  • Does anyone know or can hazard a guess about how many %'s of the sky is illuminated by the sun at any 1 time ?

  • Why is the sky blue???

    Cause God loves the infantry!!

  • Comment removed

  • my friggen teacher said the damn sky is blue cause is scatters?? wtf

  • yeah, but where the sky ends, endless darkness begins in its most literate sense, so we're all fucked anyways.

  • Comment removed

  • My shirt ain't frikken red....

  • Sounds a very simple question - this is not meant to sound big--headed but we've only just covered it in the third year of a Physics degree so the answer is NOT simple!

  • no michel jackson said its blue...he he!

  • @tysonkoolbreeze jackson is dead

  • pourquoi le jaune d'oeuf est jaune c'est exactement la meme question que pourquoi le ciel est bleu mais est-ce que nous avons la bonne visons du ciel car certain animaux voit le ciel d'une autre couleur.

  • heY guys

  • Okay, forget about the accumulation-atal-anal-fantantical crap.... heres a SIMPLE way of saying why the sky is blue. The sun sets its rays on the ocean which was not said in the video. The suns rays refelct the blue color from the ocean into the stratosphere or higher. That is why we humans see blue in the sky . FROM THE OCEAN........ Then again.. why don't we see blue in the sky at night. Yet, the sun uses its rays at the moon, reflects the color on the ocean.. but its still black...

  • that bitch in the beginning was fuckin annoying

  • One month later he said. The spectrum is the 7 seperate colors that white light is composed of. Aim a glass prism at the sun.White light goes in and seven colors come out the other side. That is the spectrum of light. The sky is blue as a result of light rays reflecting the blue end of the spectrum back at us. I do believe that is the best answer ever given in the history of the world. Not bad huh!

  • There is no object up there. "The Sky" is an illusory surface. Illusory=nonexistant.

The only thing up there is air. Heh.

Why is aerogel blue? Why are bluejays blue? Why are certain opals blue? Because of freq-selective scattering.

So. Why is air colored blue?

That's when the screaming starts. "AIR ISN'T BLUE, IT'S INVISIBLE!!!" Nope, wrong. The only thing up there is air. "Sky" doesn't exist, there is no surface up there. The blue color you see? That's air.

  • why is sky blue? because it's not green! :D

  • Isn't his point that the sky is blue because short wavelength light is more likely to smack into the small gas molecules & get reflected, whereas red & green with their longer wavelength tend not to get so scattered?

If that's the case (its all down to the wavelength of the light) & the suns light is white (an equal-ish mix of all wavelengths) then WHY ISN'T THE SKY VIOLET???

Indigo & violet have shorter wavelengths than blue, but the sky is clearly BLUE, not VIOLET!

  • @ThePokermong Because the Sun actually does not contain equal parts of each gap of color. Instead, it is formed slightly more by blue-green light and less violet and red. Thus, even though violet light IS scattered and gets back to us, the amount of it is so little it barely affects the final resulting color. Furthermore, human eye is also much less sensitive to both violet and red frequency, so we see even less violet than what is reflected.

  • Rayleigh scattering...

  • is it wrong that this video gave me a boner

  • i love you. :)

  • Why is water wet?

  • @khublam its da 2nd state of matter it liquid.. it goes solid, liquid, gas and ionized gas.. :L

  • @galaxy91 Haha thank you G-91, But, if you were a real fan of the Wutang Clan you'd know what I meant. That is a lyric off the GZA's album "Liquid Swords"; Most definitely one of the best hip-hop albums ever. On the track '4th Chamber' Ghostface says: "Why is the sky blue? Why is water wet? Why did Judas rat the romans, while Jesus slept? Stand up, you're out of luck like two dogs stuck. Iron man, be sippin rum, out of Stanley Cups.." Thanx 4 the definition and not being a mindless hater tho
  • This entire thing is wrong! Everyone knows that the sky is blue because god loves the Infantry!

  • because the space is blue

  • 65 people don't understand rayleigh scattering

  • The sky is blue as a result of the light rays reflecting the blue end of the spectrum

  • @tubermier what the FUCK is a spectrum

  • @galaxy91explorer

    a spectrum is a scale.

    as in the color scale.

I think kids should look up information rather than using youtube conversations to learn about things, The google bar is like 8 inches away from you people.

  • why is the sky blue? thats when the angels decided not to take on a piss on us...

