  • Just look at his face when performing this masterpiece...this man's glorious music got under my skin and hooked me way back in 1982 my last year at school in Edinburgh, Scotland. Today, some 30 years later I am still as speechless at this man's talent as I ever was. His music has been the soundtrack of my life, and touched me like no others has.

  • This song still gives me chills.

  • gonzo from the bunk was here

  • 6 PEOPLE TO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT...MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Out of this world....

  • Fantastico !!

  • LEGEND

  • I was at this show, thank you so much for posting this. What a beautiful, emotive song but there are sooo many. Seeing Clarence made me sad.

  • I can't listen to this song without getting goosebumps. Absolutely brilliant!

  • He is the one. Absolutely brilliant. There`s nothing more to say. One of my favourite songs.

  • Excuse my language but, Muther-Fucker!!! THIS is why I've been hooked since 1975.

  • Absolutely no one!

He is truly the best, his lyrics are totally amazing and his music amazing.

  • Brilliant, just brilliant.

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is what I am talking about, blows your socks off!

  • ........................... enough said.

  • Awesome Bruce at his best.Thats how I know him.Deep,Deep song my favorite from the River.I just can't believe that when I was 15 my sons age,I loved this song and all of his songs except Mary Queen, funny how I still made these same mistakes he talks about. Thanks Bruce!!!!!! WIESS. the best!!!! NYCS!!!

  • This song. I love it ... the passion, the pain, the pure honesty. I hate it ... forces reality upon you and makes you face your mistakes.

The mistakes of you make can haunt you forever.

  • Wow!

  • All I know is that it moves me and that my friends is the power of "The Boss." X/

  • My dear god. How does anybody write like that? Can any accolade live up this man's genius?

  • read some charles bukowski or dylan thomas and play some boss on vinyl in the backround. Its a treat my friend i guarantee.

  • so amazing!!!

  • this is so Bruce it hurts...

  • what beautiful peace of music, not full packed but decent. and look at the atmosphere there, it's haunting.

  • One of Bruce's best songs.

  • I always loved this song, especially the Tracks version, but it took going through a divorce to really feel the impact. Brutally honest song.

  • @Jethro719 your exactly right..you have to go through it to understand the impact of this song...makes me get teary eyed listing to it..thinking about my ex wife..and my current wife who im seperated from

  • @Jethro719 very true..i listin to this and think of my last marriage..and my seration from my current wife..makes me teary eyed

  • Fascinating and wonderful!!

  • Great, just great.

  • AWesome!!

  • Love love this song...and the video brings me way back...

  • FREAKING BEAUTIFUL.damn i love this even more

  • Decent version, though I do agree that it's futile to attempt to replicate the studio track. The lush harmonising of the band is just wonderful.

  • damn....

  • one of the ten best boss songs

  • Comment removed

  • This song along with "Something in the Night" from Darkness are the two best songs he ever wrote that explore the unbelievable pain that human beings can endure in pursuit of love and happiness. I am 48 yo now and I swear both these songs still translate today to loves lost now as they did when I was 16 and thought Id surely not survive whatever latest heartbreak I was confronting. I agree though, the album version of this can never be matched, maybe the most haunting song he ever recorded.

  • i don't wanna pay that Car :) stolen Car without Radio, big singing Engine.

  • Love it can break you, and bring you to your knees. The love I lost I can never replace in a million years, but maybe someone can prove me wrong. I will tell you that no matter how many I try to go out with it never gets better, and all I ever think about is her. We lived a lifetime together, but it was shorter than I wanted. What else can I say.

"Love" If you have it you don't need anything else, and if you don't have it, it doesn't matter what else you have"

  • Brilliant song. It's not just abbey relationships. It's about growing old.

  • GOD Bruce--and did we all-wear such terrible clothes in the '80s. Compare this to his sleek, sullen, pallid, skinny, messy-haired, tight-jean, vest-wearing self of the late '70s... no contest. Give me his '78 persona any day.

