  • SG

  • les paul

  • sg has a more crunchy sound, for that song les paul was perfect ( in my opinion )

  • the sg has a nice bark and sounds a little more midrangey imo.

  • Really hard to tell with this shitty microphone

  • the sg has a deeper fuller growl.

  • les pua sounds better but it weighs alot

  • Brilliant comparison! Sold the Les Paul to me, for the sound I want. Thanks!

  • les paul tem o som mais calminho do que a SG prefiro Les Paul

  • SG is good in model Les Paul is good in the sound its sound is more expand

  • Forget SG's and LP's. I'm a Telecaster and Strat man all the way! I'll now duck and get ready for the lettuce and tomatoes to fly at me! LOL

  • @katieandscott This is compare of Gibson guitars, not Fender ;)

  • I have had both and I have to say that there was very little difference. The Les Paul does seem to have a little more sustain and a certain reverb to it you couldn't get from a SG naturally. However, the Les Paul has a really weird hum when each not is played. I don't like it but it is a signature hum that can only come from a les paul.

  • the amp setting/ recording equipment doesn't do either of the guitars justice. nice playing though.

I'll take an SG over a LP any day, unless it's an AMAZING Les Paul.

  • sg better for the solo lp better for the riff :L

  • I also own a a lp and sg got to say love them both i love the look n sound of the les paul there just the best thing on this planet imo but i do like the tougher look of the sg =P

  • There is too much gain or distortion to tell the difference. Nice playing though.

  • they both gibbys?

  • I will take one of each my good man!!

  • SG

  • i prefers les paul's sound

  • i like the crunch of the SG

  • LP has heavier sound but the difference isn't that big to argue about what's better. I prefer SG, because it's lighter in weight and it has more punchy sound than LP. I'm not a guitar-nazi and I think that differences in sound can be equalized, so all that fights are just stupid.

  • @KaNe1943 thts not at all correct. just because they made those "improvements" doesnt make an sg better. in all technicality, a les paul is a vastly higher quality instrument, and we know this cuz they can charge waaaaayyy more for a les paul then a sg. the thinner body makes it lose most of the beefy tone and sustain. and the pickups on an sg are not by any means better. the ONLY thing an sg has on a les paul is the weight. ur just biased towards sg's.

  • @gothomus0 kind of contradicting yourself by saying im biased towards sg's when youve been there saying how the les paul is so much better? and im not biased at all, because i love both guitars, i just took the technicality of the term on why the sg is better technical wise. but why argue? everyone has their own preference on what they prefer and if you have to choose, choose both!

  • Sg is the best

  • It's funny how many people say SG wins by looks and LP by sound.

I Pretty much HATE the look of the SG but I got it beacause of it's tone.

  • SG is technically better... and let me explain why... Because the SG started off as a guitar that was based on the LP but improving its flaws such as shape (for better high fret access), weight, wider neck, thinner body, lowering the price and also upgrading the hardware such as better pick ups etc. so it's clear that the SG is better in technicality, but the les paul is considered a classic, novelty and is loved by many people. on technical terms the sg is better, but both guitars are amazing.

  • You're forgetting that just because it was supposed to be an improvement doesn't mean that it actually was an improvement. A Les Paul typically has a thicker sound than an SG does, which is why a Les Paul is more popular than an SG

  • @ruffles272 i disagree, it all depends what amp and setup you use to get the sounds you want. when it comes to it, it's your own opinion on which one you prefer.

  • Yeah but in this video he used the same amp same cable and same settings and the les paul sounded thicker...

  • @ruffles272 and they sound practically the same? right? the LP may have a "thicker tone" but in reality, they are just the same?

  • Jesus christ . Neither guitar is better they're just different so stop fucking arguing. The video is comparing the sound of a Les Paul and the sound of an SG. There is obviously a difference in sound, and there would be an even greater one in real life.

  • @ruffles272 i just fucking said that... and if you want to stop arguing, then stop messaging back! jeeeez!

  • LES PAUL

  • wait.. playing a les paul with a high treble tone isn't going to sound the same as an SG, of course. put it on bass then we'll see what happends.

