  • Excellent vid mate.

Are there any other ways to treat this smelly issue, rather than emptying the glands? Have a new rescue who is super nervous and it smells, daily... Hes not very comfortable with human touch just yet, so thats why I ask.

    Cheers!

  • Great video. Good to see a vet with a sense of humor making a disgusting situation kind of fun! :)

  • @jaflans Love to educate and entertain a bit. Thanks!

  • so how often when I have to express my dogs anal glands

  • @cokiemeli Most dogs never need it done. Some dogs with food allergies or "bad plumbing" need it done monthly

  • is it really safe to do it at home? I mean, if you're not a veterinarian

  • @kostariddle Many people do it from the outside and gently from the inside.Groomers often learn to do this to help out

  • I saw someone finger a dog's butt today. I am going to go outside now.

  • Finally, a video that can be used for dog care education instead of leaving you confused and just as lost before viewing. THANK YOU!

  • @bigboreguy Glad it helps! I'm amazed at the number of dogs with the problem.

  • This guy is seriously amazing! LOL! Omg :D

  • @eksophia Just my job, glad you enjoyed? the video

  • Thanks so much to the doctor for teaching us how to do this for our pets. Gratefully,

  • @KJV1611ASV1901 Glad to help and educate !

  • The things I learn on Youtube

  • I heard if the anal gland is expressed often by squeezing the muscle it would damage the muscle around the gland. Is such claim can be true, Dr?

  • @guner7 Only if too much pressure and force is used. Gentile pushing on the glands to release the fluid helps prevent infection. However, some anal gland problems are due to food allergies. Lots of dogs are allergic to wheat in food wheat chews or chemicals in dry food. Check out my book Dog Dish Diet on amazon

  • Just got back from the vet with my little rescued JRT mix; she had to have this done. Vet was wonderful and showed me how to do it; he expressed one gland and supervised me while I did the other to ensure I knew how, so now I can do it at home. Came on YouTube just to get some reinforcement from the teaching, and found this video! Thanks for posting it; it was very informative! And your sense of humor cracks me up. "Fountain, fountain!"

  • @SamIAm0529 It looked like a nice little fountain in the viewer! Glad it helped!

  • I'm scared to try this because my dog might take a dump when doing this..

  • I think Peaches has a thing for you. Thanks for the tip Dr. Greg!

  • so how can I drain my chihuahuas A-glands?

  • @leogendary push on them from the outside like in the video

  • @DrGregDVM do people have anal glands that work in the same way but our scent has diminished?

    do monkeys or apes?

  • @Imhighandhungry People have distinctive body odor/pheromones instead of scent glands. These sacs are found in all carnivora except bears,[1] sea otters[2] and kinkajous.[3] Monkeys and apes don't have them either

  • @DrGregDVM thanks knowledge is power!

  • i have a golden retriever. when his glands get infected and pop. the color is yellow. is that normal??

  • @936Asmith Runny yellowish with black specks can be normal.

  • @936Asmith i dont think my dogs glands empty normal. almost every week you will smell the odor of that stuff and i have to pop his glands. any thing i can really do?

  • Oh Man, You Work are the Best ?

  • How did I get here?

I'm not doing this......Spot's going to the vet.

  • @joestl314 I'm so with you! I have no idea how I ended up watching this video!

  • Thumbnail of a dogs ass

  • Hey Dr. Greg can you change the thumbnail of this video. Because i subscribed you and every time in youtube main page i see a dog ass :)

  • @tynasorusrex That is not a very good welcome. Are you sure its not my head? I'll change it!

  • @DrGregDVM Yea im sure. Its looks like 1:40 sec of this video. The dogs operations is not problem for me because im a vet. student. But maybe its a problem for other pet ovners or my friends :) And you make really good things. I wish be like you. Thanks.

  • O.o use gloves man !

  • @666DemoneNero I sometimes forget when filming. Have to correct that. Thanks for watching!

  • this was great. you're awesome. seriously :)

  • @novamarie5 Thanks for watching, I enjoy helping people understand!

  • thanks you so much for such a very instructional video. I am very happy you posted something so necessary for my puppy. I dont care if it is stinky as long as my great friend is healthy and content. Thanks a looooooot.

