@WatchItPlayed It's an extended out form of the phrase "gg". I imagine you don't play video games as much as you do card games and board games and stuff, but yeah, gg means "good game", and good etiquette in online video games is to tell your opponent(s) that afterwards.
@WatchItPlayed Very much so, they're my favorite kind of game. First one was Wolfenstein 3D, a game as old as I am, played on a Windows 95 in my dad's office way back when. Pretty much loved FPS games ever since, and I still play Doom online today with the assistance of modern source ports. Honestly not a big fan of recent titles with regenerating health and a focus on cover tactics, I prefer games that encourage you to go crazy and just shoot everything in sight.
@WatchItPlayed Yup. The only series today that even comes close to old school stylings is Halo. Although, there is a closed beta of another installment of the Tribes series where it goes back to its roots of being a multiplayer only game, which I enjoy immensely. It will also be F2P. :D
This guy must be from the same place as the narrator in Mythbusters. He keeps saying "curd" instead of "card", just like in Mythbusters the narrator always says "cur" when he means "car". Arrr, drives me nuts.
I need a video on how to know anyone at all that plays boardgames, or (preferably for me, 'cuz I've always been curious, from a distance, about them) wargames.
I live in a big city, yet have never met anyone who's expressed the slightest interest in board/war games. Whaere are you people hiding, I want to try this stuff out!! :/
Just came across your channel after Penny Arcade linked to you. Great concept for youtube, and a great service for those of us who want to know if we might like a new board game.
@DisembodiedBeard Glad to have you come over to check us out! Hope you stick around and find some great games to play (or decide on some you DON'T want to play :) )
Your video was great as always. Interesting timing on doing this particular game. Apparently the guys at Penny Arcade started playing it a few days long ago, and Gabe posted a small blurb about it on their site.
Aaaand you did it again! Another fantastic video. Can you please make them 1 hour long or keep them coming at least twice a day? Great game, another one to add to my wishlist. Thanks!
@TyphoidBryan I think it's mostly because some people can think more easily using the numbers to move rather than the spaces themselves, but I think that some of the special abilities have to do with being on even or odd spaces. Maybe. I don't have the game. I've just seen reviews a long time ago. :)
@TyphoidBryan I don't believe it carries a functional purpose, however, it does give you a sense of how far away you are from your opponent. Basically, if the board is too small, then you are at a significant disadvatage if you go first (you'll likely end up in striking distance from your opponent), however, if it's too big, then there's not much going on for the first few turns. With this, pretty much after each players first move, you're in each others face.
Smart move right at the end. My first reaction was to say that you were six away, so you could move two and attack for two fours, but he would have one escape there: to retreat 1 and only 1 (retreating the two would put Luke on the start space, but out of range for any cards for end game, and Rodney would still win). By retreating 1, he would possibly be in a position to play a five and win.
This looks like a fun little game! A good mix of luck and strategy. It seems to me, however, that the person who is able to do a successful dashing strike first would be heavily favored to win. Do you find this is the case? Or is there a lot more back and forth than we saw in this example?
@niconc2 I would say there is quite a bit more, but I understand exactly where your question is coming from. I'm not sure exactly what Luke was holding in his hand at all times, but after he got HIS dashing strike in, he was not able to follow up with an attack or another dashing strike, I am guessing. If he had been, it might have been game over for me!
The game subtly mixes in bluffing and card management - and these have a surprising effect on what you choose to play or not play.
@WatchItPlayed I think in this way the theme comes through quite nicely as well. The dancing back and forth, sizing up your opponent before the strike, etc. I'm looking forward to showing how the full character abilities work.
That's pretty impressive! The game that is, not your crushing victory! ;) It's got some very nice strategic elements with only a minimal list of game pieces. I create games myself and it's the biggest challenge to keep it complex and simple at the same time.
So, congrats to the creator of that game. Can't wait to see the advanced rules or other modes!
@Lavoye David Sirlin, the creator had a simple goal: Make an entry level game with a huge amount of content, that remains very simple and can act as an entry level game. Once you introduce the different characters, there are over 190 different matchup possibilities. Add in 2vs2 and it's over 20,000 different matchups. It's crazy. And, it plays fast. This is starting to sound like a review, but those are actually just facts :)
a) Can the different gamers "pass" each other? Let's say Green stands on 11, and Yellow on 14; and let's say Yellow plays a MOVE 5; would Yellow be able to move to the place of 9 without interacting with Green or being blocked?
b) If Green attacks with a 3, Yellow has to play a 3 as well; do I get it right that playing a 4 or 5 for a BLOCK would not be a valid reaction?
c) Is there something special to think about the basic rules, if there are more then two gamers?
d) About the Retreat to the DASHING strike: Would it be an option to move towards the dashing opponent? Although you mentioned that you may not retreat while being located on the "START"-field, I consider the MOVE-rule that you may move in any direction. So that's why I would consider a retreat "towards" the attacker a valid option. (Oppinion of the game-designer on this question?).
A) You can never pass each other. If you would pass, you are forced to instead stop adjacent to them.
B) You can only block with EXACT matches.
C) A few things. You add in a second set of the cards you see in this video (the game comes with an extra set). There is a new action as well! I'll explain more later.
D) Moving can be done in either direction, but retreating always must be "away" from your opponent.
@BleedingStraw You can buy directly from the publisher as well - search Sirlin Games on Google. If you mention that you heard about their game on Watch It Played, that helps our series too!

1 more question...
If you perform a dashing strike can you move backwards? I assume you can't but I just wanted to make sure this is right.
Ivo2357 1 month ago
@Ivo2357 You assumed right. Dashing must go forwards.
WatchItPlayed 1 month ago
Is there a specific reason why the board was numbered to 18? It isn't as if it helps with movement counting. Perhaps advanced rules utilize it?