  • @1998GAYLORD not true, i replied to his comment with this as a joke on that video, i did not mean to get you angry, im sorry.

  • les paul ftw

  • WOW, the Les Paul has WAY more output than the SG. But keep in mind Pickups play a big part. The Les Paul's BurstBucker Pro's will have more output and better articulation that the 490 498's in the SG, but the 490&498's will have a smoother, bluesy tone. Its all Prefference. Find what YOU like!!

  • in my opinion they are both great guitars but if i had to choose i would choose the SG. Its a lot lighter than the LP and has almost the same tone as a LP. They are also a little cheaper.

  • In looks the SG wins..as to the sound the Les Paul's seems to be better

  • And a Fender Stripe!

    lol

  • les paul

  • please watch mine it compares the les paul and sg only, and has facts on each

    /watch?v=0RWSX-ljSg4

  • WTF all who says SG are some kind of AC/DC fanboys? Not the best performance tho.

  • Personally I believe the Gibson ES 335 and the Gibson Explorer blows them both out of the water. But I perfer the SG over the Les Paul.

  • Both are great, but in this case the Les Paul wins. He's playing f***ing Aerosmith ! Classic rock is definitely a style the SG is not the best for. The SG is more modern, made for punk, maybe Nu Metal. It's not got a bad sound thought. But I prefer the Les Paul, that's got a hotter and heavier sound.

  • @juanm1997 I wish you had been around in the '60's & '70's. Imagine how much better classic rock would sound if you had been there to tell Robby Krieger, Tony Iommi, Carlos Santana, Mick Taylor, Dickie Betts,Pete Towndshend, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix & Angus Young that they had chosen the wrong guitar. When I hear White Room, Sunshine of Your Love, Fillmore East & Back in Black I think "Damn that SG sounds like shit. Don't they know Gibson made the SG in '61 for Punk & Nu Metal?"

  • !!!Me love LES PAUL!!!

  • i have both and i definatly prefer my les paul due to the great sustain

  • OK I admit, I 'm a huge AC/DC fan, but the Les Paul just sounds better!!!

  • Les Paul sounds better, but it's so heavy. And it's hard to reach the upper frets. So I prefer the SG

  • They are both great guitars, les paul is better for classic rock, sg more for heavier rock, you can even tell when he switches. ^__^

  • why is everybody so picky?! it doesn't matter what guitar you like it all depends on your opinion. What ever you feel is great than that's fine. what you think that just sounds better than that's your decision. Don't care what other people think it is your life and your choice. At first I used to like the sg better than the Les Paul. Now I like them both. But my decision doesn't matter its your choice.

  • Les Paul sound better.

  • SG - Brasil :p kk... enjoei da clássica SG... a cor... bordÔ com preto... muda um pokooo >:<

  • Les paul

  • sg

  • Thats a nice amp, I have a peavey classic 50.

  • Fucking Evil Violin! : ] Love it!

  • SG! I have both more comfort and fuckin evil lookin!

  • The SG has more depth than the Les Paul... less weight and better definition and the 57 bridge is even all that hot. throw in a SD JB chrome covered p/u, a TP-6 bridge and some grover locking tuners and graphite nut and you got a killer sound machine armed axe. dont get me wrong i love the Pauls tone and i owned a classic in honeyburst. great guitar.

  • I have a LP (non-Gibson) and a dean Cadillac, (Basically an LP except slightly different shape) and I prefer the Dean to the LP, the LP is heavier, has a Fatter Neck and I hit the toggle switch all of the time by accident, I like the pick-ups in the dean a lot better and the look.

  • LP = pitbull

    SG = chiuahua

    nuf said

  • @reditch i disagree, i think the SG sounds more aggressive - but things like that are open to interpretation. my gibson SG certainly sounds more aggressive than my gibson les paul which has a sweet, tame jazzy sort of vibe going on. my SG roars like a lion, whereas my les paul purrs like a cat.

