  • I LOVE this song but to me the Best version is from Sting!!! <3

  • Absolutely fantastic rendition of this song! I plan on singing it to my man...not that I'm Dinah or Billy, Etta or Ella...but I love this song soooo much, and I can sing. ;o)

  • What a powerful testament to LOVE. And Dinah sings it passionately.

  • blah blah blah all of you shut up and listen!

  • I'm sorry guys,...but Lady Day took this song. It's beautiful, always a fan of Dinah, but to my ears, Billie Holiday owns this song.

  • @ilovewiki

Billie and Dinah share many fans. You negate your point when you say that to YOUR ears, Billie owns it. Neither owns the song as it has been covered by more singers and musicians than I dare count. As I previously noted, it was written by Arlen and Mercer. Though I have copies of both Billie's and Dinah's versions, I prefer Dinah. Dinah's interpretation is a forceful declaration of love, where Billie's sounds like a torch song. To each his own, both are great.

  • @direfranchement

But, it is only to my ears...it's my interpretation, my opinion. I prefer Billie's, over Dinah's...but, they are still great either way.

  • @ilovewiki

I fail to see the point in your original comment, but I think it's because there wasn't one. I've never understood why people post comments on a song stating that they prefer another singer's version, especially when they don't bother to support their argument with any specifics. I prefer Dinah on this tune because she never played "victim" in her style, where Billie usually sounds put upon--and for the lyric, I think Dinah's style works better. You prefer Billie's because...?

  • @direfranchement

I fail, really, to see the point in continuing on about it. Why do I have to support it? I prefer Billie Holiday's performance of this song, to Dinah's. Dinah, to me, didn't convey a sense of the song, that I see in Lady Day...Billie, had a raw, hardened, and somber timbre, that conveyed a very sad, yet loyal sense, to the person she's singing this to. Dinah, sounds like she's trying to sing That's all I want from you.", her style here, isn't what I prefer.

  • @ilovewiki

I posted Dinah's recording of "That's All I Want", and she sounds about as similar in the two songs as Billie sounds singing "Come Rain/Come Shine" and "No Regrets", which is to say, not very. After 1947, Billie sounds progressively more broken and one-dimensional---fine if you're inclined to wallow in melancholy, but a bore if you strive to see the glass as half-full rather than half-empty. Dinah's lust for life never left her singing, even after her voice was shot ca. 1955.

  • @direfranchement

Now you're sounding petty, you're turning this into a war, of who is a better singer...I never stated anything like that.

  • @ilovewiki

I'm doing none of the above. I personally find your commenting on Dinah Washington's video that you prefer Billie Holiday to be petty, but c'est la vie! I've spent a good deal of money on Holiday's catalog, and I cherish her earlier recordings. I asked you to support your statement that "Billie Holiday owns this song", and you haven't really done it. The lyrics are a testament of enduring love, yet Billie sounds like she is singing of love lost. I'm sorry you can't hear that.

  • @direfranchement

I prefer Holiday's singing of a love lost, or unrequited, to Dinah's happier version. I only posted a comment, because, that's what you do on youtube videos...you post comments. I'm sorry, if you can't understand that simple fact. A few people were talking about Billie Holiday, so I posted my own. In my view, I prefer her tone and her interpretation of the song, compared to Dinah's.I wasn't posting a nonsensical hate post of Dinah for the hell of it, that is all to common here.

  • @ilovewiki

You may prefer Holiday's interpretation, but you can't argue that her style is more appropriate for the lyric. This song isn't about lost love. The lyrics are basically wedding vows. Also, please spare me the condescension on YouTube etiquette. Thanks!

  • Billie Holiday does and amazing version of this song

  • Dinah and Ella and Billie are some of my favorite vocalists of that era. They would never just sing a song, but they would always interpret it as if they wrote every word from their own life stories. How many times has this song been done, but still Dinah makes it her own! Wonderful! Thanks for uploading this!
