Hi everyone! 61 here. Saw the southern cross on the way to australia in 1976 onboard the USS Enterprise. Have loved these guys since their original bands (Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and the Hollies. This song affects me the same way as it did when it was new. So powerful musically vocally and emotionally
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Noodle...Noodlen ?? Thats the part I can't seem to get when I feebly try to hack this beautiful, classic Stills ballad on my guitar :) The imagery and emotion this song evokes is timeless. Its also a great campfire song beside the ocean for the 50+ crowd.
Went to New Zealand several years ago with my wife to visit her sisters. One night I stood out the balcony and saw the Souther Cross. Such a beautiful sight and I was thinking of the song.
My 9 year old daughter asked me, "Daddy, what's this song about?". I thought about it and said, "it's a sailors love song".
Stephen Stills has a God given gift, the ability to say so much with so few words. He will go down in history as one of the great folk/rock song writers.
Wow, "still's" one of the top 5 greatest songs of all-time. Must be in David's dope shooting days...man that look makes me so thankful I was never introduced to Heroin as I'm sure if I did I'd most certainly be dead by now. Why can't anyone write songs like this anymore. It's really the 1st time read all the lyrics, i didn't know Stephen was that much of a sailor...

Never saw Nash so hyped. By comparison Crosby is calm. Interesting given the band history. Amazing song. Made me research the actual constellation which apparently guided early south pacific sailors.
You go Dallas Taylor (drummer)....great song for sure but Dallas is the bomb and deserves so much credit he never seemed to get. This song remains a favorite for sure! it's real music... certainly not like the shit my kids like!!!!! Yes, so very lucky to have this song, this group in our lifetime...so agree!!!!!
You go Dallas Taylor (drummer)....great song for sure but Dallas is the bomb and deserves so much credit he never seemed to get. This song remains a favorite for sure! it's real music...certainly not like the shit my kids like!!!!!
@peaceandllov LOL- Dude, stay off the acid! You have to be seriously tripping out to have concluded that these lyrics are about pulling a Silence Of The Lambs/Buffalo Bill on a girl.
Today's lyrics are so utterly shallow when compared to songs like this. These tunes used to take the listener on an adventure, but today the songs take you NOWHERE.
Who are the 4 morons who gave this a thumbs down? they should be executed without delay so they can not procreate . This is one of the greatest songs ever and done to perfection by Stills. Crosby is stoned but Stills is sober and Nash is having fun, Lyrics are perfect.
I thought I had met my woman-girl back in '91, trouble was, she was married. I took a job on a ship, hoping that the sea would help me forget her. When at the mercy of a storm at sea, you realize how small and insignificant your life is, but it also makes you want to live every day to its fullest. Love can be as fleeting as a summer squall. This song is a golden capsule of my quest for love and enlightenment. The sea did not disappoint...moved me in a different direction, and I am better for it.
amazing is all I can. How Stills can remember all the words is beyond me. ( and my love is an anchor tied to you , tied with a silver chain.) Silver chain to me represents redemption.. A lot of deep meaning in this song. That's why I love it so much.
In just a few stanzas, Stephen Stills takes us to both the Southern Ocean and the desperation of a failed relationship. Lyrically, this is unsurpassed imagery and an inspired voyage. The hope and rescue of music saves us from drowning, and somehow, we go on. Stills is masterful; Crosby and Nash provide the perfect accompaniment; you can taste the salt water of survival. The Muse smiles; we all benefit.
@jas60per Good observation there! I missed that. But that's part of the beauty of such a great song; there's always more to find with repeated listenings.
Love this song .... one of the greatest....says a lot about life not just sailing. Has anyone seen the original Music Video.... I only saw it once on MTV ( yes they use to play Music Video's) I would love to see it again if anyone can find it any place.
This may be anecdotal, but to an earlier posters comments about Graham Nash "acting like Mick Jagger", I respectfully disagree. I have friends who were on this road show and they tell me that it was Graham who attempted to infuse some enthusiasim and comradity into the band. Especially during a time David Crosby was present only in body..., I believe his energy and introduction of the song make for a great video... of course, that's just my opinion
@Mymontana5 fully agree, anyone who said horseshit about Nash "Upstaging" or whatever is bullshit. The guys a fucking class act who helped save Crosby's life. Plus its nice to see someone do something other than just stand there with a guitar and sing. A little showmanship never hurt anyone. That is in fact why we go to see live shows isn't it?
I live under the Southern Cross, thankfully, and I sail the seas whenever I can...with CSN playing over the kiss off the waves on the hull....life's great!
As a hippie and a sailor pushing sixty, this song touches me deeply. Younger generations don't be a bystander to your own life, it's a great gift, don't waste it.
@SuperKevinriley As am I the same my friend! I'm bald and don't even own my own teeth but this song brings me to a time...forgotten with such willful pleasure...brought back with an intense willful same...
@SuperKevinriley I'm a hippie (ish) and a sailor, (42) thanks for the advice. Stationed in Yuma, AZ, but half my career's been on ships, West Coast. Loved this song since it came out...didn't understand it until I was sailing and left my first wife, but, yes...don't let life pass you by, while you're making other plans (True Romance quote!).
@SuperKevinriley: Posted this comment a year ago. Now I am sixty. From my perspective, you are much more likely to regret what you didn't do than what you did. Graduated from UCLA last June, starting graduate school the end of this month.
@SuperKevinriley wow mate, i came across this, in time when I was doubting whether i should go to University at the age of 40. But what I read here is what I was thinking, It was a random thing, but then again, was it?

