I was right! This song is about their past relationship.

It seems like the ending before the final chorus seals the deal. Miley found someone to get her through the storm. So, she has moved on. Apparently, Nick must have too.

It feels like this song is saying that they will always be friends and nothing more. But it's totally cool if you can still be friends with your ex. That just means that you're one step closer to getting over each other.

But that's just my opinion.
