connie hawkins is the god father of the style that dr. j and ice took to the next level. connie's finger rolls popped up off of the finger tips and dropped down all net that's how ice shoots them. baylor shot the roll but with more emphasis in power than flair. doc dunks like connie with that one hand raised up high. had we seen connie a bit younger we'd have seen him go coast to coast like doc as well.
There was a uniqueness in Gervin. So smooth.Such a remarkable scorer.I hesitate to criticize such a great, one of a kind basketball player. But I just can`t forget he never won a ring.If you`re truly an all time superstar, you will the players around you to help you reach that height.George couldn`t do that.A top 50 all time player?Yes.But a top ten all time great like Jodan, Earvin or Bird?I say no.
@1994g0 gervin's spurs weren't better than the lakers. ewing's knicks weren't better than the bulls. mailman's jazz ran out of time. timing has alot to do with winning big. a better team emerges and skips the heir to the throne in sports often. as for stars willing their teams to overachieve, styles make fights. if you beat a better team, unless they beat themselves, it probably was a match up that the weaker team exploited ie warriors lakers a few years back. let's not be cliche.
george gervin the ice man!!!! remember wathing him at the old hemisfair arena when i was a kid! wish they had more players with style and grace in the nba today it was always fun watching him!
Yeah, Ice could finger roll from half-court if he wanted to. This guy is a tribute to what Coach Wooden says about 'Dunking' and how he liked it much better when you couldn't dunk -- as you can see the finesse one has to play with is pretty darn cool. I don't know if I agree with Coach Wooden, but I will agree that a guy that could dunk the bejesus out of the ball and chooses instead to ridiculously finger-roll it is pretty demoralizing.
Man Gervin was cool, when id go to hemisfair to see the Spurs, I think like most venues, you could walk on to court level and these guys would shake your hand and sign autographs.Gervin is not only cool on the court but his handshake could send a cold chill up your back. Dude was cool.
Along with Kareem's Sky Hook, Ice's Finger Roll is the smoothest and one of the best Offensive Weapons of All Time. Although players like Drexler, Dr. J, Wilt and Hawkins had Finger Rolls, they wern't as smooth and free flowing as the Iceman's =)
LOL...wow...tmac never lead the league in scoring 3 straight times...tmac never was mvp of the all star game....tmac hasnt even won a playoff series ....aint nothin punk about gervin....oh yea...i forget...just bcuz he has on a Spurs jersey...speaking of Spurs....the Spurs havent been sorry since duncans "gay" azz got drafted....and if he is gay...you should be ashamed of your teams and the rest of the league should be ashamed....letting a gay man win all those rings...haaaa...suckas
wilt, hawkins & erving all had elite level finger rolls... but no one could hang w/ ice... his was on a rarified level... outrageous in its boldness & exquisite in its skill.. had to love the way he put such a high arc on it... more arrogant then a dunk... ontop of it he would use it even 18 feet out... no one will replicate this guy.

Probably was.Great skills-no doubt about it.But Gervin never won a championship. That stops him from being an all time great.

@1994g0. The refs stopped him from being great in Game 7 of the 1979 Eastern Conference Finals. Bad call on Billy Paultz.