  • what a BORING explanation!

  • The sky is blue because God wanted to reflect your pretty blue eyes for all the world to see.

  • haha, nervous guy

  • It's blue because I accidentally spilled my Blue finger paint in the sky.. I'm sorry :( I had to confess

  • Its Blue Because Chuck Norris Says Its Blue..

  • @4evaramos rigt!!!

  • I really want to know why people think "jesus did it" or "it reflects off the ocean". Give me a break, trolls!

  • hmmhmm... i still dont get it.

  • its blue cause you see it that way the worlds an illusion

  • because it reflects of the ocean!!!

  • cool!!!

  • I mean he's right but could they have found a guy who seemed like he knew less about wtf he was talking about?

  • The sky is blue, because the sky is blue! Damn scientist always gotta have a reason for something.

  • @blackguywhoactwhite with comment like that i knew u could only be a nigger. Jesus wants blue so... blue

  • @tyty1794 I'm not a Christian dumb ass lol

  • Its blue because blue is my favorite color. DUH!

  • God wanted it to look beautiful. OBVIOUSLY!

  • What causes prisms in the sky I see them a lot!......On hot sunny days round shapes and other shapes and the clouds seem to copy the shape of the prisms over and over?

  • boring as fuck

  • Blue light gets caught easier than red, yellow etc

  • In Russia, lights dont reflect, earth reflects light!

  • Thank God blue does not get reflected out. If BLUE didn't and RED did, we'd have to stare at a RED sky on a beautiful day. Would be depressing.

  • @djdonniewoo Emo Sky is Emo lol

  • less talk more rock! woo!

  • university of maryland, thats the university im planning to do to. Maybe ill see this guy in 3 years.

  • enjoy your happy life people

because the sky will be grey and soon black forever

    this is true

if humans keep destroying this planet there wont be more in the future

  • I learned during a science far that a colour absorbs that sam colour (red absorbs red) so does that mean grass is actually red but reflects green? Or was I mislead?

  • @BlackPuma51 The color we *see* of an object depends on what colors the object absorbs and what colors it reflects. So, an object you see as red reflects red light but absorbs all the other colors.

The color an object "really is" depends on your definition of "really is", but it only makes sense to say an object is the color we perceive it to be - so grass is green.

  • me was always told that the blue you see in the sky is actually the reflection of the oceans. And the red of the sunset is caused by all the pollution in the air. This as the sun is lighting much more of the earth's surface when it sets than when it is up in the sky at noon.

  • so..why the fuck is the sky blue?!

    cause i didn't understand anything.

  • who chose this girl for this segment?? I'm pretty sure it's the same person who chose the person to answer the question. The girl and the science guy are not individually okey, and they showed them together within 3 minutes. wake up discoverynews!

After watching this, i'm going back to because-god-did-it-that-way explanation.

  • what??? from my science lessons a primary light colour is green instead of yellow!!!

  • i understand what this guy is saying but he studders a little and it is hard to listen to

  • they had to pick a guy that took up as much time as possible - otherwise it'd be a 2 minute 'show' ~

  • because it's sad....

  • FAIL

  • If you're past 9th grade and don't get it. You're just an idiot.

  • @CJAEY LAWL you're funny. Just cause you learned this :). I betcha everybody knows something noone else knows :D. Don't be mean and call people idiots.

  • My 9th grade teacher was an idiot, so that's just not fair I turned out that way.

  • @CJAEY i dont do grades.. we have like year 7 and year 8 not grades and i belive thats different.. im in yr 8 im 12 yrs old... am i in 9th grade? lol i dont know

  • @CJAEY i figured all this stuff out by myself and i never past the 8th grade

  • Learned this in 9th grade.

  • my shirt isnt red

  • A lot of stupid comments below me.

  • Why tell me why did you have to find the answer from this guy??? It's more confusing now.. I understand that the different colors are a reflection of light, but his answer just leaves your jaw dropping saying WHAT????????

  • the whole time during this explaination he is thinking I have a phd in science and you are asking me why is the sky blue?

  • this answer is so boriiiiingggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!

  • FAIL LOL

  • This guy explains it so terribly. #FAIL

  • ummmm...... what??

  • uh huh.... his explanation sucked i still dont get it

  • They need a hotter host

  • Leave to poor girl alone lol :D haha

  • i think he messed up with his explanation i think that at 1:39 he meant to say red and green light is absorbed while blue light is transmitted from the sky

  • why is my ass Red not pink?