  • makes my day

  • gonzo from bunker hill was here

  • I love this song, but it lost its power once he developed that twang after Nebraska. But the studio version is still one of the most hauntingly true songs about relationships I've ever heard. I still haven't found a live version that even comes close to matching its power.

  • I love this song, but when he sings it with that twang he developed later on in years, it lost its power. The studio is still one of the most hauntingly true songs about relationships I've ever heard.

  • 5 people are idiots

  • @wink2873 make that 6

  • There are no words to adequately describe the genius of my hero but let me try anyway, one Bruce song would be a career for any other songwriter so you may like other performers , as i do, but there is and always will be only one Bruce Springsteen and we should give thanks for his commitment to great and meaningful music. Oh and before I go thank you for this wonderful post.

  • thanks for posting this! brilliant!

  • Whoever posted this file, thank you a million times over. It is priceless. Also, do you have access to any other songs from this particular show? The entire show? If so, I am interested in purchasing it from you. Thanks. Send e-mail to zasbury51@aol.com

    Steve

  • Danny Federici R.I.P.

  • @jjp009 Amen!

  • I have enjoyed this song ever since I first heard it ! I would sing this wif Pride RoK on Bruce, beautiful !

  • how young, how great

  • I know the pain very well, and you can see it in my videos I have posted about the Laura: The love of my life, and it's a 4pt series. It's a love story broken in so many ways, and I had the time of my life with her.

  • @AtlantaMobileProd what a loser you are

  • brings me back to the stone pony biker bar @ asbury park, n.j. where several performers started out before the world discovered them....

  • @unbornchildofsatan The Stone Pony is many things. A biker bar it's not.

  • @RudyCasordapek

i'm talkin thirty years or so back...can't speak on what it is now

  • @unbornchildofsatan Got it. Now, it's a tribute to Springsteen, Southside Johnny, and others from the Jersey band scene. It's also a tourist trap. However, they present really good musicians, so you get the good with the other stuff.

  • really? How can one person convey emotion so eloquently. I mean...forget it I'm speechless.

  • @lp4141 :) I am so grateful to be alive during the time of Bruce! Seen him live for the first time in 1978 and 26 times since! I will never stop going to his shows as long as he keeps coming.... The man is a musical, lyrical, storytelling Genious!!!!!

  • @warflynn You are so right - I have been there since then also - will never stop - most people don't get it - they don't listen - "heart and soul" - I loved it in the older days when he could tell long stories even before he sang every song - that's what I miss. Bruuuuuuuuuuuuce!

  • @Deneised Do you have a facebook? We have a great fan thing going for Bruuuuuuce..... Look me up if you do: Lynn Warf (Lynn Roberts/ Rice) In Michigan! Peace and Long live our BOSS!! I miss the stories b4 songs soooo much too! The man is a genious!!!!

  • @warflynn I do but cannot find you - put@yahoo behind my name and you will find me there - in Ohio - let me know you are warflynn if you invite me - I stay private. Will keep trying to find you also. Bruce DEFINITELY A GENIUS - was just at your UTube page - awesome!

  • Epic Bruce!

  • I would like to see springsteen songs used on American Idol, like the rolling stones were recently. A younger audience needs to discover Bruce. His talent is astonishing.

  • great song, and excellent live version with good sound thanks for posting!!!!

  • My favorite Boss song of all time! The lyrics are great and his voice is haunting on this song.

  • just one special effect -HIS SOUL- isn't that enough for us all and it's fu.king free

  • makes me cry, thats power!

  • highly underrated song and not done much live till lately - Bruce writes such beatiful songs - he just keeps going - love this thanks for posting it

  • @297645 fag

  • @AngryScotProductions well, who`s talkin` there...you fucking transvestite..:/

  • the only boss i listen to

  • the only boss i listen to

  • Bruce is so versatile, there is no one else like him(obviously)

  • thx for the great vid!! at the point of sounding redundant oh well, this song just gives me goose bumps also.loved to hear this song in copland with stallone

  • Speechless!

