I don't get it I own a Legacy now its great in the snow but I used to drive a Hyundai Elantra for 6 years in harsh New England winters and never had a problem with that piece of shit, it's obvious that these videos are bias, its easy to drive a car like crap and one good, IMO both cars were driven poorly.
There are many variations of "4 wheel drive" systems. They pretend to do "the same thing" but the reality does not support that statement. Toyota showed typical 4X4 performance which in reality is a total of 2 wheels that are actually powered. 1 on the front axle and 1 on rear axle. Differential mechanism being open will guarantee that this veh will not move far.
Volvo had an ultimate system years ago. Others use viscous couplings that work good but at high speeds. I prefer the HUMVEE.
In Germany we have different terms. For us, 4WD and AWD is the same. We describe the other concept than what it is. 2+2 drive. I had two Quattro's. First and second generation. Because you could lock the center strand and you could fully lock both, the center strand and the differential. At full locking, the snow could be as high as he wanted. You gave gas, you release the clutch and then the thing shot off like a rocket on dry tar. Good winter tires required.
Well, we all know Subaru is the first company who invent the AWD system. But unfortunately they didnt put enough effort into it. And now. Audi lead the way. owned.
Subaru is the father of AWD system. doesnt mean he is the best.
@TheWanMY The first AWD car(not Truck or military SUV as AWD already had been used on that field)was the Subaru Leone witch's small engine was just justifying the belief that 4WD cars would be too heavy move(properly).Audi made the breakthrough when they introduced the Quattro(Torsen Diferential)in the Group B championship and gave a balance of power and control.
@TheWanMY No, you are incorrect. Subaru had PART TIME 4WD starting in 1975, at least that's what they were selling in the USA at that time. But it was NOT meant to be used for tarmac/pavement where you have lots of traction. Audi introduced the Quattro Turbo Coupe in 1980 with full time 4WD. To showcase the idea that quattro is primarily meant as an onroad system for ALL surfaces, they introduced the term All Wheel Drive.
They do it on rollers so that the environment the AWD has to work in is the same. Driving a Toyota into the snow and backing it out then the Audi over the same tracks is not a controlled environment. This doesn't even include the bias you have for your Audi that comes across in the way you work the gas in you "test". Yes, Audi has a good AWD system... but you putting it up against a Toyota. Thats like saying I have the fastest car because i took a Geo on the 1/4 mile.
The reason for the rollers was to isolate variables. Two cars right next to each other in a parking lot can give one an advantage. One could be on ice under the snow, or the sun could have hit one spot more, or one could have gravel in the ice.... etc. You put two cars on rollers and the truth comes out. I LOVED my Audi but my next car will be a Subaru due to lower operating costs (damn economy)
something up with your toyota i have a 2002 highlander and even in snow as deep as th audi i havent had problems though i do belive the audi is better
@bluespider90 all tell ya what ok take a simple 4x4 and even a front wheel drive with snow tires and its bye bye audi I guess you need an all wheel drive car cause your too stupid to drive lo
u will loose traction with a middle diferential stupid try all time 4x4 lets see your audi now dumb ass better learn before spewing out bullshit most people drive fwd cars with snows or all season and do very well in the snow
Congrats on keeping your cars in top shape. In the future, you might want to rethink insinuating a person has a low income based on their opinion & personal experiences. Some readers might think you're being a bit condescending. ;)
Into the problems that many of my customers have had with their pre-owned Audi / VWs. I hate selling them, because they almost ALWAYS come back with issues.
