back their English, its not movable property you know. India is the second largest English speaking nation in terms of population after the US. What puzzles me is why her accent should matter to you, when your own grammar is quite visibly poor.

  • @sujaysukumar123 I find it quite amusing, that you criticize my poor grammar, as you put it, while making illogical assertions yourself. 1) "Movable property". The same applies for german; will you define an Indian dialect for that as well? 2) "...second largest..." Still, most of the world doesnt speak Enligsh in the same manner as the average Indian. 3) "Englisth is ..." First of all, you didnt answer the question. And second, based on what? You are just making a groundless and weak assertion.

  • @sujaysukumar123 (conti.) 4) Whether he accepts is or not, isnt of any importance. Further on, your analogy (as all other you have made), is faulty. If this Christian translation of the Bible diverse significantly from the original, than it isnt the same GOD. 5) Regardless of biryani being a houshold dish in India; it doesnt make it an Indian dish. Following your logic; then noodles, pizza, thai should all be Indian dishes as well. 6) And pizza is Italian.

  • @Ko252 - Every form of Christianity is diverse, some say Mary is divine some dont, Baptists, Methodists, Catholics, Syrians, Coptics etc etc all have their own flavours of the religion, but every christian claims to be praying to the same Jesus of Nazreth. Similary, the US, India and Australia have different accents, but it's all English. I cant break the analogy down any further, I really hope you get it.

  • @Ko252 - 5) Biryani is an Indian dish, sorry to disappoint you, please google it. There are so many variants too Veg Biryani, Hyderabdai Biryani, Lucknowi Biryani etc.

No, noodles, pizza and thai are not Indian dishes - because these foods haven't yet become part of the Indian culture. I'm not claiming everything that passes through India is Indian.

  • @Ko252 - 6) pizza may be Italian, just like English is frm England. But if u accept Australian, S African nd US English, then pizza is vry much American too.

Again. I'm not claiming everything that passes through India is Indian.India has contributed immensley to the English that you speak, in terms of Etymology and literary works. The Anglo Indians have English as their spoken Language. So, if Australian, American and South African english is acceptable, I dont see why Indian English is not.

  • @Ko252 - First of all i suggest you google this List_of_English_words_of_Indian_origin. You probably use most of these INDIAN words in your English, and yet you take objection to accepting that English is as much Indian as it is Australian, South African or American.

  • @Ko252 - 1) It's upto a nation to adopt a language, if Indians didn't adopt German its just their choice. 2) Most of the world doesn't speak English in any particular way, so if one were to go with numbers, INDIAN way is far more favourable in comparison to Australian or South African. 3) what question are u expecting an answer for?

  • @Ko252 - "What puzzles me, is why you want to adapt somebody else's language, when you have a grea one yourself. " - English is very much Indian. If I told a European Christian why he was praying to Jesus, who was someone else's God (middle eastern), would he accept it? The mughals brought biryani to India, and now its a household dish here. The italians brought pizza to America. Similarly the British brought English to India, but now it's very much Indian.

  • @Ko252 - Hindi is the official language of the Indian government, with English being subsidiary - thanks for the info. My point being English is among the 2 official languages in India, which makes English very much an accepted and spoken language of the country. Obama, Bill Gates and Aparna Rao speak english with their respective accents. The british invaders brought English to USA and to India. So why do you treat Aparna Rao's accent differently? Skin color (or is it colour) perhaps?

  • @quaxk So, according to you, she has a poor command of the English language... because she has an accent?

I can't think of what else you might be commenting on as her English is excellent. I guess you just hate accents (even though everyone has one) for some unfathomable reason.

  • @jussts I wager she has a better command of grammar and syntax than he does

  • @jussts i agree with you except for the typical indian voice intonation, up down up down up down as if every other word is a question. it's not a particularly hard thing to correct if you're actually speaking proper english

  • @jussts I KNOW RITE WHAT A RACIST BASTERD

  • @quaxk "which such poor command of ze english one would expect her to speak slower"

I looked through your videos and tried to find one where you were speaking English, since your written English was poor and you were criticizing someone else's spoken English. All I found was a video of what I assume are your children speaking what I believe might be French. So now I'm really curious, how well do YOU speak English? Care to put it up against Ms. Rao's perfectly understandable English?

  • That's ART! not the shit that hippies do, hope more real artist like her come to the scene.

  • @DraskyVanderhoff THAT is art!

You show strong conviction but you amphasized the wrong word. Everyone figured out that it's art alright, but you want to tell us that this particular set of installations is art in your opinion.

Which is to say that you are wrong on both points, capitalisation and proposition.

  • @2nd3rd1st The right word is emphasised.

  • @sonyerectson Absolutely. It's only my third language, sorry. :)

  • @2nd3rd1st Third language? Then you are forgiven. I am impressed.

  • amazing

  • Apparently Indian culture is so naive and innocent that she doesn't see how the uncle phone is a giant phallic object, dominant/submissive roles clearly defined.

  • @ytubeanon or maybe you're just an idiot? get back under the bridge troll

  • @sreevysh Yawn, nothing better than an ad hominem reply, idiot? Watch how a real critic works: Her amateur presentation used material that was chronically out of date, constantly making excuses for the lack of quality. Show the best or don't bother at Ted.

