Your neighbors might thing you are weird, but it works lite a charm. Cats do not like the feeling of tin foil under their paws. So if you want them to stop jumping onto tables, just fasten some tin foil on the surface for a while. :)

You can't just spray the post with catnip and be done with it. You have to TRAIN the cat, and yes they can be trained. And catnip doesn't make a cat horny...

I've had cats all my life, and all my furniture and wood trims are intact. You have to pay attention to your cat. If he doesn't show interest in scratching a carpeted post, try a sisal or cardboard one. If he likes scratching wood furniture, get him a cedar scratch post.

the aluminum foil thing DOES NOT WORK. My cats use to pee in the walk in closet i had. Some one told me to put aluminum foil on the floor because they dont like the feel or the sound. The next day their was another puddle right in the middle of the foil. I have found that cats HATE anything with a citrus smell so i use orange spray where ever I dont want them to go
