I was overjoyed to see Bernero lose this week, He gave me the impression of being in the pocket of the union bosses. As Peter Schiff said in a debate with Bernero, the automakers should have been allowed to fail so that better people could take over the assets and more humble and less pampered workers (working for less money) could do their mindless work on the assembly line. Speaking of overjoyed, Schiff and I are well positioned to prosper from the Fed's QE announcement. Precious metals ahoy!
All those bankers and execs are gonna be suckin off Snyder just to do one thing, FUCK you, the citizen, that voted for that republican fuck in the first place, Congratulations Michigan, on cutting your own throats!!!!!
All you republican fuckin faggots will be sorry this man is not our governor, we got one piece of shit republican in office to fuck you sideways you fuckin retarded motherfuckers! Republicans are nothin but non union pieces of corporate management shit!!!!!!!!!! Good luck Michigan, you let these cocksuckers outsource all of you out of a job! Must be the dumbest group of motherfuckers on earth, all michigan republicans. You think Michigan can afford these Republican cocksuckers or something????
@Stugots08 lol, bitter or something? Listen, Granholm had PLENTY of time to fix the problems in michigan, well, that wasn't good enough. I believe Snyder will do an amazing job at leading this state, it will take time yes, but already you're making a HUGE assumption that he'll fail miserably. Give the man at least a freakin' chance. As far as Unions, unions have way too much power, they get paid ridiculously, and have gouged the auto industry for far too long, Snyder won't go after the UAW
@singitagainjoe25 listen, no offense to you bud whether youre repub. or demo., but I am pro union, pro uaw, and most of all, forever a democrat. I sure am bitter, and will move out of this failing state because I honestly believe republicans are bad news all around, but mostly in this state. I wouldnt hate someone based on their political view, as a citizen, but I do hate actual republican political leaders, they are corporate crooks in my eyes. I am set in my ways i guess.
All Anyone needs to do is look at who is funding the GOP! How can any middle class person think the bankers and CEO's that are pumping millions in to The GOP lie machine are doing it so you can make a living wage and improve your benefits.
Republicans get elected year after year? Michigan has had a Democrat governor for eight years and a Dem. state house. It has only had 1 Rep. gov. since 1978. Detroit does not have a single elected Rep. at the city, county, or state level, and has not had a Rep. mayor since Miriani in 1962. After 49 years, who are these Rep. who keep getting elected? Sounds like a blue state to me. How are those Dems working out for you? How is multiple years of America's highest unemployment?
Normally, I vote Democrat, but this year won't vote for governor at all. Bernero is all about cronyism and nepotism. He closed about a quarter of the dog park because his relative who lives nearby doesn't like the sound of voices, and he also dipped into the park find to make improvements at his wife's grade school where she is principal. The state treasury would be just one big cookie jar for Bernero and friends.
If Virg Bernero thinks Michigan is going to elect another job killing, anti- business, tax and spend, out -of- touch, self- absorbed, , toxic , lying liberal demorat, career politician for governor, well guess what.
Support and buy USA domestic products... Demand it request it do it . At stores and on line. If you want American workers to get back a decent living. Honest fair decent wages. Not slave wages. Come out of the fog dont be a Spellbound on your knees fool to the unscrupulous Businesses and politicans that think they are our kings. they are not. Work for less or else-will leave for cheaper laxed ruled countries ect, ect, and train them to do your work. We must stop this. Support fair wages.
Vote for Virg Bernero tell your members also to vote for him. Your rank and file also to endorse him, dont let them sell you out for rick synder. Jimmy Hoffa would be ashamed at you to back synder. I cant believe the rank and file of the teamsters would even think of it. Let them know. Endorse Virg Bernero be heard
synder is dishonest, no open form debates. Wont show up for debates dodges questions, disloyal ,sell out a friend for a buck. Not for the hard working American people.
The union gave everything my grandfater had, 50 years ago they really represented the auto worker, but that was 50 years ago. Now, the union is full of greedy scum who only have politically ambitions, and care only about themselves.
"Progress" a code word for "Socialist!" They call themselves "Progressives," because they progressively take economies to collapse. Name me a Democrat success story . . . anybody? anybody? Where is your Utopian Socialism Virg Soprano, oops I mean Bernero? Progressives should be tried for treason! Look at what the UAW and Dem leadership did to the UAW . . 1.5 Mil members in 1979 and now less than 500,000 great track record you idiot Socialist leaders and the NAFTA really worked well too. Idiots!
When a company can't compete, it goes out of business. Ford didn't seem to need a bailout because they had a sucessful business plan. If they could make it, why should Chrysler and GM be bailed out?
How do we kick the auto industry? Why didn't the auto industry make cars that could compete? Why, the year that Chrysler went bankrupt, did they not have a single Consumer Reports approved car?
What makes me upset, is I make less than auto workers and Ive been in college for 12 years. After the recession I make half what auto workers make. We all must suffer together. Union workers are great, but Union leadership is destroying companies and countries.
I love this mayor because i feel like he connects with the common people and doesnt give me a bunch of "political lingo"....het gets straight to the point and delivers his point!
ah..Michigan.. federal trade policy destroyed one of the country's greatest cities 30 years ago. People blamed it on blacks and ran north to the suburbs, thinking they were safe in the sprawling yuppie Republican lilly white paradise that is Oakland county. Now, even there, your house is probably worth about as much as your car, maybe less.
@deadpool03mm the rest of the country hates us, either looking down on us as a bunch of God damned yankee commie agitators in the south and south-west or as a bunch of inbred red-necks on either coast. "Detroit" is the butt of a long-running national joke, republican politicians get elected year after year here by playing on white fear and hatrid of the working-class who are now all out of work.
@deadpool03mm Republicans get elected year after year? Michigan has had a Democrat governor for eight years and a Dem. state house. It has only had 1 Rep. gov. since 1978. Detroit does not have a single elected Rep. at the city, county, or state level, and has not had a Rep. mayor since Miriani in 1962. After 49 years, who are these Rep. who keep getting elected? Sounds like a blue state to me. How are those Dems working out for you? How is multiple years of America's highest unemployment?
Bullshit deadpool The UAW destroyed detroit not trade policy americans cant compete with foriegn labor because auto workers are overpaid for their skills.
pensions etc,,, americans should stik together. auto workers are the first assholes to hire unlicensed or illegals to build or remodel their house to save a buck ! now that its happening to them listen to they cry cry cry!!!
