That was one of the problems with the show after the movie came out. They also had a nasty habit of having dead autobots (not optimus prime) make strange reappearances without any backstory.

yeah.....I hate the lack of detail in this...at the end of Dark Awakening Prime was missing an arm and was all beat up from the original Megatron fight in the movie. Here he looks like new. dark Awakening was done after the movie so there was no excuse
Even though they brought Prime back it was not the same. Iron Hide, Jazz, Jetfire and the rest of the old Autobots were not around. I was not feeling the newer autobots as much as the old ones. This is probably why the cartoon lost its ratings, couldn't get more money, and the show had to end.
@kizzmac You have a point, I too had a hard time accepting the new transformers. The reason being is because they abruptly just shot them in the movie and expected us to love them. Had they made some sort of cameo appearances here and there in Season 1 and 2, perhaps it might of been different and we would of gotten used to them.

Oh god, THIS is G1? THIS is the cartoon everyone's been telling me is the best thing since life began crawling out of the swamps? Holy fucking shit! The animation is crappy, the voice acting (except for Michael Bell's) is atrocious and anyone who thinks that this should be held up as the sterling example of why Transformers is great should be dragged into a shed and shot. The movies were better than this, and I even hate the fucking movies!
Wait. While you're not wrong about the problems in the series, and it's refreshing to see someone objectively note them, have a little respect for the series that started it, because you wouldn't have Transformers today without it.
It was a different time, when the FCC first allowed toy ads-as-entertainment, and they rushed to get established. This sort of thing wasn't allowed even a couple of years before. While it has obvious problems, it was breaking new ground in toys and kids shows.

I think it's less of a case of 1990s > 1980s, and instead something I've not run across before. It's a variation on Japan > US, where Comics > Cartoon. Again, it's personal taste, but I would argue that without the cartoon, Transformers wouldn't have been the mainstay it is today, and wouldn't have had as many toylines as it did. Plenty of comic books are being turned into movies, but fans demanded Cullen (and Welker) and "the sound". Those aren't comic book things; people recognize the cartoon.
thats why its called adaptation decay... but the writers have to choose either to keep most or throw it all out to sell something. In that sense some people forget that theres only so muc h you can put within 2 hours or 24 episodes. I do agree that voice acting in general needs a overhaul and animation in the west needs to be taken seriously instead of it being just a 'kids show'

the writers were the ones who wanted to bring him back. Hasbro, the company that owned the toyline, wanted him to stay dead. But fanpressure, and with the scriptwriters' insistance, allowed for these episodes.
I always had a problem with this return because when he was last seen he was half destroyed. they so could have used that as an excuse to rebuild him too. I hate it when they can't write their way out of a hole they wrote themselves into XP They should have found Optimus' body floating in orbit around that star with half of him missing, THEN used the quintesson to rebuild him minus armor to introduce the metal they used to complete him...still I'm just nit-picking. XD

One thing puzzled me though, what happened to Optimus between this episode and when he died in the movie? I don't understand why he was on a ship all of a sudden.
There was an episode called "Dark Awakening", where he was resurrected as a zombie. Some sequences in "The Return of Optimus Prime" provide more detail about (well, rewrite, actually) the last few moments of Dark Awakening, enabling him to be properly resurrected.
Basically, Transformers was getting stale with 3 seasons of Optimus and his hokey Autobats vs the Decepticons. Hasbro felt that Transformers didn't have enough "attitude" and plus they wanted to make more toys for people to buy, so they killed everybody off. The only problem is that Rodimus Prime was such a dick, that everybody wanted Optimus back and so they gave us what we wanted. The plot is just strewn together to do all that, in my opinion.
fans generally hated Rodimus; it was because of that retard that Megatron was able to kill him in the first place, had Rodimus not gotten in the way, Megatron would not have gotten the chance to blast Optimus.
Megatron has always been weak, and even upgraded as Galvatron WITHOUT AN UPGRADE Optimus was STILL able to beat the shit out of Galvatron.
Yeah I'm up with all that, lol. I just missed the one where he got put on the ship, I thought this continued on from the film which was confusing as a cat made of water!
Overlooked in all this was the fact that the Protectobots pulled off a minor medical miracle in creating the exo-legs so that she could walk NORMALLY in the first place, something we humans have yet to do right now. Apply this to the current paralyzed people and quadraplegics and bring about a better quality of life to everyone...what's to hate about that?

One thing is worth pointing out here, the professor with the scar on his face blames Optimus for what happened to him? That's a stupid reason to hate someone. And since Megatron threw the flask contaning the explosive chemicals, wouldn't the guy's face be more fucked up than just having a mere scratch? Cuz I was thinking he'd have more of a melted mutilated face like the Phantom of the Opera.
Pretty much all three of them. But if I had to choose one, I'd say Prime's death in the original movie. Of course it's worth saying that both Hotrod and the scriptwriters of the movie are to blame for the most part. But I don't blame Hotrod as much as I blame the scriptwriters for it.