Don't know what your problem is. Crosby is one of the greatest harmony vocalists in the history of popular music. Also a great songwriter in his own right.
@markc1972 Yes he certainly once was a great singer. By 1980 though he was living on a past reputation. Stills and Nash have been carrying him now for 30 years. I do not dislike the man, nor am I trying to hurl mud here. Just my opinion of him. Take care.
@mdfuerter bullshit, Crosby was fucked in the late 70's to the mid-late 80's cause he was hittin' that crack pipe. My brother just saw CSN 2 days ago and said Crosby was in top form and actually him and Nash had to cover a little for Stills for whatever reason.
im normally a hip hop & reggae fan (and hawaiian) but damn ive loved this song growing up.. (im 23, so i loved it more for the sound) but NOW i realize that i just went thru a situation where i can directly relate to these lyrics.. i love it..
I have to say one thing this song is one of my favorites it is a work of art and I hope everyone gets to hear it at least once and thanks to the lyrics
My words of thanks to DiscoWitch for including the lyrics ... this song is one of my favorites, and I definitely find this live performance to be one of the best posted to YouTube ... thanks to all
Amazing, I was watching Dish Earth which is a satellite DISH Network sent 22 thousand miles into space to have a channel showing the Earth all day. The best use of television to date for me. Anyway they play musics from the 60 and 70's and I just learned of this song from it. It made me tear up seeing how beautiful the Earth is and to have a song that speaks to your soul is just overwhelming. Thank you!!
This song was a big help in my life. Tho the lyrics might not exactly be what I was thinking at the time, but it helped me get my mind right to say goodbye to my hateful wife. As I was painting the upstairs hallway I put this song on repeat the whole day. Singing along thinking to myself that it will be okay for me, in my after married life, to sail away; find somebody fine that will come along make me forget about loving her. Found her. Thanks guys! The new one is my Southern Cross.
@DrumlineFraternity When I was 25 years old I was working on a Danish freighter as it drove up the channel between Tahiti and Moorea at sunset. I thought about jumping off the bow and swimming for it. I didn't and after a year in Australia, two years traveling in Asia, seven years in Thailand and a career as family man and academic back in Canada, I am 67 years old and I will finally get to Moorea now, because of this song.
@DrumlineFraternity OMG are you okay? I can't imagine being in your place. All I can offer yiou is advice that I was given when I had an awful marriage and that was..be yourself, and find joy in that. I noticed that your post was a year ago and I hope that you have moved on and are happy now.
@DrumlineFraternity Saying bye to a hateful wife was a fun thing to do, but it was still remorseful to know that anyone could be so in the darkness. I feel nothing but pity for those who are trapped in their own bondage. As one who endured a toxic relationship, I will gladly take the freedom and play with good people.
Watching this videos is beyond words to me. I was born in 1979 but this song is a recent gem of a find to me. Finding this video posted on here is so AWESOME. Thank you! And thanks for the subtitles....now the song means even more now that I know what they are saying
Was a favorite song of my late uncle. My eyes well up and I get goose bumps when I hear it.

Thank you!!

Thanks for posting this GORGEOUS song -- def. the best from C, S & N!! Thanks too for the lyrics, cuz Steven doesn't always enunciate.
Here's a funny note: Graham's striped shirt looks like a that of a cliche' pirate! Funny!