  • @Blompcube I have a 87 SG Elite with the Spotlite PAF's as well and yes the SG can scream like no other but my Les Pauls is like a fucking cannon when hooked to my VOX. also remeber to have more of a broader sound tone u need more wood! SG = 8lbs Les Paul =13lbs !

  • @reditch yeah, i think it basically depends on which SG and which les paul you're talking about. my SG has a much broader sound than my les paul. but that's just comparing my les paul and my SG and to an extent certain inherent characteristics associated with those particular models - any other les paul or SG would be different, because they are all unique.

  • @Blompcube well go in to early 60s every 1 sounded miles apart compare a 59 les paul and a 61 sg les paul and your just miles apart

  • @fallnreverse16 that's pretty much exactly what i was getting at.

  • @reditch LOL

  • sg

  • That's easily the best colour and finish for a Les Paul. As is that SG lol

  • I love Les Pauls and SG's..I own a Gibson SG Special Faded...AMAZING!!! Although, I think Les Paul is better for me..I'd want to keep one of each though for sure!

  • LP!!! FUCK YES!

  • @velebr3 That's just sexist, Les Pauls can be played by anyone, geez!

  • @Timothyga01 look up svk guitars, been around for like a year you can get a les paul custom copy for 300-400 that sounds like the 800 dollar epiphones

  • I Love both of them, but I gotta go for the Les Paul. I honestly like a heavier guitar, plus in my opinion the LP just sounds better.

PS. why do you have a fender strap on your Les Paul? I mean really...

  • @Squirrelriffs a strap is a strap, does it matter what the brand is?

  • I loveee SGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!

  • sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sgsg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sgsg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg sg Anyone Agree??

  • You can really hear the difference between the two guitars, the maple cap and pickup's on the Les Paul are so much brighter. While the SG is darker and warmer sounding. I owm 4 Gibson Les Pauls standard and custom mix of them. they all sound amazing. I have 2 Sg's one is a vintage 1962. While the other is a new standard. Thaey both sound different. It is nice to have the different guitars for differeing sounds.

  • @orcustrex rich

  • I was thinkin about getting a ephiphone les paul 100 with either a line 6 spyder or a marshall amp. My budget is 500$ so i guess I have some room cause at first I was going to get a strat but then I saw the ovation and was like OMG I need that then, I see the ephiphone les paul and was like DAMN I need that. so any suggestions on a good guitar set up for less that $500? maybe even the ephiphone sg(ive been playing acoustic for about 2 1/2 years.

  • @timothyga01 I bought a second hand sg 400 a few years back when i started playing, they are not great guitars to begin with but a little bit of work on the action and a new neck pickup personally i went for a SD 57 classic humbucker and damn i regret selling it now, was one of the best little guitars i had ever owned i even preffered it to a gibson sg special that i bought recently, as to the idea of getting anything made by line 6.......JUST DONT DO IT!! ever

  • Les Paul's are alright but are overpriced and overated, SG's are the kind for me lol..

  • les paul is too expensive for me. SG FTW

  • SG!!! and im a sabbath man. so duh. SG!

  • Both amazing guitars, but I'm on the Les Paul side ;)

  • Those guitars have different gear on them also the body style produces different tone from one another naturally but they both sound hot. Good post thank you :) I play Les Paul quite often , played many SG always prefer the upper fret access and extra wiggling space on my lap lol Also SG reminds me of L6 from the 70's damn they can scream!

  • Les Pauls for all the way!!!

  • I would say on this clip that the lp has more bass grunt. I alway think the lp looks sexy but on the downside, they can be well heavy (in the pounds or kg sense of the word)

  • I am more of a Ac/dc type so the SG is the one, the les Paul for guns n roses

  • @Dj1nky I like both but I play lots of Guns N' Roses so Les Pauls are for me!!!

  • @Dj1nky that is a stereotype a serious player should stay away from, I modestly believe.

I own some of each, Gibsons, japanese, american copies, and I can tell that both these guitars can get tones that are really broad. We identify the LP with Page, Slash, ZZTop, etc, etc, while the SG with the early Mick Taylor, with Agus Young, etc, etc etc.