@AeonMagnus That's more than I can say for some other old 80's cartoon shows I've seen. At any rate, this was my most favorite episode as a kid anyway, I first saw it when I was 4-5 years old...Ah, the nostalgia still holds on.

yeah.....I hate the lack of detail in this...at the end of Dark Awakening Prime was missing an arm and was all beat up from the original Megatron fight in the movie. Here he looks like new. dark Awakening was done after the movie so there was no excuse

Even though they brought Prime back it was not the same. Iron Hide, Jazz, Jetfire and the rest of the old Autobots were not around. I was not feeling the newer autobots as much as the old ones. This is probably why the cartoon lost its ratings, couldn't get more money, and the show had to end.

@kizzmac You have a point, I too had a hard time accepting the new transformers. The reason being is because they abruptly just shot them in the movie and expected us to love them. Had they made some sort of cameo appearances here and there in Season 1 and 2, perhaps it might of been different and we would of gotten used to them.

Oh god, THIS is G1? THIS is the cartoon everyone's been telling me is the best thing since life began crawling out of the swamps? Holy fucking shit! The animation is crappy, the voice acting (except for Michael Bell's) is atrocious and anyone who thinks that this should be held up as the sterling example of why Transformers is great should be dragged into a shed and shot. The movies were better than this, and I even hate the fucking movies!

Wait. While you're not wrong about the problems in the series, and it's refreshing to see someone objectively note them, have a little respect for the series that started it, because you wouldn't have Transformers today without it.
It was a different time, when the FCC first allowed toy ads-as-entertainment, and they rushed to get established. This sort of thing wasn't allowed even a couple of years before. While it has obvious problems, it was breaking new ground in toys and kids shows.

nearly all 1980's cartoons suffered the same thing you idiot. Just because your spoiled by 1990-2000 with shiny graphics and CGI should not lower the groundbreaking series that Transformer's Generation 1 was. Just because its not shiny like Gundam Seed or any of those other mecha animes post 1995 should not be held against them.

I think it's less of a case of 1990s > 1980s, and instead something I've not run across before. It's a variation on Japan > US, where Comics > Cartoon. Again, it's personal taste, but I would argue that without the cartoon, Transformers wouldn't have been the mainstay it is today, and wouldn't have had as many toylines as it did. Plenty of comic books are being turned into movies, but fans demanded Cullen (and Welker) and "the sound". Those aren't comic book things; people recognize the cartoon.

thats why its called adaptation decay... but the writers have to choose either to keep most or throw it all out to sell something. In that sense some people forget that theres only so muc h you can put within 2 hours or 24 episodes. I do agree that voice acting in general needs a overhaul and animation in the west needs to be taken seriously instead of it being just a 'kids show'

the writers were the ones who wanted to bring him back. Hasbro, the company that owned the toyline, wanted him to stay dead. But fanpressure, and with the scriptwriters' insistance, allowed for these episodes.

I always had a problem with this return because when he was last seen he was half destroyed. they so could have used that as an excuse to rebuild him too. I hate it when they can't write their way out of a hole they wrote themselves into XP They should have found Optimus' body floating in orbit around that star with half of him missing, THEN used the quintesson to rebuild him minus armor to introduce the metal they used to complete him...still I'm just nit-picking. XD

There was an episode called "Dark Awakening", where he was resurrected as a zombie. Some sequences in "The Return of Optimus Prime" provide more detail about (well, rewrite, actually) the last few moments of Dark Awakening, enabling him to be properly resurrected.

Basically, Transformers was getting stale with 3 seasons of Optimus and his hokey Autobats vs the Decepticons. Hasbro felt that Transformers didn't have enough "attitude" and plus they wanted to make more toys for people to buy, so they killed everybody off. The only problem is that Rodimus Prime was such a dick, that everybody wanted Optimus back and so they gave us what we wanted. The plot is just strewn together to do all that, in my opinion.

fans generally hated Rodimus; it was because of that retard that Megatron was able to kill him in the first place, had Rodimus not gotten in the way, Megatron would not have gotten the chance to blast Optimus.
Megatron has always been weak, and even upgraded as Galvatron WITHOUT AN UPGRADE Optimus was STILL able to beat the shit out of Galvatron.

Overlooked in all this was the fact that the Protectobots pulled off a minor medical miracle in creating the exo-legs so that she could walk NORMALLY in the first place, something we humans have yet to do right now. Apply this to the current paralyzed people and quadraplegics and bring about a better quality of life to everyone...what's to hate about that?

One thing is worth pointing out here, the professor with the scar on his face blames Optimus for what happened to him? That's a stupid reason to hate someone. And since Megatron threw the flask contaning the explosive chemicals, wouldn't the guy's face be more fucked up than just having a mere scratch? Cuz I was thinking he'd have more of a melted mutilated face like the Phantom of the Opera.

Pretty much all three of them. But if I had to choose one, I'd say Prime's death in the original movie. Of course it's worth saying that both Hotrod and the scriptwriters of the movie are to blame for the most part. But I don't blame Hotrod as much as I blame the scriptwriters for it.