  • You said it Matty boy! Amazing song. Gives you chills.

  • EXCELLENT~~~ JUST EXCELLENT!!!!!

  • Where can I check out Jeff Buckley's cover of tis song?

  • Who's better: Bruce or Jeff Buckley?

  • Different, no one is better - viewpoints and experience of the listener however, can dictate who speaks to them the loudest... Bruce speaks to me.

  • @deweypug

I always default to the songwriter. Theoretically he sings it the way it's supposed to sound.

I realize that's idealistic, but there is some rationale behind it.

  • I am the same way, there are very few exceptions...

  • A masterfull song...!

  • amazing

  • Amazing version from one of my favorite albums. Sparse, ringing, perfect.

  • Yeah, yeah, yeah. So great. He is THE BOSS and will always be THE BOSS. No one can beat him.

  • this 29 year old song mends broken hearts, i loved her unconditionally once i know live by his solemn words. all darkness

  • drivin a stolen car is a metaphore for living an inauthentic life.

  • @RadMom1 i don't think so, and btw you spelled metaphor wrong.

  • A beautiful rendition of this song! Thx for posting!

  • I think this is my favorite song off the River LP.

  • Thank you sooo much for posting this amazing song/video. Bruce always tells an emotional tale/song & always makes me cry, happily tho!

  • I also wanted to say how well it was filmed! The sound is excellent also...thanks soooo much for all that! I Love This Song!

  • "And I'm driving a stolen car..

    On a pitch-black night.

    And I'm telling myself...

    I'm gonna be alright.

    But I ride by night...

    And I travel in fear.

    That in this darkness...

    I will disappear."

Lyrics that, just simply , put goosebumps on my arm.

  • Goosebumps tell me I'm on the right track...

  • @forbus56 That lyric is gonna be my next tatto! I already got fraze from No Surrender

  • @forbus56 This will be my next bruce tattoo :-)

  • This is probably the only song by Bruce that I don't get.

  • y not?

  • I dunno, maybe it'll grow on me.

  • i love how he tells stories, he is so gifted in words. absolutely amazing !

  • wrecked by then..what the fuck u talking about'bruce is 59 and its gettin better...dont talk crap dude.

  • that`why he`s the boss man..brilliant singer-song writer..my hero..

  • so powerful.

the imagery is depressing and up lifting at the same time.

    One of the masters.

  • he is magic

  • Comment removed

  • brilliant song from the river, one of his most under rated.

springsteen puts so much depth to his songs and this one is no different

  • I concur with that thought !

  • he's coming to finland next tuesdayyyyyyyyy !!!!!!<3<333 i couldn't be happier :))

  • You're so lucky!

  • Anyone else ever feel like his songs were following their life?

  • awesome...and nothing else...

  • Bruce at the absolute height of his powers. Amazing, powerhouse imagery and that incredible voice. I have listened to Springsteen on and off for about 20 years now and he is still a songwriter of enormous power.

  • man that raspy voice, those cold lyrics, it's like a lifetime goes into every song, Bruce is a great realist! Some people I know think he's a pop-sensation from the 80's. Really, who are they kidding, they have missed an education on life, love, sorrow, pain and joy, and everything else. Keep listening folks!

  • @boss49best OMG well said! You are so correct, alot of people do not know him prior to the 80's and BITUSA and most of his best was prior to that! He is the greatest storyteller of all time musically! You are a true Bruce fan if you know when the crowd wails Bruuuuuuuce they are not saying BOOOOO! LOL Long live the Boss and ESB!!

  • @warflynn Thanks mate. From Aus. Reading David Masciotra's book Working on a Dream, about America, and America through Springsteens characters and songs. Pretty deep in parts, but thought evoking and passionate1

  • @boss49best I am from Michigan... I am reading Bruce Springsteen's "America" "The people listening... A poet singing" By: Robert Coles... About Springsteens impact on the lives of his audience as well as Americas literary tradition... it also explores Bruce's words as contemporary American poetry.... very good reading!!

