@pmoyer50 from what i read Murrys own father used to beat him to a pulp.So you cant really knock him.He was wrong to abuse his own boys but i think he wanted the best for them and also wantd to be noticed himself.Peace,Desiree.
It's the responsibility of the person to break the chain when it comes to abuse. He failed as a human being with a conscience. You can't justify his behavior because of how his father abused him.
Interesting recording studio out takes of the man. Shame about the "Do it again/Cottonfields" background loop - that got so annoying I stopped halfway through. Yes, Murry was unbearable but the instrumental version of The Warmth of The Sun from his "Many Moods" album is wonderful and worth checking out.
I feel sorry & uber-pity for poor old Murry. The guy was the epitomy of jealousy & low self-esteem thru a self-inflicted sense of severe under-achievement. A very frustrated, bitter man, who took out his frustrations on his children - which is the very-worst thing that any malfunctioning, maladjusted parent can possibly do.
this is probably one of the worst clips on YouTube....what the fuck is that shitty music playing the whole time? are you insane? it has nothing to do with anything.
Yea good thing Murray sent in that record company or who knows if there wouldve been a beach boys but he did treat the guys pretty bad though out of jelousy.
Well, in the end, he amounted to nothing. His wife Audrey (Brian, Carl and Dennis's mother) left him when he cheated on her. He is buried in an unmarked grave.
murry really fucked these poor guys life's up! i do not wonder why dennis was scewed up and took his life! and brian seeing a shrink for all those years! poor guys!
It's so difficult. On one hand, Murry looked out for his boys, big-time, early on in their start-out career phase. But he progressively became a full-on pain in the a-se, and he clearly screwed Brian's psyche right up. And then the bast--d went & sold Sea of Tunes in a blatant rip-off of his first & most talented son Brian. So what does one make of Murry ? A frustrated, jealous guy, I think - that's what was at the heart of his mental-case baggage & all the ultimate damage he did to poor Brian.
I know Murray was considered an intrusive dick by most, but he really did care, albeit in his own pain in the ass way. I kind of feel bad for the old palooka. At least he didn't throw his glass eye at Al Jardine. "Rhonda...Rhonda...c'mon, Al..." I thought the guy who played Murray in that BB made-for-TV bioflick did a decent job. Certainly better than the actors who played the guys in the group.
"When you guys get so big that you can't sing from your hearts, you'll go downhill." He may have been a jerk, but he was right about that. The boys really did go downhill after the Holland album.
I didn't find it offensive at all. He was just talking straight to them. He was being droll when he said he was a genius too. He was referring to Brians' beginning obsession with his own genius- something that was drug induced and would eventually obliterate his life and abilities. I thought his father sounded very bright.
Murry's method of dealing with Brian's creativity - beating the crap out of him and making him permanently deaf ("I got one good ear left", indeed) seems to me about as bright as a coal cellar at the bottom of the Marianas Trench.
Who in the hell could hit their child with anything?? That bastard. Classic case of anger displacement. He must have been angry with himself. Love is not jealousy. Embrace your children. Brian flourished in spite of and maybe because of parental abuse. Brian you're not alone.
Brian at 1:24: "I've got one ear left and your big, loud voice is killing it." Murray abused his children, including bashing Brian on the ear with a 2-by-4 because the lawn wasn't mowed on time, and now the jealous old bastard is drunk and trying to control this recording session. "I'm a genius, too." Guess again, daddy.
Yeah Murry's drinking had really increased at that point as well. I read that what was caught on tape was Murry coming into the studio drunk and just berating them. After Brian told Murry his thoughts he basically stormed out of the studio and that was that. Murry was actually a manipulative, abusive asshole who was jealous of his son's gift.
this guy was bad news!

He beat Brian with a 2 by 4 on his back and made him shit on a newspaper in front of his mother.

I'm sure Murray's father was equally dysfunctional. The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree.

The scary fact is that Murry was not an atypical 60's father, not by a long shot.

Murray Wilson a genius? Humph. What kind of "genius" beats his kids and cheats on his wife and sells their entire music catalog?
