I can't really make a valid response without sounding a bit pretentious, but I'm just going to do it. It's a pretentious movie, no doubt. But it forces the watcher to either grow an attention span, or leave. Personally, I thought it was beautiful, and highly impressionistic. Just because it didn't spell out to you what was going on; "We're a family with issues", "There's stuff going on here", "We are all connected", etc. doesn't mean that it's a bad movie. That's all.
You get it in novels: 'Tell No One' by Harlan Coben is a brilliant page turner + 'Cloud Atlas' by David Mitchell messes with structure and is as weird as Tree of Life - and even The Beatles on later albums have great pop mixed with art songs but dont hate coz its hard work 2 get instead of straight forward and easy

How can a movie have a feeling of self-importance? The artist, maybe, but not the creation. That's like saying a Picasso painting is pretentious. It's a work of art. The goal of artistic creation in general is to make something that's moving and lasting. Malick did just that. Sorry it went over your head.

You had a certain expectation of resolution, or explanation that has been given to you by a lifetime of watching more conventional films. Tree of Life is not a conventional film. I can't really make a valid response without sounding a bit pretentious, but I'm just going to do it. It's a pretentious movie, no doubt. But it forces the watcher to either grow an attention span, or leave. Personally, I thought it was beautiful, and highly impressionistic. Just because it didn't spell out to you what was going on; "We're a family with issues", "There's stuff going on here", "We are all connected", etc. doesn't mean that it's a bad movie. That's all.

I completely agree with everything this guy says. I don't get why this movie is getting so much praise. I am offended when people try comparing it to 2001. That movie changed the way people percieved science fiction, this one didn't. It just had a bunch of senseless shots of space and shit. 2001 was actually about space so it's allowed to do that. I'll give it credit for doing a great job of portraying youth and innocence but the good in this movie is definetly outweighed by the piss-off factor

Awesome- and incredibly accurate. The audience at Cannes actually booed this film and Sean Penn is even saying that he didn't like the way it turned out. i am plenty open-minded and creative, but i really didn't like a NASA documentary interrupting the characters and plot line of a film that otherwise could have amounted to something better.