    So what?

have you ever heard what Clapton did with different guitars on the same songs? and so many others?

    Just play and listen.....

  • SG

  • @hefo133 No way dude, SG is so fuckin ugly.

  • SG sounds more chunky and because of the all mohogony body and neck. The Les Paul has a maple top that brightens up the sound.

  • SG

  • thumbs up for different clothes!

  • I prefer sg's overall but for aerosmith you have to go with the les paul

  • ESP ALL THE WAY!

  • I Love Les Pauls

    !

  • sg sounds thin and shitty, lp sounds thick and brutal...easy call.

  • sg is perfect to solos,i love sg

  • LOOK... LES PAUL IS A SOLO GUITAR AND SG IS MORE FOR BURNING... ANYWAY, IT CAN PRODUCE A VERY NICE SOLO SOUND... I HAVE ONE AND I THINK IT'S THE MOST AMAYING GUITAR EVER

  • I think SG wins

  • What album was this on

  • thanks, u're video is very usefull

  • i personally dont like sg'd because when i play one seems like the neck is father away and the body is to close if you know what i mean

  • do they sound like that coz of your amp or do they just sound like that? also which one would be better for metal (nickelback or avenged sevenfold)

  • is that faded mahogany or maple top? i have both a cherry faded SG and a 50s tribute sunburst les paul studio. love both of them. their both great for their kinds of music of music their suitable for

  • i like the sg look ....but gotta say les paul has got a much coherent sound while sg is much of a blur

  • an sg is just a lightened lespaul

  • Both gtrs are amazing but I like SG more than Les Paul coz SG sounds like "sharper" and les paul doesn't have that rock n' roll sound

  • @TheJuustonaksumies I personally also prefer SG's to LP's... it seems that SG has more bite, more "nervous" sound (lack of proper words), while LP's have the deeper growl.

It is a matter of preference.

  • Thanks Pranks - I know what you are saying. I think I have played in too many situations with bass and drum drowning out the guitar. Have the extra high end, "maple top" sound helps. Also I think you can always make the sound darker by picking technique but hard to get more treble when it's not there to begin with. Whadda ya think?

  • Les Pauls ftw.

  • Sg or Les Paul... Each individual Les Paul and each individual SG is made from different parts of different trees. The cool thing about the guitar is they are all so different. But the coolest thing is the human that playing each guitar is even more unique than the guitars. Holding the guitar a different way trying to express different feelings. I think I personally could probably get a better sound out of that particular Les Paul than the SG. Sg seems to heavy mid range.

  • the sg sounds better to me

  • Awwhh Yaa,, SG all the way!, the les paul has a better look to it but you can really see the difference in the sound of them

  • @PranksVillage hahaha you can't but i do sg in this comparison sounds a little ''muddy'' ''darker'' because it doesnt have a maple top , try it, play leads on a LP and they will jump try leads on a sg they will sound good very tasty but no jumping if that makes sense

  • Les Paul

  • SG

  • SG is best

  • SG FtW. By the way, u can play

  • theyre both epiphones anyway

  • @TommyW222 what the hell are you talking about, you can see the gibson logo on the headstock at 0:13

  • Comment removed

  • @Themunz400 yeah sorry my bad

  • @TommyW222 lol i just noticed your right, the pick guard on the sg gave that away :p

  • @iPodChallenger yeah thats what i thought:)

  • @TommyW222 Well, I'm sorry, but with all of this back-and-forth in the comments about whether it's Gibson or Epiphone, people seem to have ignored the description which clearly states that the SG is a Gibson and so is the Les Paul. Also, not quite sure what iPodChallenger meant about the pickguard.

  • @Vanguard448 erm... well the pickguards on an epiphones sg is different to the gibsons

  • @TommyW222 How so? If you mean the shape, it's a pickguard shape common on SGs from both brands; the 'small' pickguard originated on 1960's models and has been used on reissues ever since.

  • Comment removed

  • @TommyW222 Well, I actually saw your comment before it was removed and all I can say is this; go on Gibson's website and follow these simple steps.