@xxsekoxx. My wife & I happen to own a nice home in north eastern Pennsylvania. I have built, with the help of friends and a first rate shop, a 340/365 AWHP/AWTQ Subaru Baja. My wife drives a 2010 Legacy 3.6R Ltd. with nav. FAR from poor. I sell new subarus for a living, so I'll admit I'm a bit biased. However, EVERY out of warranty used Audi/VW I've sold has been a nightmare. They were traded for a Subaru for good reason. My hat is off to you for maintaining your vehicles. I hope you never run
lmao you're a fucking retard, you get all butthurt because they show your audi system failing on rollers. guess what! you don't get traction on rollers. eventually you will in snow. fucking idiot
@ConnorLug You fucking Idiot don't seem to know ANYTHING about 4 wheel drive systems...the roller video with the audi A8 is a fake...Torsen-Diffs always put 25% of the power to an axle...ALWAYS...In the case of the rollers, the audi would put 75% of its power to the axle that has more grip...Idiot, never heard of Torque Sensing Differentials, right? Pussy!
It took a long time to get to level 4 from level 3, so I suspect the compressor wasn't fully optimal, or there was a leak somewhere in some suspension airbag. I replaced all four airbags and compressor and now the level 3 to level 4 LED blinks only 3 or 4 times and it's ready.
@julioigna71 Actually not period you uneducated putz! IN the AWD battle with Subaru and Audi there is no definitive answer on which one is better. So instead of making yourself look like an idiot... maybe post something that shows a little more brains next time.
@SubieSleeper You are right about Subaru AWD being good if not better. You are wrong on the money pit thing. Do you own an Audi? Ive owned 6 and not a single one has been a money pit. Or it could be, that compared to me your just poor, who knows. But regular maintenance and a fix here and there is the furthest from a money pit that i can think of. So either 1- your poor 2- you don't know how to maintain a car or 3- you've probably never even owned an Audi.
@SubieSleeper totally agree with you. i was getting stranded in my old 2.0T A4 quattro, not because of the weather, but because of breakdowns. multiple coil pack failures, fuel pump cam follower getting holed and eating the camshaft, cracked heater core dumping coolant everywhere, and the billion electrical gremlins... you memorize the roadside assist emergency number quickly, and then when the warranty is up you also learn the jekyll/hyde turnaround the audi service dept attitude can be.
@fabulousprofound Well you can have reliability and sore back on long trips and lots of noise or not so reliable and living room like comfort - you take your pick. I have both Subie and Audi.
@JacanaProductions my dealer has a fleet of A3/A4 service loaners, but because of the high demand they were never available unless you booked weeks in advance, which dosen't happen for me because i always come in with roadside assist on the back of a flatbed or dolly, so i always ended up in a ratty nissan versa from the enterprise rentacar down the street, who gets most of their business from my dealer... if you want back pain, try suffering in versa for weeks at a time >_<
@fabulousprofound All my friend here in CO have Subies - I've done 1000s of miles in Outbacks in CO. I'm the only one with an Audi. The secret is finding a good mechanic, knowing what is going to go on your Audi (A8=tranny) and figuring the money you saved by buying a used Audi vs Subie will be spent the Audi. Subies are nice just too damn noisy on the highway at speeds of 75 and above (2010 better). I'd like a Legacy GT or 3.6 but just too expensive right now the per 2010 ones looked like poo.
@JacanaProductions my dad is a longtime sube owner , so i guess i did grow up with the brand, but i used to be a diehard VAG follower and did not follow in his footsteps. mostly city driving means there is very little hwy use. the a4 was new, and tried to keep the faith because the warranty covered most of the problems, but once that ended (i did not buy extended coverage), they just did not care anymore. the fuel pump and heater core cost me nearly $5k to fix at an indie shop... i had enough.
@SubieSleeper audi parts are cheap. its the dealer that rips you off. I own an audi and have payed 4x less when buying a part online. Its all a scam. Because you have a 'luxary' car they want to charge you up the ass.
Also quattro is no joke. Audi was banned from rally in the 80's due to an 'unfair' advantage. This was due to many people dying as a result to catch up to the quattro cars at the time. The quattro system is very good :)
Subaru and Audi have different AWD systems depending on the car. I'll take a Sub with VTD (or better yet - DCCD) over anything. The rest are just on par with Audi.
