my Grandfather is probably in this video....he was well known surfer in Redondo Beach back then hung out with owners of Dive N surf, and such....very cool
@tootonetommy My dad is 73 and grew up surfing here as well. Lived right on the beach. I wish he would have stayed there:) Moved up to rainy Oregon! His name is David Franklin. I will have to ask if he knew Wally. I remember him telling me about parking on that road and walking down to the beach as a teen.
@LWBillHughes haha. Well I don't know what year it was but I really do think it's the late '30's. I would think it was pre WWII or they probably wouldn't be wasting time filming surfing
No skegs on those boards, and the boards are probably 150 lbs each, too. No leash, no wetsuits...and they could drive their cars down what is now just a walking trail to the Cove.
I've been diving at PV since 1965. Amazing to see how undeveloped it was in the 40's. Man I wish I could transport back there. I bet the place was littered with abalone :)
This is an amazing video. Despite being incredibly sexist, it really is a time machine to the early 30's and the amazing surfing happening in that era.
Well dang it, i just don't know what year this was, I originally said 1939