@shayner1k sounds like someone is running hate-game because they were too much of a fucking looser to get into the shop. Tell me, smart guy, how the fuck do you compete with the poorest people in the world in terms of wages without becoming the poorest people in the world yourselves?
Its not a hate game deaddrool its the truth. Pay someone 75.00 per hour that is unskilled Is just wrong.
other americans should no longer be SUBJECTED to outrageous auto prices because your union lobby's to prevent competition.
Like I say americans should stick together but as a contractor I have found that auto workers are the worst individuals for hiring unlicensed or illegal workers when they need work done. so you take your buy american sticker and shove it up your ass
@shayner1k your a contractor and your telling me that auto-workers are over-paid? all fuckers like you ever do is steal fucking money and rip off client and insurance company alike. Your in a profession run by lazy, cheating fucking sociopaths. It's also not for you to judge the market value of another's work.
@shayner1k oh, and by the way: the UAW doesn't have much of a lobby these days, nor have they prevented competition AT ALL. That's why we have millions of Japanese imports driving on American highways and have since the 80s. Please demonstrate a degree of common sense greater than a bucket of crabs. I'm sorry that your life sucks and that your a broke-ass, but that's not the UAW's fault. Fuck you.
@shayner1k oh ya: you didn't answer my question: how do you compete in terms of lowest wages with the poorest people ON EARTH without making yourselves like 3rd world poor in the process?
No one is listening to what Virg Bernero is saying. Can't anyone understand that GM gives its workers something ALL companies should give their workers?
AND, a union is one of the most democratic and strongest support of business in this country. If there was no unions the government could easily steamroll over businesses. It's time we stop fighting government with government.
major corporations have to go under in order for others to prosper, although this may bring a time of depression, newer companies can surface, especially ones with futuristic goals.
The American public is sick of the politicians giving jobs away for slave wages in the name of free trade to countries that dont have the same safety standards our for fathers fought so hard for. And the media that supports them and tries to manipulate the American public to believing them. Wake up Americans. Vote for fair wages, fair health care, honest trade with fair countries.
We cant compete when your paying a chinese pennies on the dollar compared to a american. This is capitalism at its core, make as much money as possible anyway possible.
He's a Democrat- ooopss jackass..Its a GLOBAL ECONOMY get over it! Fat ELephants arent any better..This guy for MY governor...no way! He cant run Lansing-Its a dump, its dirty, the roads suck and its kinda gettin dangerous there 'cept for Michigan State..If he cant run a city how is he going to run our state?True Liberals are LIBERTARIANS- Let the REAL CHANGE BEGIN- 2010!
Pretty obvious who this douchebag has been bought by. The two things that have killed the golden goose auto industry are 1) primarily the UAW, but also, 2) extravagant benefits packages for executives (and workers). Fine example of how much of a deadly leech unions are.
What's equally appalling is that instead of letting the companies flounder and either reorganize or be bought, they got bailed out (which did nothing but waste tax dollars and encourage more of the same failed practices).
I own two GM vehicles. But I'll never buy another one. I will not own a car owned & built by Obama & his political cronies the U.A.W. The greedy unions, mismanagement & the government have ruined the auto industry in the U.S. The Mayor is a political hack.
you're an idiot. the people that ruined the auto industry are the U.S. government, the WTO, and capitalists that put profit before people and have turned the U.S. from a producing nation into a consumer nation. consumerism is all well and great if you're rich, but you're going to cause massive depression, unemployment, and the extinction of the middle class. American companies just want cheap labor, so the workers get the shaft and businesses move to China. Yay globalization, yay capitalism.
The UAW hasn't contributed anything to production since the sixties. The UAW with its "going on strike at the drop of a hat and its work 2 hours get paid for eight hours mentality and the fact its been over paid and under worked for sooooo....long and with its do nothing job banks(any concession they make now, are too little too late) has bankrupted GM.
GM bankrupted themselves by pandering to the oil industries. Also, the American government hasn't helped by letting their competitors import cheaper products and outsource their jobs to Chinese peasants that work for a bowl of rice a day. Stop blaming the workers for something they had no control over. Blame the greedy corporations and the idiotic government they fund. The UAW simply looks out for REAL PEOPLE. If you put profit before people, you have problems.
The UAW got ridiculous. The first day of hunting season is a paid day off. There's also a guy I ran into who was bragging the other day that GM is contractually obligated to pay him almost $5,000 a month for the rest of his life and all he was doing was hanging out at the Library. Doing absolutely NOTHING! The UAW simply looked out for itself, not the community, not the future, certainly not the company. If you put nothing but paychecks before jobs, you have problems.
un dia un niño se volvio loco y ahorco a su mama y a su padre ahora que haz leido esto el aparesera al lado tuyo cuando te despiertes y te ahorcara para salvarte pega esto en 3 videos mas. ES CIERTO
You tart, it was your dog screwing democratic president, Bill here China take these secrets Clinton that signed NAFTA. Come on you blowhard don't ya know it's an oxymoron to use the acronym UAW and the word work in the same sentance.
Sorry but you need to read/review all the secrets R Regan allowed China to "steal" as well as allowing companies like WalMart to force American companies to stop building in the US and start building in low cost China and Asia. Also NAFTA has nothing to do with China.
Remember that Wall Street runs the US. Wall Street is all about short run results. There are as many positives things about the UAM as there are negative. Well maybe a few more negative.
These news broadcasters sound like they want to get rid of the insurance and pensions for police firemen military postoffice workers ect... after they put 30 years of work in shame on them. I bet there would be line a mile long to take there jobs at 10% of there pay. Saving all of us money on the products we buy that advertisers pay this media outlet.
What has happened now is a result of all the globalists pushing their agenda for years, contributing big money to both parties so that they get their interconnected, "global economy" up and running, burdening us with confiscatory taxation to pay for it all, and then pulling the plug to cause the most economic damage. Now we have the government nationalizing the auto industry and the banking industry, the biggest private sectors of our economy. Looks like Krushchev was right, after all...
How much cash are we gonna keep dropping into these companies? The U.S. cars are better now than ever before...but are still not of Honda/Toyota quality. And their resale values still suck... who would go buy a Chrysler or a Ford Focus when you're only gonna get 15-20% of your cash back after 5 yrs?
