The mother may have left the baby because she was sick... or she may have gone in search of a better food source, and was killed (either by being hit by a car, or being attacked by another animal). Sometimes animal mothers will abandon their babies because they are not interested in them, or they may still be too young/immature to raise a baby.

It's sad. It sometimes happens with farm or zoo animals. If a substitute mother can't be found, the baby will be bottle-fed.
