Bartolli is a Mezzo Soprano ill equipped to tackle a demanding role of a Soprano with a good consistent technique( like Sutherland). La Sonnambula is a particularly taxing opera which will show your as either good, very good or terribly bad because of its dufficulty
No one can even try beating Sutherland and Devia in this cabaletta, why aren't they included? Netrebko isn't light enough, Bartoli is WAY too agressive, Robin is quite ok, Dessay was a bit strained on top, but ok. Scotto I actually enjoyed here, but usually I find her boring. Moffo is really lovely, except for her F at the end. Pons is too choppy for me, Fleming is awful, you should have chosen her early nineties live performances of this. Jo is quite good, and is the best for the role here!
Maybe that's why Sutherland is not included here. What's the point of competing if you know everyone else is gonna be K.O from the beginning ? ;-) (and OMG, I just dont understand why Netrebko keeps singing coloratura like there are not enough lyrics roles for her; and as much as I love Fleming, I have to agree with you that she sounds pretty atrociously here)
Quite lousy sound qualitiy, but interesting survey. To me, La Bartoli's voice is always the most wonderful to listen to, as well as her modest interpretation. Sumi Jo is the only one of these women who touches me as much as Cecilia.
Not the most traditional choices. Netrebko is out of her element here. I say that as someone that does respect some of her work. Bartoli, no comment. Robin is Robin (and not even her best). Dessay, I would have used her wonderful and totally embellished 1998 version, that rocked. Scotto was great, young enough to still have the flexibility in her voice. Moffo was moffo, enough said, as was Pons. Fleming was a joke! Jo was solid without much more.
I totally agree on all counts. I would have included Sutherland, Devia, Gruberova, and a few old-timers such as Tetrazzini, Galli-Curci, Ivogun, and Kurz. I suppose of this group Scotto was the best, and Moffo was not bad either.
Maria Callas is the best singer of 'Ah! non giunge' and all of lyrics musics i know.

Mado Robin's high notes add always something special, supernatural, missing in other renditions.

Netrebko doesn't sound all too bad here...
What the hell is Bartoli singing this aria for?
My favourite is Anna Moffo!!