  • @ytubeanon Show the best or don't bother? I can think of countless TED talks that were worse and most people seem to agree with me that this was one of the better TED talks. And a real critic doesn't go around making immature jokes about people's culture. Time to tone down your arrogance I think

  • @sreevysh Boy, you are such a dimwit you apparently only know one word: arrogant. Look at your comment to pgthinker007 watch?v=eE9qdt9MZ64 calling him arrogant and you were so stupid you then had to say "ohhh sorry. i completely misunderstood what you were saying. " This is how you spend all your time, do us all a favor and shutup already you unoriginal one-note asshole.

  • @ytubeanon and you spend your time stalking and insulting random people on youtube? and what's wrong calling people who are arrogant, arrogant?

  • @ytubeanon most things shown at ted are on going works in progress. That's usually how technology works.

  • @ytubeanon Methinks someone is obssessed with penises.

  • @ciaochowbella Methinks you should be more obsessed with spellcheckers. Check the comment I left on your blog.

  • @ytubeanon So you're pedantic AND obsessed with penises.

  • @ytubeanon yeah, im sure she's completely unaware of all the nuances of her own art...

  • Please get the pygmies on the market... I want one in my bedroom!

  • that was fast.

  • Can you buy / be shown how to make a copy of the pygmies anywhere online?

  • Although all pieces were excellent, I must admit that liked the 'space-teddy' the most. It's not funny, nor does it seem particularly complex, but I love the clever contrast and the message it's trying to send. Beautiful!

  • @47571660 "Space-Teddy in flight. Afternoon delight..." ^ ^

  • its like she had somewhere to go

  • very creative! I so want one of those pygmies<3

  • Awsome!

  • BURN THE WITCH!!!

  • I feel like I am on the phone with an offshore banking company.

  • These people are wizards!

  • 3rd TEDtal I see where Denmark is mentioned :D

  • very interesting

  • fascinating art..

  • one of the BEST TED talks LOVED IT!

  • just beautiful

  • Good speech, but.. argh.. i HATE the "clicks" some speakers make with their mouths

  • @sensur1 Its not clicks... she just needs to swallow he saliva before she starts the speech... the so called "clicks" happen because of excess saliva in the mouth.. its really annoying

  • @bornakolbadi extra_very annoying it is!

  • So much modern art seems a waste of time, but these are beautiful and full of play - I don't know how to use them in my class room yet, but I will. Do they all start with the question, "what if?"

  • @dominicsalles nice generalization. im sure you spend your time doing useful and superior activities that go beyond an artist's contribution to society...there's a lot to gain if you like thinking, feeling, discovering, i.e being human. what a waste of time!

  • @pinkflowerpoop Hi Pinky, I imagine you post in order to complain, although your ellipsis means it could be read entirely in support of my "useful and superior" activities. Apologies if you were not intending to patronise me. Since you ask, yesterday my class were taught by a national prizewinning poet I used to teach; I put a 16 year old pupil suffering from ME in contact with an ex pupil, suffering from the same, but now at university...making a difference. I also teach. You?

  • i want the pygmie picture!

  • I like this one. And the one with flying bird-robot

  • why isn't TED just in HD?

  • Agggh, whoever keeps licking their lips, please STOP!!

  • @WingedDrant Classic example of an introvert trying to cope with massive social pressure. Salivation in introverts is documented by D W J Corcoran of the APRU Cambs. Uni. (England) in the paper "The Relation Between Introversion and Salivation".

  • @alanpgoodwin I'd never have thought of that; I found the article and it's a pretty interesting idea. Though to be fair, it might just be due to an increased amplification because she's too soft spoken, picking up all the cracks that are normally too soft to be registered.

    Anyone else have any ideas?

  • very enjoyable

  • man i want that teddy bear in my room.

  • nice...

  • She has a sweet voice.

  • @AmFilms123 easy tiger :)

  • BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lol, She is so beautiful and smart :)

  • OMG this is just AMAZING! :D

  • this is fucking great and funny, great work

  • Utter genius and super cute !!

  • sooo much spit sloshing round in her mouth fucking hell

  • I liked her very much, and liked the ideas she made manifest, they are cute and funny, only did not apriciated much the speed of her talking, at many times I couldnt understand the words she sad, maybe cos of speed she talked maybe the accent she speaks , but If she would talk a bit slowlier would it be better. thumbs up for Her definitevly

  • Both funny and heart warming. Her uncle sounds like a pain.

  • Nice.

  • AHHH that sound she makes when she speaks >:(

  • I really enjoyed this :D

  • This is a nice way of using technology when creating art!

  • that was really cool!

  • Liked and Shared FB-Sun AkaAishaklein. NamasTE.

  • Enjoyed this very much! Thank you.

  • how delightful :)

  • Nice talk. Very clever yet no pretence at all.

  • a beautiful blend of engineering and art!

  • nice but why s she in such a hurry lol

  • @cp9lol She has 5 minutes..

  • @cp9lol there are time limits at TED, you know

  • amazing

  • That's art i like!

  • I want the pygmies for my classroom- the students may be quiet just so the pygmies would come out!!

  • @njspanteach soo you would not be able to do your speech and it would become useless, but good try

  • @PlatinumSeriesUpdate I would imagine they would come out during times of homework, study time, and best yet testing. During a test, this could be a good stress breaker or a distraction.

  • @njspanteach I think you'll have problems with random shouts and screams later :P

  • @njspanteach or you could learn to command their respect like a good teacher.

  • @artdeco101010 such a nice thing to do for us ;)