@alernest lol plasticky Audi? ha ha ha. Plasticky is the perfect word to describe Subaru. German cars are the best, in a class of they're own. If you call a Subaru 'sublime' keep it for yourself. Being a fan of other cars than german ones is not a pride.
I live in Germany for almost 10 years, I own two BMW's and. yes, a Subaru. Are you American by any chance, and a scarcely educated one? I can't imagine who else would try to make this a national feud.
Here in Germany millions ADORE the Subarus, the best car mags (sport auto, D-Motor, GRIP, ams) RAVE on the Subarus. TüV und DEKRA (JD Power equivalents) have Suabru as reliability and consumer satisfaction leaders for decades.
TüV and DEKRA have been complaining over the last 10 years that the VW Group cars are CHEAPLY PRODUCED. They're FAR LESS RELIABLE than most German and Japanese cars. And sport mags have been complaining for like twenty years that Audis are no longer "quattros", THEY'RE VW, CONCEIVED AS FWD CARS, TO WHICH THEY ADD SAFETY-ONLY AWD SYSTEMS (not as previous Audis)
@alernest Audi's aren't cheaply produced. That's your opinion. They're very very reliable, and the quality is top notch. Also, normal luxury Audis are not sport cars, but they give enough satisfaction and feedback. It is normal that you atack Audi, cause you own a bmw(so it's natural) and also you own a subaru which is a awd-oriented car so it attends to Audi's Quattro(simply the best). 911 Turbo, boxer engine, but like no other car, the king of supercars.
@felix911turbo there's nothing wrong with subarus. The Imprezas - yes the interior is horrible, very plasticy and basic, but don't make the mistake of associating subaru with the impreza only. The legacy's are a higher class and much nicer to be in.
where's the subi? toy highlander AWD is like honda CRV it just sends a part of the power to rear wheels, which is not enough when needed, AUDI has a very good AWD system, some models have or had diff locks, but still SUBARU has a real good AWD which is very efficient,,plus the weigh distribution makes subis very capable.
As for the Audi Allroad combination of build quality, premium construction materials, ergonomic comfort, and performance, it is at the Top. All the others don't have the perfect sum of all those parts.
I have a 90 Audi V8 Quattro and its permanent awd i have yet to get stuck in even snow that deep i get right out and yeahall4 of my tires move the same no matter what i live i the rockys of colorado and snow that deep dosent really stop my car unless im in reverse with my yokohama street tires and the snow is as high as my trunk
i just have to say i have 1999 subaru all wheel drive rear lsd turbo legacy i never have gotten stuck i dont have a electronically control diff ... i have a cable throttle ... my car is lowered 3 inch leaven it 2inches off the ground ... we got 8inches of snow in pa .... i was tech stuck everytime i stopped due to i was pushing the snow but never actually stuck .... subaru awd ftw ... btw my friends evo 3inches off the ground didnt move
you guys are aware that the highlander also comes in front wheel drive variants, right?
this highlander is either front wheel drive, or if it's 4WD, then the driver did not switch it to 4WD using what ever button is in the car. Either way, both of these AWD/4WD systems suck. Subaru's AWD is superior to all of these, and the BMW xDrive is a close second to the Subaru AWD!
Its supposed to do that. It doesn't have true locker. Its limited slip diff . Thats Audi and Toyota for you. Subaru system is made so that both wheels would spin at same speed. Brakes are applied as needed. So if one wheel is spinning faster than the other, its slowed by brakes, until both move at same speed in these situations. Engine power is like electrical power. It follows the path of least resistance. If one wheel is on ice, the other on dry asphalt, the one on ice will get power.
toyotas awd is a fucking joke. they care more about having the most fuel efficient hybrids than there drive system.

@alernest A3 and TT yes, Halex AWD but the rest have quattro i.e. Halex.

All the others don't have the perfect sum of all those parts.

you guys are aware that the highlander also comes in front wheel drive variants, right?
this highlander is either front wheel drive, or if it's 4WD, then the driver did not switch it to 4WD using what ever button is in the car.
