Never do it for more than 10 seconds or the plastic starts to burn. The majority of the sparks happen in the first few seconds.

ive done it before theres no problem with it. the gas that it makes though could be poisonous. and well as anything that you leave in a microwave for a really long time yes it eventually will catch on fire.
