Just look at his face when performing this masterpiece...this man's glorious music got under my skin and hooked me way back in 1982 my last year at school in Edinburgh, Scotland. Today, some 30 years later I am still as speechless at this man's talent as I ever was. His music has been the soundtrack of my life, and touched me like no others has.
Awesome Bruce at his best.Thats how I know him.Deep,Deep song my favorite from the River.I just can't believe that when I was 15 my sons age,I loved this song and all of his songs except Mary Queen, funny how I still made these same mistakes he talks about. Thanks Bruce!!!!!! WIESS. the best!!!! NYCS!!!
@Jethro719 your exactly right..you have to go through it to understand the impact of this song...makes me get teary eyed listing to it..thinking about my ex wife..and my current wife who im seperated from
This song along with "Something in the Night" from Darkness are the two best songs he ever wrote that explore the unbelievable pain that human beings can endure in pursuit of love and happiness. I am 48 yo now and I swear both these songs still translate today to loves lost now as they did when I was 16 and thought Id surely not survive whatever latest heartbreak I was confronting. I agree though, the album version of this can never be matched, maybe the most haunting song he ever recorded.
Love it can break you, and bring you to your knees. The love I lost I can never replace in a million years, but maybe someone can prove me wrong. I will tell you that no matter how many I try to go out with it never gets better, and all I ever think about is her. We lived a lifetime together, but it was shorter than I wanted. What else can I say.
"Love" If you have it you don't need anything else, and if you don't have it, it doesn't matter what else you have"
GOD Bruce--and did we all-wear such terrible clothes in the '80s. Compare this to his sleek, sullen, pallid, skinny, messy-haired, tight-jean, vest-wearing self of the late '70s... no contest. Give me his '78 persona any day.
I love this song, but it lost its power once he developed that twang after Nebraska. But the studio version is still one of the most hauntingly true songs about relationships I've ever heard. I still haven't found a live version that even comes close to matching its power.
I love this song, but when he sings it with that twang he developed later on in years, it lost its power. The studio is still one of the most hauntingly true songs about relationships I've ever heard.
There are no words to adequately describe the genius of my hero but let me try anyway, one Bruce song would be a career for any other songwriter so you may like other performers , as i do, but there is and always will be only one Bruce Springsteen and we should give thanks for his commitment to great and meaningful music. Oh and before I go thank you for this wonderful post.

I know the pain very well, and you can see it in my videos I have posted about the Laura: The love of my life, and it's a 4pt series. It's a love story broken in so many ways, and I had the time of my life with her.
@unbornchildofsatan Got it. Now, it's a tribute to Springsteen, Southside Johnny, and others from the Jersey band scene. It's also a tourist trap. However, they present really good musicians, so you get the good with the other stuff.

Magic song. it was already a rarity at that time to hear it live.
this was the last time he played this since 2003, played 2 times on The rising tour and one time in 2005 during the Devils & Dust solo acoustic tour,,,,i hope to listen it in italy in july...
I remember rushing out to buy The River on the day it came out in 1980.I always loved side 4 which was very dark and this track has got to be the bleakest.Incredibly moving and sad.
Uncut magazine put out a free CD of Springsteen covers in 2003 and Patty Griffin did a good version of Stolen Car on that.
I remember getting it on Christmas day, I had a little cassette player that I could clip onto my belt and just blast it! - well worth the ( semi) hearing loss.. I, also got the LP sadly the neighbors did not share in my ( GREAT) tastes, those were fun (albeit boozy) Feb days, and The River was fine-tuned to my mood(s)
If you want THIS performance, you'll have to do some scrounging around online for bootlegs. The song is from the River album if you're interested in that.
This always has and always will be one of my favorite songs of all time. I heard the song in Copland and I was a Spingsteen FREAK within the space of a month. This tune is simply. I prayed with everything I had that he would play it when I saw him but I new it would never happen. To hear this one live you have to be very lucky. Peace.
If this song doesn't touch you to the core, love, loss, and fear are strangers to your heart. Simply beautiful and haunting. Thanks Bruce for touching my soul in so many ways.
"she asked if I remembered the letters i wrote when our love was young and bold... she said well last night she read those letter and they made her feel 100 years old..."
Excuse my english but i'm french. In the movie copland, there is the song stolen car and drive all night. It's a good movie and the two songs allow to understand the stallone's behavior in the movie. It's very sad.
one of my first "miss that girl songs" played it over and over! i was 16, but my car was'nt stolen. she did break my heart though. this is a rare live find....nice!!! thanks

He bud, I am not a big "boss fan" but always respected him. Where can I get this version of the song?

If you want THIS performance, you'll have to do some scrounging around online for bootlegs. The song is from the River album if you're interested in that.

This always has and always will be one of my favorite songs of all time. I heard the song in Copland and I was a Spingsteen FREAK within the space of a month. This tune is simply. I prayed with everything I had that he would play it when I saw him but I new it would never happen. To hear this one live you have to be very lucky. Peace.

When I watched Copland, it was the first time I heard this song too! Such a touching tune - Hauntingly beautiful, I hope to hear it live one day!

If this song doesn't touch you to the core, love, loss, and fear are strangers to your heart. Simply beautiful and haunting. Thanks Bruce for touching my soul in so many ways.

This is one of three he sang in Cop Land, the Sylvester Stallone 1997 movie. It's just an awesome movie!!

yeh i thought it captured the themes and the message of the film beautifully.
my personaly favorites from the soundtrack were
this one
NIN - a warm place
Explosions in the sky - your hand in mine
and there was some really good instrumental stuff in there too
one of my favorite parts was the helicopter shot

Excuse my english but i'm french. In the movie copland, there is the song stolen car and drive all night. It's a good movie and the two songs allow to understand the stallone's behavior in the movie. It's very sad.