Hey daimal957: How about sucking my American made ass? Its American flag selling morons like you that have ruined the economy of this once great industral country.
No you probably could only afford a used Yugo so your purchase wouldnt hurt anything or any one except those that have to pass you on the highway. Discussing econ with morons like you is like trying to teach a fish to walk. Walmart Loser says what?
you didn't ruin THE economy, just the American one. Most car companies are multinational now which means they get the best of both worlds. Cheap labor, and high profits. Unfortunately companies that actually invested in the U.S. and in American workers like GM and Chrysler are being blamed for being socially responsible. Personally I would take a foreign car over a domestic too, but unfortunately that just shows that America is probably doomed when it comes to the manufacturing sector
These people are very evil may God have mercy on there souls. These same news casters would like the police, firemen military to have no insurance or pensions, after 30 years. Shame on them. May be they should get payed about 10 dollars an hour people would line up a mile long to take there jobs. After all there not that good.
HAHA. It's funny how they say the big three failing would be a disaster. Companies fail all the time and new and better companies emerge. Let these retards fail. They obviously don't know what they are doing.
You have no idea the thousands of companies that are supplying GM. This means everything from small factories all over the country to people that make pallets. This means truck drivers losing work. Your name says it all, and this is the typical attitude that people have. They need to make some changes but you have no idea how bad things will get. Even if you don't buy or work for anything to do with auto, you will regret your words.
I think everyone thought of the possibility of selling products to other countries, but not other countries eventually making better and cheaper products. So they have a point (the US gov't), make competitive products, lower the wages a little if you have to. It is still better than holding on to the past until there is nothing left but regret.
You are partially correct. This does delay the problem.
The point of the free market is to allocate scarce resources as efficiently as possible. When companies fail, the capital and labor that had been tied up in a company that did not efficiently meet consumer demand is freed up to be used in an industry that can better meet demand.
lol nope. Canada... in-fact America trys to regulate what we sell into America (soft-wood lumber)... because it was hurting there markets. Breaking NAFTA as usual.
They didn't make what people want??WTF!! I don't know where the media people of FOX have been hiding. The Big Three made big SUV's because the people demanded them! Everyone on my block had one!
saleen49, yes it's true. They supplied the ignorant rich dummies who drive up gas prices by wasting fuel driving 90 in their SUVs. The ignorance of "not giving the people cars they want" statement is on par with the ignorance of people that make new youtube accounts just to mess with people.
Nobody is buying ANYTHING. Nobody can waste money these days even on foreign pieces of crap. Don't they get it?
The Mayor sounds like Ray Zalinski from "Tommy Boy."
Marty, find out where the police are going to be taking him. Send over a bottle of bubbly with a bucket of ice and a card. Have it say, "Tough break, get drunk on me. Use the bucket to ice down your marbles, Yours, Z."
... The workers then enter other labour market to compete with other works for wages, and this lowers the overall wages of other workes while the union workers hold higher wages and claim that they are the true middle class.
He only cares to attack the Wall Street - he's not attacking the union workers for raising the price of products, making US good so uncompetitive in foreign markets. They should settle for a lower wages and make US exports more lucrative in the international market.
Unions only spell the death of the wages of workers in other industries - higher wages asked by union works results in unsustainable cost in companies, forcing them to raise prices and retrench workers.
hey dummy wall street is the reason we are in this mess in the first place. if they didnt fuck up then we wouldnt be in this situation so yea blame wall street. Its there fault asshole
FUCK unions. The will be the death of this country. Fucking piece of shit unions PROMOTE laziness and FIGHT for their own REGARDLESS of the cost. "Mayor" Virg Bernero is a fucking spineless puppet that will say whatever the fuck needs to be said to stay in office because it's the union croonies that make up his voting base. FUCK Lansing's overpaid workers. TIME TO LEARN THE MEANING OF GLOBALIZATION. A 40lb 12 year old from Bangledesh is more efficient then you overpaid fucks. GM SUCKS.
I bet you own a Chinese sweatshop and drive a Bentley...or more likely, work at Wal Mart, ride a bus, and house extreme jealously toward union workers with decent wages. The middle class was made by Unions and GM. TIME TO LEARN THE MEANING OF MADE IN THE USA.
I agree. My father was a "union man" & he was contantly striking, for months at a time without pay. We'd be digging thru the couch for milk money. Now my husband does work for places that are unionized - the union men stand around & do nothing or threaten him because he's in a non-union shop, even when there's no affiliation between my husbands company and who he's working for. It's insane ! There needs to be oversight in ALL bailouts and industries, not just "suits and unions".
Americans need a great big shot of patriotism to get back on track. Stop buying "foreign made" products and START BUYING AMERICAN MADE products. Products that are made buy our fellow Americans.
Bernero is not paidoff by the UAW. He is just speaking the truth. We didn't have any of these problems until the U.S Government allowed Corprate America to sell out working class Americans by out-sourcing their jobs to Mexico & China. We can't compete with their sub-standard wages. Look at how Walmart has destroyed small local businesses that had been in business for decades.
you're a fucking idiot. I'll save myself the time from educating you but i can't bare not telling you the truth. you're a fucking idiot moron that has ZERO intelligence. Go fuck a goat.
abbev10, You may be making foriegn autos, but you are not selling them. Ford and GM still have the #1 ans #2 Best selling vehicles in North America. The F series truck and the Chevy Silverado. I would not take a fleet of Toyota junk for my F-150 with 252,000 miles on it!!! Buy AMERICAN MADE PRODUCTS BY AMERICAN OWNED COMPANIES!!!
amen. GM should GET WITH THE PROGRAM and stop overpaying their workers. Paying some idiot $30/hr cuz they've been in the SAME JOB for 10-20 years is moronic. this kind of lifestyle teaches americans 1 thing. get a cushy job and milk it. the result? little mexican, indian and chinese guys run fucking circles around you silly american fools. WAKE UP TURD! oops too late.
Fire on Mayor!! You're absolutely right! US manufacturers can't be competitive if the gov't is not covering health care costs as is done in many other countries.
i dont want the government to take away my money and use it. the fundemental idea of america is that we keep our money and use it which ever way we want. take our money away and give to the big corporations that should have known how to use their money wisely.