  • @Msbumbles04 You're welcome. Thanks for watching

  • ow ow ow

  • Wow, you're not only very funny & entertaining...you make this easy to learn & not seem so hard....thank you very much for taking the time out for our pets, making us better parents!

  • @venuslock35 That's why I do it...to help dog lovers like you take care of your pets problems! Thanks

  • My dog often gets infections in her anal glands. Currently, she's on her third set of antibiotics in the past 12 months. Do you recommend we do something else? It feels like the antibiotics don't help. She keeps scooting no matter what.

    -Thanks

  • @lopez5026 Anal gland problems can be due to food allergies too. Quit all biscuits, treats and chews with wheat. Feed like I do (The Dog Dish Diet dogdishdietdotcom). Add tbspoon of pumpkin daily

  • @DrGregDVM Thanks! We'll try it out.

  • hey doctor greg i try pressing from the outside to my chihuahuas and nothing came out would it hurt my chih if i put my finger inside to try to get the ana gland .... and why is it that in peaches noting came out and ones u did it inside i came out alot ?

  • @qXxDeadRose13xXp They empty naturally. If your chi still scoots and is empty, it may be a food allergy

  • tried it with my dog.....IT SMELLS LIKE ROTTEN FISH

  • @idklolnow Anal gland odor is one of the worst next to cat poop, pig poop, and skunk

  • @DrGregDVM lol >_<

I noticed that my dog throws up every time the anal gland builds up too much

  • @idklolnow Could be a food allergy to biscuits or food with wheat glutens. Anal gland problems can occur from allergies to ingredients in some commercial foods

  • @DrGregDVM shit thats fucked up!!

  • "Fountain! FOUNTAIN!!"

    You are awesome, doctor.

  • @CasqueDuMacabre It was a pretty fountain. Thanks for watching!

  • nasty

  • LIK SUMTHIN BIT EMM!!

  • @newnewbebe1 What??

  • @f1fan84 In the video when he was talking about how he knew his dog needed his anal glands checked

  • EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

  • it always makes me smile when i saw those animals become better :)

  • @Jevon1003 Me too!

  • @Jevon1003 Me too!

  • I have always wonderd where the two openings were, now i know! A great video, with a great vet. I would love having a vet just like him. seem happy and in love with his job. just one question: I have never emptied my dogs glands and she is a two year old great dane. She has never shown me any symptoms of anal glands problem. should I try to empty them or should I just leave them. Because I have always heard that you should not empty them if the dog do it on their own. // hugs from sweden!!

  • @Johannakarlsson90 I have never needed to express my dogs glands. If they never show signs, it doesn't need to be done. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" Pushing on them would just irritate everyone. Thanks for watching!

  • the dog enjoyed it :)

  • @VelveetaCheeze It didn't enjoy it, but needed it!

  • that dog has a clean butt hole

  • @tylergillisiscool Thanks for the almost clean comment

  • very clear video! great! thankyou:-) now wish me luck with my (for now) stinky dalmatian...

  • @knuffeldraakje Good luck. Hope the vid helps

  • @DrGregDVM Thank you so much for your info, I noticed my dog jumping up out of nowhere all the time while he was laying down in my room. I thought it was his hearing was going and something may have startled him. He has had his anal glands extracted once before at the vet using the insertion technique but no sooner than a week later he's been doing it again. Should I just keep taking him to the vet to get them "milked" as they say? Thank you for your time.

  • @XxJackshowxX They may need to be emptied but it sounds like he may have food allergies. Beware of wheat glutens in treats and foods. They may be causing his bowel and anal gland issues. They shouldn't be inflamed in such a short time.Check my nutritional info at dogdishdietdotcom or google dog dish diet.

  • @DrGregDVM Thank you very much for the extra info, I'll be on the look out for any wheat glutens in future dog food or treat purchases, thank you again for your time, take care :)

  • @XxJackshowxX Good luck!

  • Fountain, oop, fountain!

  • @KrumpingKatie anal fountain!

  • i really like this guy. i don't know what it is, but i would take my dog to him. haha

  • @lizh0716 Thanks, I treat my patients like my own dogs. Thanks for watching

  • oh my, how did i get here !! Lol...

