Papillon is indeed French for butterfly but the song is about trying to escape from something inescapable so the reference must be to the prisoner who escaped from Devil Island, the inescapable prison, as played by Steve McQueen in the film "Papillon"

Good remix, I think some of you missed the point of the remix and the sound that the original track was conveying...you want to keep some elements of the original track and then enhance it, like Depeche Mode would do with their remixes..