The bailout of Wall Street and the car bailout are both wrong, now what? Both sides pass their pork through and say "look! the other guy is doing really bad stuff so the pork I'm passing through isn't that bad!" It's a load of crap.
@1966 - the 75 figure refers to a total cost of employees. You don't see it all in your pocket but you get all the health benefits and suck which cost a tremendous amount
Hey akesling, FOX isn't "paidoff" by Wall Street like Bernero is by the
UAW. Most, not all of the people at FOX believe in FREE MARKET CAPITALISM and not corruption. Newsflash... NOBODY likes crooks and we need to clean up Washington and Wall Street now! Let's start with Barney Frank and work our way down the rest of the scandalous, tax cheating, entitlement hungry Democrat party!!! Amazing how this arrogant loser can make pure BS smell like roses and many U.S. taxpayers believe it! Amazing!
Sorry to crash your party but the Republicans drove America into debilitating, massive debt, not the Democrats. If you can't see the link between big business and the media... read some Noam Chomsky. Mayor Bernero's points are logical. Your argument re: 'arrogant loser.. pure BS smell like roses' is not.
actually both sides are to be blamed. this stuff started in the nixon era and nobody has had the foresight to have it cleaned up until the shit hit the fan. and after it did, they still didn't clean it up. and btw, the 'bad' debt was rung up by the fucking moron americans that bought homes they could not afford. this is a good wakeup call for all you overpaid sit-on-that-cushy-job type of americans. get off your ass while you still can...maybe pickup a book. do you all some good.
Rock on dude, 'Faux' News just can't handle the truth, too much big banker money there.
And the US automakers DID make what the people want. Who seriously *wants* a cheap little plastic car? It might be trendy for now, but soon enough it'll get old, I know that personally.

Hey, Mayor, kiss my ass. I don't pay my taxes so your dead beat buddies can continue to get paid $90,000 a year to put lug nuts on the crappy cars coming out of Detroit. I imagine most chimps could out perform many UAW workers. Let your average UAW thug go into the real world and see if they could get paid this much for non-skilled work.
Jimbeaux1962: Go move to China if you don't like what we union workers make a year. You have NO IDEA what it is to work in an auto factory....JACKASS!
Hey, Jimbeaux1962, no one cares what pigs like you think. If you have such a hate for your fellow Americans, why don't you get the fu** out of this country. We don't need pigs like you here!
I LIKE this guy. People don't like the truth and the truth is in the details (next to the devil). Is he or isn't he telling the truth? I THINK so. So why doesn't Scarborough invite THIS guy on Morning Joe? Fox just got boxed!
I think we should be more worried that Manny Ramirez hasn't signed with a team yet! After all the Dodgers were only going to sign him to 2 years for like 45 million. What's he going to do? Man!!
Reeks a horrible stench of yet another corrupt politician puppeted from the back pockets of of the UAW.... Hey Bernero just how far are us tax payers going to be pushed before we finally are fed up your crafty brand of BS! Screw you and the US auto makers who fed us expensive, crap cars for decades and now we're supposed to mop it clean for you and believe you won't do it again? PAA-LEASE!

Actually, these lardassess from the UAW make $75.00 an hour, when you throw in their ridiculous benefits, vacations, pensions, etc. How many of you know these union slobs get their BIRTHDAY'S off, WITH PAY? Does anyone else get that? Of course not! PS: It's also been proven that monkeys can do their so-called "skilled" assembly line jobs. PSS: If they don't like their jobs, they can always quit, right?
lol, yeah they make $70 an hour if you add the pensions, and benefits of every employee that has ever retired in the history of the UAW (alive or dead). That's a long list given that these companies have been around since the beginning of the auto industry. And they've worked very hard to have the right to a nice retirement just as any decent, hard working HUMAN BEING deserves. If you only count current WORKING UAW employees salaries, it works out to about $28-$29 an hour. That $75 is bullshit.
Your name says it all Frankee, you are a FRUAD! I am a UAW worker, I have NEVER recieved my birthday off with pay.... I do however have a relative who works for an electric co-op in Missouri and they DO get thier birthday's off with pay.. Keep pushing the $75/hr though, this means that FORD owes me over $26/hr back pay for the past 14years. ( any Lawyers out there want to take my case? )
You're absolutely right. I hate the way FOX makes up crap like the $75/hour wage. The middle class deserves this bailout. I'd love to see FOX outsourced to India. GM will pay this back...
I'm not defending fox but the 75$ an hr wage is what the company pays out per hr for workers, thats wage+health care, say a die maker makes 30$hr the company pays 35$hr for health care
I love how some of you accuse auto workers of being lazy. You obviously know nothing about what it takes to build cars. I'm sorry Burger King doesn't pay that well, but there isn't much to flipping burgers. It's a good thing that mommy and daddy support your useless asses. Go get a real skill, and stop your ill-informed rants about people who work hard to support their families.
Ungreatful lardasses deserve to lose their jobs. Used to go on strike every three years; a bunch of lazy slobs who thought they were irreplacable; now their finding out that no one is indespensible, including these $50.00 an-hour crybabies. No sympathy here...
It's not the worker's fault, and $50.00's an hour is a lie. UAW workers get paid an average of $28 an hour. The CEO's are mainly to blame for ignoring the marketability of efficient, economic cars, and pushing top-heavy, gas guzzlers down America's throat. The heads of these companies should suffer, not the workers who are just trying to make an honest living to feed their families. Building cars isn't like flipping burgers. It does involve some skill...you know...so cars can actually work.
UAW is a bunch of lazy crybabies; fuck them! Bunch of fourth-grade dropouts who think they should be making $100,000 a year for doing next to nothing. They killed the goose that laid the golden egg for them. Too bad.
Workers in the UAW make 3 dollars an hour less than non-union Toyota workers. UAW workers do have better benefits though...which is exactly what a union us there to take care of. Maybe Toyota companies should be unionized so they can have better benefits. The UAW is not responsible for this crisis. It's the big-wigs at the top who made all the shitty decisions. I don't hear anyone talking about forcing the CEOs to have a salary cap!
People know that Hondas and Toyotas are also built in the U.S. right? So does that mean that if Ford, GM and/or Chrysler fail, that more market shares go to foreign cars that ARE built in the USA? The automakers want a loan, but this loan is only enough to pay off bills. Doesn't make cars better. Companies still end up laying off a huge chunk of their employees anyway. Anti-americanism is when we spit on the Constitution. Life, liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness. Does not say you get there.