  • today i learned about anal glands...........wonder whats in store for tomorrow........

  • @XoBleedingHeartoX glad you enjoyed the glandular fountain!

  • That's right! Haha.

  • We are a rural clinic. so i see some really... "interesting" stuff with large farm animals. Haha.

  • @MacMac2BooYa I worked dairy, beef and horses for 10 years in a mixed practice. Lots of poop

  • Hahah! I love you Dr. Greg. I'm a veterinarian assistant and i do all that stuff and MORE! and i love watching you to keep learning. haha. you're so funny.

  • @MacMac2BooYa Thanks, I try to educate and entertain to make it less gross and fun

  • Fountain LOL

  • Love these videos! I'm a tech and can't tell you how many times people ask me some of these questions...practically and professionally done.

  • Cute under bite!

Im taking a class at New Market Skills center where i am taking the vett tech program and we have to do this on dog wash days.

  • @MiKabuki16 Lucky you! Have fun.

  • Fountain Fountain :P

    lololololol

    BAHAHAHAhA

  • Hello Dr. Greg,

My miniature schnauzer has to have her anal glands expressed at least once a month. Lately I have had to take her every 2 weeks to get it expressed. The veterinary technician told me each time that the glands were full and she expressed quite a bit (brownish liquid). I have had to pay every time. I hope I can save some money by doing it myself. My question is this: is it normal to have to epress the glands every 2 weeks? My doggy is 2 years old. Thank you.

  • @andyschnauzer Purebred dogs may have food allergies resulting in chronic anal gland inflammation. Make sure you are feeding him a good quality hypoallergenic dog food and avoiding those problematic allergenic treats and chews.I wrote the book Dog Dish Diet just because of dogs like yours. Your dogs glands are chronically inflamed and fill up quickly or prone to filling due to the breed.

  • @Truthrevealed21 warm compress and an adult aspirin twice daily for 4 days may help. If swelling is due to being infected the anal gland may abscess and need antibiotics. Could be a hernia if he has been constipated ,

  • Comment removed

  • @Truthrevealed21 Aspirin really helps and is very safe as long as it isn't used all the time!

  • @Truthrevealed21 how dare u own a dog if u cant be bothered to cough up the money and pay for the vet visit and meds. if it was u, u would! sorry to sound very harsh but people you shouldn't have dogs. take him to the vets ffs! do the dog some justice - its animal cruelty.

  • Thank you for posting on this topic . I found it simple and easy to understand. I feel confident enough to attempt on my own now, but if I chicken out, I'm glad to know that I shouldn't be embarrassed to talk to my vet next time. Thanks so much!

    Tia in Texas

  • @davidsoncountry Hi Tia, Glad you found it helpful. There is no shame in reluctance when it comes to glands. Most people wouldn't want to try this! Thanks for watching

  • @DrGregDVM

Thank you for posting this informative video, Dr Greg. I have a question. I did this to my 20 lbs dog. I squeezed from the outside and nothing came out. I then had to insert my index finger inside the anus and squeeze with my thumb and felt the li

  • @eagonzalez85 The liquid is usually clear and runny with some brownish specks in it. If the gland does not empty for some time, the anal gland juices become brown and pasty. If infection sets in, they become yellowish and tinged with blood. Sounds like you did the procedure correctly and got results.Merry Christmas!

  • @DrGregDVM Thank you very much for replying so quickly, Dr. Greg. I am excited to know I actually squeezed dog anal glands correctly, ha ha. You are very courageous in what you do. My deepest respect and appreciation to your profession. God bless and have a Happy New Year

  • @eagonzalez85 Happy new year to you also!

  • @DrGregDVM Thank you for posting this inofrmative video, Dr Greg. I have a question. I did this to my 20lbs dog, ironically on Christmas Day. I first tried squeezing the glands from the outside but nothing came out. I then had to insert my index finger inside the anus and squeeze with my thumb from the 8 and 4 o'clock position. Sure enough, I felt the liquid excrement pour out. My concern is that the liquid was clear and water-like not colored. Did I do the procedure correctly?

  • You are so funny!! I really enjoyed this video...despite the "topic" haha!

