Never heard it explained like this before...under pressure, is anyone going to remember to hit to the side of the nose? Straight punches or palms are the best bet. The secret is to always throw more than one. Any solid blow to the nose will make your eyes water.

@Cab0408 Agree. Your attacker isn't motionless as in most demo videos, he is always moving as well. Count on him to flinch. Going straight in will account for the flinch, as side strike more likely to miss.