The bridge loan was structured to force the American auto companies to restructure, and build the fuel efficient cars they've had in their books for years, but ignored because they didn't see a market for them. Well now people are screaming for them, and they can't "jump the track" so to speak. This bill was supposed to aid in that effort, but a few corrupt Senators decided to take the opportunity to cover their own ass, and bust a union in hopes of better funding re-elections in their states.
The loan does not force the companies to do anything. The car companies promise to change, but fact is they had plenty of chances to have done so. By loaning this money, we are punishing companies that have been doing the right thing indirectly. Failure is a part of the market, just as is success.
So we should punish thousands to millions of American workers because the heads of these companies screwed up? The loan itself doesn't force the auto companies to do anything, no, but the regulations, demands and the appointed car czar which were added to that bridge loan do...or at least they would have if certain corrupt senators hadn't killed it.
We are not punishing millions of American workers. If the money is "given" to the automakers, we are punishing the 200+ million more tax payers. Ask yourself this. We had a drug czar for years, and are we really winning the war on drugs? Government is ineffective at dealing with these things. What makes the government better at building cars than car makers?
You're comparing apples to oranges. The problem with the war on drugs is that when you create prohibition laws, they never work. You're only creating more criminals to clog the system. A 20+ billion dollar bridge loan designed with SPECIFIC regulations to force auto companies to restructure is way cheaper than the hundreds of billions of dollars spent on unemployment benefits, and food stamps for the workers that will lose their jobs.
I will concede that I really can't compare the two. However, my point is that a "czar" is really not effective. I cannot prove that bridge load is good or is bad with what we have because it is a what if scenario. However, from a standpoint of capitalism, failure or success are the only two possibilities. Government does not want failure, but it is inevitable. Even with the loan, significant amount of ppl will be laid off. At least with bankruptcy, debts can be written off. Start fresh.
You don't really know that a car czar won't be effective. It's not anything like the drug czar, who heads a bogus program.
Failure and success are not the only options in capitalism. If that were true we'd all have been up shit creek ages ago. Pass or fail is true of small business, but not over half of the entire industry. Many jobs could be saved with this small restructuring loan if enforced correctly. Of course, this is all invalid since they killed the bill off in the senate anyway.
Again correct, I do not KNOW that the car czar is ineffective, but my assumption always is that government is ineffective. Thus, if US car makers can't do it right, what makes some appointed guy more qualified? Even if they were to restructure, the econ climate is so bad that I do not believe that they can survive. The senate correctly killed the bill because the ppl of the USA as a majority did not support it. The Fed (Bush) may still put OUR money into it.
That's your problem if you think the government doesn't work. Here they are actually TRYING to do something about a major problem in this country, and you want them to do nothing because you feel that they do nothing anyway. That's called apathy, and it needs to stop in this country. We need to WAKE THE FUCK UP, and get the USA back at the top again.
The problem IS the trying. Let the market regulate itself and stop screwing with it. The more with fiddle with it the more it goes badly. Government needs to save money, and pay off its debt first and not play with the market. That's for people to do. I did not start cussing, so please don't.
That's pretty funny..."let the market regulate itself." That's what they've been allowed to do for the past 8-10 years, and it obviously hasn't worked. They've abused their freedom to "self-regulate", got greedy, and CEO's sucked up as much money as they could, because there was no risk to them...only the rest of us. If they lose their jobs, or the entire company...they'd still make millions off the fact that there were no regulations in place to stop them from taking advantage of the system.
The price of capitalism. The PEOPLE who own that company via stocks decided to allow that to happen. Either we have free markets or we have nationalized businesses which I find un-American. For the past 8-10 years, Greenspan meddled with interest rates. Don't blame the markets for reacting the way it did. Governments intrusion harmed economy more than the market did. Remember also, that you AND I and everyone who spends money IS the market.
lol, you don't know anything about capitalism. You go high enough...and you'll always find one guy running the show at the top. There is a major shareholder's committee (aka board). And yes they play their part as well, but the big decisions are always finalized, and approved by the CEO. Trust me, I know how corporations are run. Obviously you don't. Now the board can vote out a CEO, but that guy gets a nice multi-million $ package, and they only hire others that are on the already board.
Also, not all stock holders have a say in what happens in a corporation. Only the MAJOR, and PRIMARY shareholders. These guys are a very rich and small number of people...and usually sit on the boards of every company that each of them own a primary share of stocks. They only hire and fire each other...making sure that, if that should ever happen to them, they never leave empty handed of course.
Anyone who objects to the bridge loans is anti union, pro management, employed, selfish, and ANTI-AMERICAN. If you want higher unemployment, reduction in the value of your home, oppose the loan. Republicans would rather harm a union than help America. Anyone who opposes this loan clearly doesn't understand the ripple affects of global economics. Thank you Virg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It isnt about what is fair... This guy is a complete moron...
It is about what is in the best interest for the country.. Why do people expect government to do everything for them. If the company fails then it fails. People of lansing get your heads out of your butts and vote this guy out of office. Hell, why dont we centralize everything so it is all fair??
Bill Gates said it yesterday. If the people dont want to invest in GM, why would government. They must restructure and if they make itgood
Car companies are broke because they were pumping out gas guzzling SUV's... then came the gas crunch and none of that crap is moving just like the 70's. As well Americans have been repeatedly hit in the pocket book lately so another reason less people are buying new cars. History does repeat itself. Screw their bailout, reap what you sow MF. Good businessmen know that an economy fluctuates up and down and plan according. Half the crap installed in cars is made overseas already anyway. Call BS
So American workers should suffer because of a few assholes in charge? Do you know what will happen if they aren't restructured? Every single on of those auto workers will go into unemployment. Then the people who make parts for cars in this country will lose their jobs and businesses, and THEY'LL go into unemployment. That will result in an ENORMOUS burden on us tax payers...larger than even the $700 billion bailout cost. It will be the catalyst for the 2nd Great Depression.