  • @1fyou0nlyknew Thanks for watching! Glad I could educate and entertain That's my goal

  • He is funny!! Fountain! Fountain! LOL

  • @smartin730 Well it did look like a fountain!

  • Thank you! My King Charles Spaniel has had chronic anal gland problems for years now. I have to take him to groomer once a month to empty, because I never knew how to check his glands. Will definitely attempt this during his next bath time. I think I get it now. =D

  • @NotUrAvgChic Glad that the video helps you understand the anatomy and anal gland issues!

  • my gag reflex went off when the "juice" oozed out hahaha i've got mad respect for vets now! very helpful info for my yorkie so thanks alot!!!

  • @wallang Glad it was only the reflex! Glad it helped...thanks for enduring it and watching!

  • where is the glove ??

  • @yonghost What is your question?

  • Sorry to be gross. Some words just come to mind!

  • the word, "juice" will never be right for me again!

  • Dr Greg, I have a short haired dog, he's a white lab, so I've never had to take him to a groomer. I know they do the anal glands too. If he's not bothered by them do I need to worry about his anal glands? Or do I only deal with them if he seems uncomfortable? Thanks!

  • @darkdaygirl My three dogs are never bothered by anal glands so I don't worry about them. Individual dogs can have anal gland problems due to food allergy and bad plumbing (especially small dogs!)

  • Ugh I'm in the weird part of youtube

  • @iCantEditBro no you're not, this is useful if you have a puppy :-)

  • @iCantEditBro its not weird. its just somethiny you could learn about :)

  • I probably shouldn't be here.

  • Very good demonstration, thank you. My 10 y/o dachsund had his glands emptied by groomer, two weeks later full again, licking, so I expressed them externally, good result but RED and bloody fluid from both sides. Took Oscar to vet clinic, they said not infected and they expressed again. One week later, licking again, so I checked, not hard, seemed empty, expressed smaller amount mostly bloody fluid. Never pus. Is bloody OK? Clinic said did not need antibiotic. Maybe weekly is best?

  • @adolfo239 Anal glands may be helped with a better diet. Check my website dogdishdietcom . I advise more oils, hypoallergenic food, and no allergenic ingredients. Just dogs just can't eat some commercial foods.Express weekly, feed hypoallergenic diet, more oils, raw food, or even homecooked food.

  • Hahaha I think I love you! You are so hilarious! You made this as enjoyable as possible to watch! <3

  • @dmspring1987 My goal is to entertain as well as educate. However I am always a bit nervous about stepping over the line and being unprofessional. Thanks for encouraging me to have a little fun

  • i take my beagle to the vet to get the anal glad expressed and when i brought her home she still scooted now it's non stop everyday it seems like she scoots what's going on? it can't be her anal gland all the time i took in poop to the vet and they never called me about any results

  • @chick8526 Dogs often scoot due to irritation of the glands from allergies too. Flea allergy or food allergy can also irritate the area. Make sure and discontinue biscuits or treats with wheat(greenies milkbones) check for fleas. Check out dogdishdietcom. Rub hydrocortisone cream on her anal area for two to three days

  • Ok.. I have a mixed breed dog. (Husky x Kelpie x Corgi x GSD x Shiba Inu) and she is only 15 months old a rescue from the streets. Lately she has been licking her rear end ALL the time and she does jump up on random times... What do I do?

  • @DogExpert1 Check for fleas and bites near the tail. Look for fleas, rash, infections. That causes same behavior. Lift tail and push at four and eight o'clock. See if the anal glands empty. Have the anal glands checked by groomer or vet.

  • @DrGregDVM I really dont wanna put my fingers on my dogs butt hole o..o Brush her everyday (long haired, thick haired dog, you can see her in my videos) and Really haven't checked for anything..

  • @DogExpert1 Then change the food and/or check for fleas and see if that helps. Remember to not feed allergenic food and treats with wheat gluten

  • force the dog to read the coalition manifesto and its glands will empty without even having to touch your pet.that may be far to cruel though.

  • @jaxjax6969 What is the coalition manifesto?

  • Foutain... ooop fountain! lol

  • @EccentricSmiles Nice jet isn't it? Thanks for watching!

  • @DrGregDVM Yes, indeed. lol All joking aside, this was very helpful. :) Thank you!