  • @boss49best - well said

  • @boss49best whoever regards springsteen as a pop sensation form the eighties doesn't know springsteen at all.. what kind of people do you hang out with?

  • Magic song. it was already a rarity at that time to hear it live.

this was the last time he played this since 2003, played 2 times on The rising tour and one time in 2005 during the Devils & Dust solo acoustic tour,,,,i hope to listen it in italy in july...

  • ...e guido un' auto rubata in una notte buia...tutte le notti aspetto che mi prendono, ma non succede mai...bella e triste!

  • What a beautiful, meaningful song.

  • Miss you Danny...

  • from a french boy fan of the boss ! one of the most beautiful and simple song ... a remember of copland film. simply magic !!!

  • I was there and it was an amazing night.

  • COPLAND!!!!!

  • An awesome song and performance. He is the Boss!!

  • Thanks for supplying this video !

  • He looked cooler, and more Rock n Roll without the muscles...

  • I love Bruce, this song is chilling but in a good way!

  • I remember rushing out to buy The River on the day it came out in 1980.I always loved side 4 which was very dark and this track has got to be the bleakest.Incredibly moving and sad.

Uncut magazine put out a free CD of Springsteen covers in 2003 and Patty Griffin did a good version of Stolen Car on that.

  • I remember getting it on Christmas day, I had a little cassette player that I could clip onto my belt and just blast it! - well worth the ( semi) hearing loss.. I, also got the LP sadly the neighbors did not share in my ( GREAT) tastes, those were fun (albeit boozy) Feb days, and The River was fine-tuned to my mood(s)

  • He bud, I am not a big "boss fan" but always respected him. Where can I get this version of the song?

  • If you want THIS performance, you'll have to do some scrounging around online for bootlegs. The song is from the River album if you're interested in that.

  • This always has and always will be one of my favorite songs of all time. I heard the song in Copland and I was a Spingsteen FREAK within the space of a month. This tune is simply. I prayed with everything I had that he would play it when I saw him but I new it would never happen. To hear this one live you have to be very lucky. Peace.

  • When I watched Copland, it was the first time I heard this song too! Such a touching tune - Hauntingly beautiful, I hope to hear it live one day!

  • If this song doesn't touch you to the core, love, loss, and fear are strangers to your heart. Simply beautiful and haunting. Thanks Bruce for touching my soul in so many ways.

  • This is one of three he sang in Cop Land, the Sylvester Stallone 1997 movie. It's just an awesome movie!!

  • Killer vid! *****!

  • STOLEN CAR .tracks version is 10 times better than the river version

  • i agree but what makes the river version so cool is the ghostly wales in the background it's very haunting, drive all night also.

  • which version is this?

  • God HAS blessed Bruce Springsteen and I thank him every day for doing so.

  • "she asked if I remembered the letters i wrote when our love was young and bold... she said well last night she read those letter and they made her feel 100 years old..."

  • boss je hudba mojej druhej bolesti

  • yeh i thought it captured the themes and the message of the film beautifully.

my personaly favorites from the soundtrack were

    this one

    NIN - a warm place

Explosions in the sky - your hand in mine

and there was some really good instrumental stuff in there too

one of my favorite parts was the helicopter shot

  • i really liked it when they used this song in the closing of that "rose with know scent" film

    perfect

  • I remember there was an old volkswagon with "The Boss..." written on it coming from the Stadium. Then, we knew which way to the concert. lol. thanks

  • Excuse my english but i'm french. In the movie copland, there is the song stolen car and drive all night. It's a good movie and the two songs allow to understand the stallone's behavior in the movie. It's very sad.

  • That's what I wanted to post to these two songs. Very, very good movie and an exceptionel soundtrack!

  • one of my first "miss that girl songs" played it over and over! i was 16, but my car was'nt stolen. she did break my heart though. this is a rare live find....nice!!! thanks

  • Some of us just get it zig and I've been playing it for a long time , it's a beautifull find at 4:AM
