While Dr Whitaker gives quite an impassioned and eloquent speech, it's is extremely disconcerting that he presents these words as his own. While he does make a fleeting attempt of citation, it is far too late and far too vague to have created a proper reference for either Mr Powell or Ms Kaplan to be recognized as the true authors. I absolutely agree with Archtopbrownie in calling for action. Dr. Whitaker, now is the time for you to step up and own up, or next time, wear a clown suit.
As a musician, I know little about academia. But in songwriting, using other people's words as if they are your own is unforgivable. Isn't someone in academia responsible for policing such behavior - at least calling people out when they do it? One may agree with John Lennon's "Imagine", but, just because you sing it doesn't mean you can pretend to have written it.
As a musician/songwriter I’m sensitive to copyright infringement and plagiarism. Listening to Dr. Whitaker’s speech and it sounded familiar. Recalling an article by Michael Powell “Road Well Traveled” I found that from 1:20 to 5:31 the words were all Powell’s work - 99 % verbatim – no credit to the author. I agree with what was said but found the Dr.’s theft of intellectual property disgusting. Then he gives a brief nod to Emma Kaplan and fleshes out the rest of his talk with her material. OMG
While the federal government may have original jurisdiction to enforce federal immigration laws, and declare war, the federal government does not have exclusive jurisdiction to enforce federal immigration laws. Under laws enacted by Congress, states have concurrent jurisdiction and are requested and encouraged to assist the enforcement of federal immigration laws. US States are encouraged to engage in war, if invaded.

Don’t believe me? Google Michael Powell “Road Well Traveled” and Emma Kaplan – SB 1070. You and Dr. Whitaker can read this together.