  • Thank you for this video. I can now do this myself when I wash my dog tomorrow. Thanks again :)

  • @nancykan2 Thanks for watching. Good luck squeezing!

  • @DrGregDVM What if the dog's anal gland juice has some granules in it, is that normal??

  • @MrTyranwilliams Pasty and stinky is normal. Does your dog scoot?, release his gland alot?, or lick himself?

Sounds like his glands are a bit runny. What type of dog is he?

  • @DrGregDVM He is a toy poodle, he does scoot but not often maybe once a month. He does not release his glands at all or lick them. We went to the groomers yesterday and she said the juice was pasty a light brown a tan color it did stink and she said it had granules in it.

  • @MrTyranwilliams Sounds like normal glandular stuff. If there are no clinical signs, should be OK

  • @MrTyranwilliams When a dog gets excited or releases them from fear, they can be quite liquidy. I was reminded of that yesterday when a dog squirted me.

  • i have never done that to my two year old dog.. I've seen him "scooting?" yesterday.. after he pooped jelly like thing.. is that already a disease?? I'm from the philippines by the way.. thanks!!

  • @iAmMavie Means that your dog has an irritating colitis or in other words, an inflamed rectum. Many times a new treat can cause this. That's why I wrote the Dog Dish Diet, to help people with dogs that have symptoms like your dog does.Stay away from biscuits and Greenies that can cause that. Other parasites and worms can cause it too.

  • My cat does this. When she's not farting.

I now stay away from scratching/stroking the fur in the area behind her legs.

  • *by 'does this' I mean it squirts if I'm too fast in my stroking/scratching. :D

  • @Oscy Well at least she doesn't fill up and hurt.

  • Hi I have a little Teacup Chihuahua and she's started using the bathroom all over the house! She use to wait to go out but now she goes at least once every hour or so and we're constantly stepping in it. She also puts her tail up under her when she's trying to "go", which she never used to do. I think she's about 4 1/2 to 5 years old and this is out of the ordinary for her. Do you have any advice or tips on what's wrong and how we can help her, and would emptying her anal glands help her at all?

  • @Kate91994 Is she peeing in the house or pooping? Emptying her glands may help but it sounds more like a bladder infection. She probably need her urine checked and a course of antibiotics. If she's straining to poop could be anal glands or constipation. A change in diet or new treat could cause straining.

  • Very informative..... maybe I should show my vet this in the morning. My 2 yr old male has severe AG problems and is now struggling to walk and yelping in pain and laid in his bed for 12 days. Despite being to the vets 2 times they only gave him 150mg Clindomycin twice a day (oral) and it has had no effect. When I asked for an appointment on Saturday they told me he'll be fine until next week!...... I don't think vets in the UK are up to the same standard as the US!

  • It was a good video! It wasn't bad! Very informative. Thanks. :)

  • @Sykedhorse Thanks, in my amateur made chronicals of what I do through the day, I try to educate and have some fun!

  • Veterinarians are awesome funny people :) I can't wait to be one someday!

  • @goldenretluver93 It's a great job, but can be sad too. Learn to deal with people and stressful situations. The other side is really fun. We all love to help animals.

  • @DrGregDVM I can't be one to say I've seen it all, but I do understand. I am in college hopefully heading to be a Veterinarian. I've worked in different places making sure that this is what I want to do. This is including working at a Pet Resort, Volunteering with my local animal control, and interning my senior year of high school at a veterinary clinic. I am still committed, and hopefully have a little insight of what I am getting into. But the rewards in the end, I hope, will pay off!

  • @DrGregDVM You have had very helpful experience and great insight. Just keep learning about animals, people , and yourself. Good job!

  • HAHAHA fountain fountain! xD

  • @Saence Fountain of anal expression> Tx for watching

  • Thank you so much for this informative video I have noticed that smell left on blankets and bed. My dog like mentioned in video would jump up from a deep sleep, scoot across the floor and lick her self. You have helped me and saved my pets butt. Thank you

  • @TheBrandongorman1 Thanks for watching and I'm really glad it helped

  • im gonna throw up D:

  • @kaurpoiss1 Sorry to make you ill, but thanks for watching!

  • If I offer 20 bucks, could you