  • #LOL #HEHE

  • Yup this guy is no Michio Kaku but that's how it works.

Better than some parents who tell their kids BS lines like "To match your eyes." or "Because god did it." because they don't know.

  • That scientist is shit at explaining things.

  • @gavbag1234 How would you explain it mr.smartass ?

  • @Guttanhehe

    Don't be a prick dude.

  • @gavbag1234 Back at ya

  • ehm this is for small childrens.... Everyone knows that..isn't it?

  • Anyone else notice that this guy was a little long-winded and horrible at explaining this?

I'm stoned, and that was just... Wow. Where do they find these people.

  • @CCCChedo lol!!! it was not not just you @_@!!!

  • #LOL

  • #LOL

  • ok ok ok it would help me understand if he didnt have such a BORING VOICE

  • #LOL

    #FAIL

    #OMG

    #FTW

    XD

  • @TheNERD0O0Z you #FAIL in all except #LOL

  • thank you, i still don't get it.

  • @brattette dont worry, somethings in life are not meat to be understood

    looooool

  • the sky is blue because its not red ! hahaha GET IT ? its not red.

  • @LiveForeveR26 hey FUCK YOU

  • @JTMarlin8 Agreed

  • @LiveForeveR26 shut up troll....u r fake and gay

    loooool

  • The sky is blue because the sun reflects off a particles of blue light. (Not going to watch the video)

  • Oh man! I thought sunsets were yellow and red because God loved us and made them pretty so we can enjoy them! Thanks for ruining my faith, fuckers!

  • Dude this guy was horrible at explaining this shit.. haha! Speaking all stumbly and stutters.. its just painful to listen to. He cant even talk without pausing everywhere and "uh eh uhm".. they could do better.

  • @niggasjit Agreed. He's a physics professor, explains it all. These fuckers never know how to speak, leaving the students scratching their heads.

  • The more in depth reason for why the sky is blue is because the natural frequency of nitrogen which is the predominant gas in air is the same frequency as the color blue. So the nitrogen scatters red and green and reflects blue.

  • @andrewmax123 We should make thei sky yellow. For fun.

  • @andrewmax123 this answered my question better than the video did

  • I ask my friends why the sky is blue, they answer "because it"s God's favorite color..."

  • @gabe7077

sounds like a good answer to me.

If you don't understand something, just say its god working in mysterious ways.

I hear my mom say it all the time so it must be true

  • Neat, of curse I already know this because I pay attention in school lol, but its still neat.

  • black IS NOT A COLOR, its the absence of LIGHT you cant have color without light, why do you think when you put your hands over your eyes all you see is black because there is no light reflecting any color back for your eye to see. hell why is space black? why is a black hole black? because a black hole sucks all light in making no light at all, thus meaning without light no color.

  • but what determines what light colors are being reflected or absorbed?

  • @VickiTsim interesting.. in 2.54 he mentions briefly it depends on exactly how you view it. That's closely related to quantum physics I guess?

  • right, if the red and green are reflected during the day and the blue is kept,

why does the red is kept during the evening and the green and blue reflected

and why isn't there any green EVER!?

  • @bozy99 there is green right when the sun goes away it is almost impossible to see it has a specific name effect, like in pirates of the Caribbean 3 but i doubt it would be that bright :)

  • @pyromaanisi its called te green flash

  • @nicksrobert well that explain everything :D

  • @pyromaanisi u mean the lights that u can see in very cold nights!?!?!?(i think u can only see them in dark places, not very sure)

but the question is, y doesnt the green light occure on day to day bases, just like the red and the blue

  • @bozy99 well if you refer northern lights thats different, but different colors have different wave lengths like from strongest to weakest. for instance if you have a cd/dvd and you put light on it, it reflects as a rainbow on a wall and you can see blue is short and red is long :)

  • @bozy99 there is: northern lights

  • blacks not A color

  • @rangerbude actually noone can tell... scientists say it's not but every colour combined is Black...

  • @rangerbude

black is a color, its a mix of all colors.

Green is a color and its a mix of 2 colors. Black is a mix of all.

  • @lars0 Black is not a color, it is an absence of all light. What you are talking about is a color system used for printing where colors are combined and this show is about real light which doesent work that way.