    1. Go to 'Electric Guitars'

    2. Go to 'SG's.

    3. Click 'Gibson USA on the left of the screen.

    4. Find the '61 Reissue.

    5. Realize the flaw in your argument.

  • just bought a wood effect SG today. It is an amazing guitar, i was torn between an SG and a les paul, i chose the SG simply because i liked its sound more and in my opinion, a les paul is known by everyone, the SG is the underdog of the two.

  • SGs are awesome i'm getting one soon

  • SG

  • inpressive skills......try playing stair way to heaven backwards...geting a les paul tomorrow so cant wait.

  • I got both...standards and problem resolved...

  • I'm sure Joe and Richie Supa both played Les Pauls on this one

  • Both great guitars the LP has more balls, but the SG has such a sweet sound and is so easy to play. I have them both and woldnt want to choose

  • YOU MAKE PLAYING THIS LOOK SO FRICKEN EASY, I WISH I HAD YOUR SKILLS

  • les paul sounds a lot better. the sg has a lesser tone.

  • @safetosaydontquoteme i agree that the les paul has a brighter tone while the sg has a deep dark tone, both are awesome

  • ive played on a lot of guitars, but i think sg is a better guitar than les paul

  • les paul FTW!!!

  • The Les Paul sounded better, although I DO Love the SG.. No Surprise there

  • Sg woz better

  • i think the les paul sounds much better

  • I usually play on a Gibson L4, I'm not comfortable playing on an LP, Or even a strat, I prefer the SG, It's not as heavy and easy to handle. Even though I like LP's and Strats.

  • Well you'd be disappointed if otherwise I'm sure. That doesn't answer why you accuse me of lying though. Anyway an opinion is an opinion but just making rash unfulfilled statements is unfair.

  • the les paul sucks. Nice SG you probably cant get that one any more.

  • sg is better

  • Whoa. My Epiphone SG400 has a bound neck. OK I bought it in 1991 when they where the bees knees. Nowadays they are made to be more cost effective, also I put Iron gear pick ups in it and it was compared to a new Gibson SG and Guess what? It sounds better too.

  • @fredders56 LIES

  • @BL80488 Hmm? Well it's easy to make a comment like that. I bought the Guitar in 1991 still have the original sales receipt. A music shop repair man installed the new pick ups and he made the comment about new Gibson's not being as good as they should and £ for £ or $ for $ mine is better and I did play with Rob Koral and Zoe Schwarz last week. So which bit is untrue?

  • @fredders56 I own a 1992 Epiphone LP Standard Burst, I put Gibson Electronics in It and It Still cant touch my 2010 Gibson SG Standard

  • THE EXPLORE WINS

  • @jackassqwe1 fuck you your a fucking bizzznach with a giant vagiona go kill yourslef you peeece of shgittt!!!! fusk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I must concer, The Les Paul as the edge, but there's always a part for a 61 SG std, that's set in history along with the Les Paul, but it boils down to what you afford to play,!!!thanks, " very interesting"

  • definitely the Les Paul, both for design as for the sound

  • the les paul seems to be a bit more "bassier" and "heavier" in sound where the sg sounds "thinner" but i guess sgs are lighters and less expensive so they both have their pros and cons

  • SG is soo sexy

  • I love SGs!!!

  • Trying to go from an SG to a Les Paul is like trying to quit smoking. I am trying to get back into les pauls again because of the look and the sound but after 3 songs playing the les paul I go straight to the SG. There so damn comfortable and light.

  • Your fav classic solos were done on a Gibson SG. Period. :)

  • The les paul is cool, but the SG is a mans guitar!

  • Ha funny he has a gibson sg and gibson les paul but fender amp and fender strap.

  • Comment removed

  • @tangypasta both the SG and the LP have set necks. An SG and an LP can have the same pickups and sound different... why? Once has a maple top and more 'mass' and the other is thinner with less mass.

  • Comment removed

  • @tangypasta Gibson have never made a bolt on neck SG. Never. Also, tone wood noes not subtly change tone, it DRAMATICALLY changes tone. I suggest some more experience and some more reading. :)