I AM SOOOOO SICK OF HEARING THAT DRIBBEL... "It will be the catalyst for the 2nd great depression" So thats a reason to socialize everything? FEAR of a depression? I think not. BTW over half of the parts made for cars are NOT made in the US, so how is that going to affect unemployment? Automakers have been outsourcing for decades and now problems have come home to roost with piss poor management on top of out of control unions, why should I give a F!@K at all. Reap what you sow MF's.
There are millions of auto parts manufacturing jobs that still exist in this country. It goes to show how much you actually don't know. The unions aren't out of control, proven by the fact that union workers' wages are lower than those in non-union car workers in companies like Toyota (they make $30+ an hour while UAW workers make $28+ an hour). Try actually looking into something called reality before spouting off bullshit. This is not an issue to be taken lightly. MILLIONS of jobs are at risk.
You miss the point... I with most others just dont give a shit. Bailouts and Car Czars, just what the free market does not need. Free Market = Profit & Loss, good businesses prepare for BOTH and accept what comes! Bailouts = Socialism, but I can tell you are just too F'n ignorant or Union brainwashed to get that.
Any company that cannot survive buy selling needed products should be out no matter what excuses they come up with. Supporting people or business that cannot put out just causes more of the same and pulls all of us down with them.
Leave the Charity for charitable orginizations and Churches. When I have something to give I will gladly give
This guy's a mayor?? God, he's dumb. "Outsourcing our standard of living"? Well, if he's referring to 2 million or so jobs lost after NAFTA, he has a point. But that's the limit of his point. There are 155 million workers in this country, and 2 million manufacturing jobs lost reduces that to a still-high 153 million. We're doing fine, all things considered. We'll get out of this recession. The credit crunch is the reason for the auto companies failing? No, I don't think so.
I mean, is $40/hour worth it for a manufacturing job? A low-skill job that almost anyone with a fair degree of physical strength and technical prowess could do with a little training? What nonsense. I mean, auto workers in this country on average make $28, and it's as low as about $16/hour in some areas. But to make it $40 in the motor city?? Idiots. The unions have gone from protecting workers to becoming economic predators of the auto industry. They have to admit some fault.
Funny how, through all his "factmongering", not once did he present any empirical evidence to support his claims. He just used logic and wild theory. He presented no studies or real info.
The fact is that UAW and unions ARE partly to blame for the extremely high costs automakers have to deal with in this country. They have to provide tons of benefits and exorbitantly high pay in some areas ($40/hour in Detroit, for example) when the workers obviously don't deserve quite that much.
It's $28 an hour actually, and I think all employees are entitled to decent benefits. That's what unions fight for, and the UAW is one of the few that get's it right. Attacking them is just dumb. Are you really going to justify the salaries of the executives, and THEIR ridiculous benefits along with their other "perks" like golden parachutes and private company jets?
The American auto industry doesn't even employ 1 million people in this country, right? An additional half a million jobs lost will only put a dent in the recession. I wish people would stop fearmongering and falsely claiming we're gonna fall into a depression if automakers fail. It's a load of crap! Economists surely don't agree with that line of reasoning. Out with the old, in with the new. If automakers can't compete, let them die and let new competitive companies rise up.
I'd much sooner get a Prius than anything Ford, GM and Chrysler make. They're just not competitive, and thus they should be allowed to fail and let the free market do its magic. Let it restructure. There's no way we're gonna fall into a depression if the automakers failed today. That's just absurd. The Depression, at its worst, had an unemployment rate of 25% (or was it 33%). The current unemployment rate is actually quite low compared to that (about 6.5%). The guy is full of shit.
"Most" companies outsource? Look, I'm no free-marketeer, but that's just not true. Yes, many manufacturing, esp. auto, companies have outsourced, but it's not MOST companies in this country. Hell, most companies aren't even corporations! They're small businesses. This guy is full of it. Hell, I never really cared for Ford, GM and Chrysler. Chryler's only a little better cuz they're not all about trucks and gas-guzzling SUVs and all that bullshit. Ford and GM just don't get it.

Pretty obvious who this douchebag has been bought by. The two things that have killed the golden goose auto industry are 1) primarily the UAW, but also, 2) extravagant benefits packages for executives (and workers). Fine example of how much of a deadly leech unions are.
What's equally appalling is that instead of letting the companies flounder and either reorganize or be bought, they got bailed out (which did nothing but waste tax dollars and encourage more of the same failed practices).

ophachew 2 years ago
you're an idiot. the people that ruined the auto industry are the U.S. government, the WTO, and capitalists that put profit before people and have turned the U.S. from a producing nation into a consumer nation. consumerism is all well and great if you're rich, but you're going to cause massive depression, unemployment, and the extinction of the middle class. American companies just want cheap labor, so the workers get the shaft and businesses move to China. Yay globalization, yay capitalism.
toiletsrus 2 years ago
The UAW hasn't contributed anything to production since the sixties. The UAW with its "going on strike at the drop of a hat and its work 2 hours get paid for eight hours mentality and the fact its been over paid and under worked for sooooo....long and with its do nothing job banks(any concession they make now, are too little too late) has bankrupted GM.
ophachew 2 years ago
GM bankrupted themselves by pandering to the oil industries. Also, the American government hasn't helped by letting their competitors import cheaper products and outsource their jobs to Chinese peasants that work for a bowl of rice a day. Stop blaming the workers for something they had no control over. Blame the greedy corporations and the idiotic government they fund. The UAW simply looks out for REAL PEOPLE. If you put profit before people, you have problems.
toiletsrus 2 years ago
The UAW got ridiculous. The first day of hunting season is a paid day off. There's also a guy I ran into who was bragging the other day that GM is contractually obligated to pay him almost $5,000 a month for the rest of his life and all he was doing was hanging out at the Library. Doing absolutely NOTHING! The UAW simply looked out for itself, not the community, not the future, certainly not the company. If you put nothing but paychecks before jobs, you have problems.

Now we have the government nationalizing the auto industry and the banking industry, the biggest private sectors of our economy. Looks like Krushchev was right, after all...

I'm not from the United States, but doesn't this just delay the problem? Isn't the point of a free market to make the strongest survive?
zeelaw 2 years ago
I think everyone thought of the possibility of selling products to other countries, but not other countries eventually making better and cheaper products. So they have a point (the US gov't), make competitive products, lower the wages a little if you have to. It is still better than holding on to the past until there is nothing left but regret.
Raenydyne 2 years ago
You are partially correct. This does delay the problem.