  • @andymudnic black is not the absence of color at all, black is the result of an object absorbing the entire spectrum. White it the result of no color being absorbed.

in a way you are correct, but your wording is off

  • @deafomega Well there is really no point in debating because the anwser really depends on the way we define color. If we define color as a part of measurable visual spectrum then black is not a color since black is lack of any part of that spectrum that reflects back into our eyes making it visible. But if we define color as something non-physical, like the image or impression our brain creates, then we can say that black is a color. Blah,

  • @andymudnic so colors are the same stuff as we are made off? (I'll check wiki :-) )

  • @lars0 Are you thinking about light or paint? Green's green... it's only a mixture of two colours when it's blue+yellow in paint. In light, green's a primary colour, not a mixture

  • Can you explain to me? Why? Tell me why?

  • Well, 2 possibilities in answering this question

    1) Look for a scientific answer but keep in mind that you will have to use your brain in order to understand the answer!

    2) Rely on the christian answer SIMPLE ANSWER: The sky is blue because god made it blue! He made it a happy color so his children would be happy when they looked into the sky!

    Which answer do you embrace?

  • @99minerkc ah NOOO

  • @99minerkc blue doesnt make everyone happy. some people hate the color blue. A better question is, why isn't the sky the color we would want it to be?

  • @4v3ng3d I never said blue made everyone happy! I do know it makes me happy and that what really matters after all!!

  • who pays you guys to do videos like that?

kids teach this in 7th grade...

  • @yoops me black paint is not black lol); Black is simply defined as the absence of light in Physics (dont know when did i say something against it, I was talking about "color")

  • @yoops how did i define color? Can you quote my words? I said color is subjective which means its definition depends how you apply the word color. Your artificial balck is just an example of the color black. What i wanted to say is Black can be simply classified as a ""color"" and ""not a color"", which depends how this black is apllied as color is a subjective word (i repeated it twice). Black is a color in the Art World if your example is true(dont tell

  • it sounds like he is just making this upp

  • Explain what is the colour when you are trippin' on LSD :)

  • So, you guys are bored?

What the hell did you think was going to happen in the video? Rock concerts, circuses and flying llamas with androids?

No, its just a simple science lesson.

  • Because... God din't want it red

  • @JuelzZantana . Simple minded answers from simple minded people!

  • This is the second video that I see from this channel... are all of their videos such huge fails? I would like to know, although sure as hell I am not going to try to find out.

  • yawn...

  • red and blue don't makes green ! ! ! yellow and blue makes green : )

  • @supervalfar true. but you aren't thinking it through a red-orange-yellow-green-blue-indigo-violet (the rainbow) perspective. The 3 main colours, considered by physics, are red green and blue (as opposed to artists who consider them red yellow blue). Therefor if you absorb red and blue, that only leaves green in the main spectrum.

  • ok he does not know shit

  • wow this sucks!!!! next time bring a doctor who knows how to talk in front of a camera and doesn't bore the shit out of me

  • To sum up, Its just blue, end of story

  • The Sky could've once been orange during Earths first billion years due to the amount of methane in the atmosphere.

  • leaves are green because the rainbow (ROYGBIV) because the leaf absorbs (ROYGIV) EXCEPT GREEN SO IT REFLECTS GREEN SO THATS WHY ITS GREEN

GOD YOU GUYS ARE FAKE AND GAY >.> LEARN FAGGOTS

  • is it just me or does that old man seem like hes just rambling.

  • @12nightmare34 Ye, it's boring as fuck... he's a right cunt

  • boring ass fucking vid

  • Nice to know, but that guy really talks slow.

  • fake and gay

  • actually the question is why isn't the sky blue?

  • @dogman1342 because its night time?

  • This guy probably knows what he is talking about, but he really sounded like he was just bullshitting the entire time.

  • he is not idiodic

  • @Jon58004 - Yeah totally dude, he's just not T.V material.

'Idiotic old guy' you sure Krox17 ?

People hate HARD on youtube, the comments section has just provided a forum for tools to say silly ass things behind the protection of log in names.

And now even I'm doing it, stop the hate or post a better video.

  • he made a mistake. he said the green and red are unaffected by the passage through the sky...but they are...they're absorbed. he meant to say BLUE is unaffected.

BTW: he didn't explain anything...WHY are red and green absorbed by the atmosphere!

  • @mimipipicaca Because their wave lengths are smaller than blu's
