Im sitting on the naafi bar wall in gib looking up this wraf s shorts as here legs were up on the wall, oh happy days 2 and half yrs of sport birds booze with a little bit of bullshit
its 89 Im in St Marteen, on a 2 day pan am vaca, this is cranken on the tape deck, and I'm about to crash into a stone wall, because that was as good as it would ever get.
Early 80s, best days of my life! So many great bands around, so many different sounds and styles. I had a 30 inch waist, all my hair, loads of mates and birds and the future lay before us everything was possible (or so we thought)
Then it all went to s h i t, and I now have to fight within myself to drag my middle aged body out of bed and off to a job I hate, to pay for stuff I don't really want or need in a world getting crazier by the day. I weep for those times, places and people lost now..
All of their songs are timeless. I still have them on cassette and I really need to get up to date and get their whole catalog on cd especially after hearing this song. Man! the memories come right back to me whenever I hear their songs.
This song brings back SO MANY MEMORIES! How can people be so talented to write such an amazing song? It just makes me feel so free and ecstatic. It will never date. So glad I've been alive to listen to this song since it was released.
This was my Soundtrack to my dive into chains and my uprise to Freedom during exactly those years! What a Powerful Echo of those formidable years. Truly the soundtrack for a fabulous film !
God kicked us a bone with this song. Epic , eternal song.....a song that makes you think about the past and future and how struggle life can be. And the hope for a better life.
Summer time in the park I used to be good looking lots of girls and booze, in the park with this album. Please god before I die transport me back Its fucking shite nowadays carefree and Mortgage free then and no fucking (Radical) Muslims and Asylum seekers, white trash, and fucking layabouts and Chavs!!!
The world is fucked now wish I could go back 81.82,83,84!! Cheers!!!!!!!
@davenight Great comment, Dave. I'm sure many balding guys with paunches, nagging wives, grizzling kids and mortgages completely understand your plea!
Couldn't agree more mate, I can't believe how much better my life was back then even though I was "poorer"... would go back in a heartbeat if offered the channce
Awesome shot at 4:08 of Mel Gaynor smiling, something he usually doesn't do in pictures and videos. The first time I saw Mr Gaynor playing live he was playing New Gold Dream. The song brings tears to my eyes.
i was not actually emptying bins, i was speaking metaphorically.......making a point about the dominant ideology......from your user name though u are most likely female ergo missing my oblique reference supplanting with something subjectively emotive as you do..
Just watched a Dvd "the Informers" Wow this Simple Minds song was the starters. My heart longed for those days again. I watched those gorgeous boys in their suits and black glasses. My heart skipped a thousand beats. After the movie I jumped onto my laptop and played all Simple Minds songs. Those were the best days, but how I would do things so differently. Dus is life!!
@TheDebraknight I miss the style of the 80's so much. It was so cool, very pretty & classy. When I saw the movie The Informers I thought the samething. As in any movies of the 80's I feel the same. =)~
81,82,83,84...16,17,18,19 old i was and yeahh i dressed myself in a new wave..this album i remember driving my first car 83 and listening to this...big hugh to all who was with me ...no iam 44...but still reflect myself and get the same feelings....
Hadn't heard this song in maybe 18 years and it popped in my mind the other day and I HAD to hear it. Wow! Totally stands the test of time! I was in college when this song came out, the 80's were fab, NYC, lower east side, King Tut's Wawa Hut across from Tomkins Square Park. OMG the memories, the clubs, THE MUSIC was amazing. 92.7 WDRE/WLIR played all this music, wish we still had that radio station.
Ministry of Sound have just released an album with 60, 80's tracks on it, this and 'promise you a miracle' are two tracks which are on it. I recommend the album, has al the 80's classics on it.
@a1m7e7r6ica Oh God Yes, i wish it was. this album is getting some high rise volume on my record deck tomorrow, The eighties were a great time to be alive and young!!

the second proper album I ever bought as a 15 year old in 1982. haunting stuff, it will never be equalled, timeless classic, still sounds as good today as it did all them years ago. Pure masterclass. What the poor youngsters today have to put up with today !
from scotland too!!!!! scotland has so much to be proud of!!!!! this is unreal!!!!! there are parts of this track that are just too good for words!!! Simple as! Pardon the pun..heho
Gawd, its soo good, But how has time went on, it goes Fast soo enjoy class when it comes your way, Memories are cheap, but living the Memories is REAL, Mr Kerr I soo have tried to dance like you at soo Many New Year Parties, I reckon after 10 beers I am you. Should get rid of Strictly Come Dancing and let people on who can pogo / skip (aka Skids) dance the night away
So I can hope For J.Kirr. I only wished we heard more about him now but it's quit still arround him and his band in comparisson to for example Queen, Bowie...I wish him success because he deserves it. His band played a major role in my youth, his music was as written for me but then again, "les gouts et les couleurs se ne discutte pas". anyway, their music helped me a lot to feel comfort, arranged, out of the blue, there was only one problem, my partner couldn't comprehend it so it became...
LS83, you're quite right, it was 84. I'd parked my car in an NCP, and couldn't remember what level - they were closing at about midnight and I was working in Colwyn Bay that year, had to be in work for 8am the next day. What a night!
Saw these live in Liverpool 82 (or was it 83?) they were supreme, even though the PA gear packed up half way through. If this song doesn't rock you, surely nothing ever will!
No greater orgasm could be reached than by listening to Simple Minds and more great legends from the early 80's!! Absolute Ear Sex.... Jeez, Bring it back... for Someone's sakes!!!
Another one of those songs from my youth that sends chills down my spine every time I hear it. I'm immediately taken back when I hear Mr. Kerr proclaim "81, 82, 83, 84"!!! The constant low-fi bass line totally melts me. This is right up there with Heaven 17's "Let Me Go" and Gang of Four's "Is It Love"!!!
Chills, and tears for me....I play Gang of Four's "Is it Love" constantly...trying to recapture the moments. The memories are trememdous...ah to be young again !!!
Every time I listen to this I wish there was a cheesy-awesome 80s sci-fi/fantasy adventure film made with this on the soundtrack. Roger Dean's album covers come to mind; also, a little Frazetta. Thing is, the association is always there: alien princesses, shining spacecraft, strange landscapes, synthesizers... and I have no idea where I got it from - I heard this song for the first time like a year ago!
Una delle mie canzoni preferite.. Poche musiche mi hanno coinvolto così tanto. Possiede un'energia eccezionale. Per usare le parole dello stesso Jim Kerr: "una vetta creativa"

I still can't comprehend why they didn't make it. They were the best I ever heard when I was 18. Miss them

Scotland produces poets.....thank Christ....from Harry Lauder to Jim Kerr to Billy MacKenzie....beautiful poets who
understand strife and suffering. This music makes me
want to dance with everyone on earth.

If this song doesn't rock you, surely nothing ever will!

maybe it was 84? LOL

I agree with you! this song is so perfect and amazing. It does give me chills everytime I hear this song, I never get tired of listening to it.

Trailgoat,
I couldn't have said it better myself.

This song in my mind totally described both the exciting creative promise and both the totally empty and disappointing materialism of the eighties.