The point of the free market is to allocate scarce resources as efficiently as possible. When companies fail, the capital and labor that had been tied up in a company that did not efficiently meet consumer demand is freed up to be used in an industry that can better meet demand.

... The workers then enter other labour market to compete with other works for wages, and this lowers the overall wages of other workes while the union workers hold higher wages and claim that they are the true middle class.
Funny.

FrankeeFraud 3 years ago
lol, yeah they make $70 an hour if you add the pensions, and benefits of every employee that has ever retired in the history of the UAW (alive or dead). That's a long list given that these companies have been around since the beginning of the auto industry. And they've worked very hard to have the right to a nice retirement just as any decent, hard working HUMAN BEING deserves. If you only count current WORKING UAW employees salaries, it works out to about $28-$29 an hour. That $75 is bullshit.
phoenixatom 3 years ago 5
Your name says it all Frankee, you are a FRUAD! I am a UAW worker, I have NEVER recieved my birthday off with pay.... I do however have a relative who works for an electric co-op in Missouri and they DO get thier birthday's off with pay.. I love how some of you accuse auto workers of being lazy. You obviously know nothing about what it takes to build cars. I'm sorry Burger King doesn't pay that well, but there isn't much to flipping burgers. It's a good thing that mommy and daddy support your useless asses. Go get a real skill, and stop your ill-informed rants about people who work hard to support their families.
phoenixatom 3 years ago 3
UAW: Unskilled Astronomically paid Whiners.
Ungreatful lardasses deserve to lose their jobs. Used to go on strike every three years; a bunch of lazy slobs who thought they were irreplacable; now their finding out that no one is indespensible, including these $50.00 an-hour crybabies. No sympathy here...
FrankeeFraud 3 years ago
It's not the worker's fault, and $50.00's an hour is a lie. UAW workers get paid an average of $28 an hour. The CEO's are mainly to blame for ignoring the marketability of efficient, economic cars, and pushing top-heavy, gas guzzlers down America's throat. The heads of these companies should suffer, not the workers who are just trying to make an honest living to feed their families. Building cars isn't like flipping burgers. It does involve some skill...you know...so cars can actually work.
phoenixatom 3 years ago 3
UAW is a bunch of lazy crybabies; fuck them! Bunch of fourth-grade dropouts who think they should be making $100,000 a year for doing next to nothing. They killed the goose that laid the golden egg for them. Too bad.

FrankeeFraud 3 years ago
Workers in the UAW make 3 dollars an hour less than non-union Toyota workers. UAW workers do have better benefits though...which is exactly what a union us there to take care of. Maybe Toyota companies should be unionized so they can have better benefits. The UAW is not responsible for this crisis. It's the big-wigs at the top who made all the shitty decisions. I don't hear anyone talking about forcing the CEOs to have a salary cap!
phoenixatom 3 years ago 3
Why do UAW workers even need a dental plan? Half of them dont even have teeth.
brainsboy 3 years ago
People know that Hondas and Toyotas are also built in the U.S. right? So does that mean that if Ford, GM and/or Chrysler fail, that more market shares go to foreign cars that ARE built in the USA? The automakers want a loan, but this loan is only enough to pay off bills. Doesn't make cars better. Companies still end up laying off a huge chunk of their employees anyway. Anti-americanism is when we spit on the Constitution. Life, liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness. Does not say you get there.
tasuki78 3 years ago
The bridge loan was structured to force the American auto companies to restructure, and build the fuel efficient cars they've had in their books for years, but ignored because they didn't see a market for them. Well now people are screaming for them, and they can't "jump the track" so to speak. This bill was supposed to aid in that effort, but a few corrupt Senators decided to take the opportunity to cover their own ass, and bust a union in hopes of better funding re-elections in their states.
phoenixatom 3 years ago
The loan does not force the companies to do anything. The car companies promise to change, but fact is they had plenty of chances to have done so. By loaning this money, we are punishing companies that have been doing the right thing indirectly. Failure is a part of the market, just as is success.
tasuki78 3 years ago
So we should punish thousands to millions of American workers because the heads of these companies screwed up? The loan itself doesn't force the auto companies to do anything, no, but the regulations, demands and the appointed car czar which were added to that bridge loan do...or at least they would have if certain corrupt senators hadn't killed it.
phoenixatom 3 years ago
We are not punishing millions of American workers. If the money is "given" to the automakers, we are punishing the 200+ million more tax payers. Ask yourself this. We had a drug czar for years, and are we really winning the war on drugs? Government is ineffective at dealing with these things. What makes the government better at building cars than car makers?
tasuki78 3 years ago
You're comparing apples to oranges. The problem with the war on drugs is that when you create prohibition laws, they never work. You're only creating more criminals to clog the system. A 20+ billion dollar bridge loan designed with SPECIFIC regulations to force auto companies to restructure is way cheaper than the hundreds of billions of dollars spent on unemployment benefits, and food stamps for the workers that will lose their jobs.
phoenixatom 3 years ago
I will concede that I really can't compare the two. However, my point is that a "czar" is really not effective. I cannot prove that bridge load is good or is bad with what we have because it is a what if scenario. However, from a standpoint of capitalism, failure or success are the only two possibilities. Government does not want failure, but it is inevitable. Even with the loan, significant amount of ppl will be laid off. At least with bankruptcy, debts can be written off. Start fresh.
tasuki78 3 years ago
You don't really know that a car czar won't be effective. It's not anything like the drug czar, who heads a bogus program.
Failure and success are not the only options in capitalism. If that were true we'd all have been up shit creek ages ago. Pass or fail is true of small business, but not over half of the entire industry. Many jobs could be saved with this small restructuring loan if enforced correctly. Of course, this is all invalid since they killed the bill off in the senate anyway.
phoenixatom 3 years ago
Again correct, I do not KNOW that the car czar is ineffective, but my assumption always is that government is ineffective. Thus, if US car makers can't do it right, what makes some appointed guy more qualified? Even if they were to restructure, the econ climate is so bad that I do not believe that they can survive. The senate correctly killed the bill because the ppl of the USA as a majority did not support it. The Fed (Bush) may still put OUR money into it.
tasuki78 3 years ago
That's your problem if you think the government doesn't work. Here they are actually TRYING to do something about a major problem in this country, and you want them to do nothing because you feel that they do nothing anyway. That's called apathy, and it needs to stop in this country. We need to WAKE THE FUCK UP, and get the USA back at the top again.
phoenixatom 3 years ago 3
The problem IS the trying. Let the market regulate itself and stop screwing with it. The more with fiddle with it the more it goes badly. Government needs to save money, and pay off its debt first and not play with the market. That's for people to do. I did not start cussing, so please don't.
tasuki78 3 years ago
That's pretty funny..."let the market regulate itself." That's what they've been allowed to do for the past 8-10 years, and it obviously hasn't worked. They've abused their freedom to "self-regulate", got greedy, and CEO's sucked up as much money as they could, because there was no risk to them...only the rest of us. If they lose their jobs, or the entire company...they'd still make millions off the fact that there were no regulations in place to stop them from taking advantage of the system.
phoenixatom 3 years ago
The price of capitalism. The PEOPLE who own that company via stocks decided to allow that to happen. Either we have free markets or we have nationalized businesses which I find un-American. For the past 8-10 years, Greenspan meddled with interest rates. Don't blame the markets for reacting the way it did. Governments intrusion harmed economy more than the market did. Remember also, that you AND I and everyone who spends money IS the market.
tasuki78 3 years ago
lol, you don't know anything about capitalism. You go high enough...and you'll always find one guy running the show at the top. There is a major shareholder's committee (aka board). And yes they play their part as well, but the big decisions are always finalized, and approved by the CEO. Trust me, I know how corporations are run. Obviously you don't. Now the board can vote out a CEO, but that guy gets a nice multi-million $ package, and they only hire others that are on the already board.
phoenixatom 3 years ago
Also, not all stock holders have a say in what happens in a corporation. Only the MAJOR, and PRIMARY shareholders. These guys are a very rich and small number of people...and usually sit on the boards of every company that each of them own a primary share of stocks. They only hire and fire each other...making sure that, if that should ever happen to them, they never leave empty handed of course.
phoenixatom 3 years ago
Anyone who objects to the bridge loans is anti union, pro management, employed, selfish, and ANTI-AMERICAN. If you want higher unemployment, reduction in the value of your home, oppose the loan. Republicans would rather harm a union than help America. Anyone who opposes this loan clearly doesn't understand the ripple affects of global economics. Thank you Virg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Call BS
NotBlindAndNotCrazy 3 years ago
So American workers should suffer because of a few assholes in charge? Do you know what will happen if they aren't restructured? Every single on of those auto workers will go into unemployment. Then the people who make parts for cars in this country will lose their jobs and businesses, and THEY'LL go into unemployment. That will result in an ENORMOUS burden on us tax payers...larger than even the $700 billion bailout cost. It will be the catalyst for the 2nd Great Depression.
phoenixatom 3 years ago
I AM SOOOOO SICK OF HEARING THAT DRIBBEL... "It will be the catalyst for the 2nd great depression" So thats a reason to socialize everything? FEAR of a depression? I think not. BTW over half of the parts made for cars are NOT made in the US, so how is that going to affect unemployment? Automakers have been outsourcing for decades and now problems have come home to roost with piss poor management on top of out of control unions, why should I give a F!@K at all. Reap what you sow MF's.
NotBlindAndNotCrazy 3 years ago
There are millions of auto parts manufacturing jobs that still exist in this country. It goes to show how much you actually don't know. The unions aren't out of control, proven by the fact that union workers' wages are lower than those in non-union car workers in companies like Toyota (they make $30+ an hour while UAW workers make $28+ an hour). Try actually looking into something called reality before spouting off bullshit. This is not an issue to be taken lightly. MILLIONS of jobs are at risk.

No, I don't think so.
whoo689 3 years ago
I mean, is $40/hour worth it for a manufacturing job? A low-skill job that almost anyone with a fair degree of physical strength and technical prowess could do with a little training? What nonsense. I mean, auto workers in this country on average make $28, and it's as low as about $16/hour in some areas. But to make it $40 in the motor city?? Idiots. The unions have gone from protecting workers to becoming economic predators of the auto industry. They have to admit some fault.
whoo689 3 years ago
We don't make $40 an hour in motor city, that's a lie. On average we make $28, Toyota employees in the USA make $30 or more.
phoenixatom 3 years ago
Funny how, through all his "factmongering", not once did he present any empirical evidence to support his claims. He just used logic and wild theory. He presented no studies or real info.
The fact is that UAW and unions ARE partly to blame for the extremely high costs automakers have to deal with in this country. They have to provide tons of benefits and exorbitantly high pay in some areas ($40/hour in Detroit, for example) when the workers obviously don't deserve quite that much.
whoo689 3 years ago
It's $28 an hour actually, and I think all employees are entitled to decent benefits. That's what unions fight for, and the UAW is one of the few that get's it right. Attacking them is just dumb. Are you really going to justify the salaries of the executives, and THEIR ridiculous benefits along with their other "perks" like golden parachutes and private company jets?
phoenixatom 3 years ago
The American auto industry doesn't even employ 1 million people in this country, right? An additional half a million jobs lost will only put a dent in the recession. I wish people would stop fearmongering and falsely claiming we're gonna fall into a depression if automakers fail. It's a load of crap! Economists surely don't agree with that line of reasoning. Out with the old, in with the new. If automakers can't compete, let them die and let new competitive companies rise up.
whoo689 3 years ago
I'd much sooner get a Prius than anything Ford, GM and Chrysler make. They're just not competitive, and thus they should be allowed to fail and let the free market do its magic. Let it restructure. There's no way we're gonna fall into a depression if the automakers failed today. That's just absurd. The Depression, at its worst, had an unemployment rate of 25% (or was it 33%). The current unemployment rate is actually quite low compared to that (about 6.5%). The guy is full of shit.
whoo689 3 years ago
"Most" companies outsource? Look, I'm no free-marketeer, but that's just not true. Yes, many manufacturing, esp. auto, companies have outsourced, but it's not MOST companies in this country. Hell, most companies aren't even corporations! They're small businesses. This guy is full of it. Hell, I never really cared for Ford, GM and Chrysler. Chryler's only a little better cuz they're not all about trucks and gas-guzzling SUVs and all that bullshit. Ford and GM just don't get it.
whoo689 3 years ago
