i saw a clip here the other day wherwe the contestant said the word at the end of the buzzer and still got the money. come to think of it i seem to remember this clip being mentioned in one of the comments
All in all, an entertaining and amusing clip and Bert handled that well. Whether or not you feel that Holly should have won, once the judges gave Bert the green light to make the decision, you pretty much knew he was going to say yes.
I would have let her play the round again at the start of the next show, and if she failed at that retry, I'd give her not just the $100 per word on that attempt, but the $900 on the first attempt, as well.
After the commercial break and before they rolled the tape for $20,000, Bert and the celebrities were talking about illegal clues at the end game. He went to Constance McCashin (from "Knots Landing") who gave 25 for quarter and then he went to Nathan Cook (from "Hotel") who gave Ice Cream for strawberry.
I thought the contestant had to guess all 10 words in 60 seconds. But the actual buzzer sound doesn't begin until about half a second after the clock runs out and then the buzz sound lasts about an additional second, so why do people seem to think the contestant should be allowed 61 and a half seconds?

After the commercial break, they were talking about the illegal clues at the end game. Bert Convy started with Constance McCashin (from "Knot's Landing) who gave 25 for Quarter; then Bert went to Nathan Cook (from "Hotel") who gave Ice Cream for Strawberry.
Of all the buzzer beaters on shows like password and pyramid that I have seen this was probably the clearest example of the contestant saying the word after the buzzer. It was nice of them to let Bert make the call though. I am sure he knew it as well but it was cool of him to still give it to her.
it was close but in my opinion too late buzzer sounded first and after it started she said inn.. Deifnitely too late and clock was at 00... fragile in my opinion was actually a little closer in the other clip but still too late...
Boy, you are one real fascist. People have a right to disagree with you, so get it over it.
As for this lady, she was late. A buzzer, in regards to a clock, means time has expired. The reason she got the money was because she complained so much. If she had been quiet, like the average contestant would, she would have gotten only $900.
That didn't happen in 1981. It's more like 20 years ago. Anyway, when this event occurred I was a kid. So you'll excuse me for not writing a letter to NBC.
You're right that nothing said here will change the result. We are just stating our takes on what occurred.
The last thing I'll on this is that the "judges" were cowards. Why have them if they won't make the tough calls. They were wrong to put Bert on the spot.

Normally, that would be the opposite. In The Jeopardy! Book, one of the guidelines for contestants are "Enthusiasm is welcomed; tantrums are not." This judgment violated the entire principle.

The judges told Bert to make the desicion. On Pyramid, Dick Clark explained that "the essence" has to start before the buzzer, not "close enough." However, Super Password didn't have a distinct buzzer rule. Therefore, my jury is still out on this horrible, horrible, decision.
When they threw it to Bert to judge, you know they're not worried about Standards & Practices. They couldn't have expected the genial host to rule against her.
Looks like the last part of that show, so end it with a winner. Yes, she was after the buzzer with inn. Good P/R on the shows part. Let her have the money. That's showbiz.

The answer to the title of this video is no because she actually won the $20,000.

Bert, you're full of crap. Those judges on Super Password need to grow some balls like the judges on Pyramid.

If the buzzer goes off while the celebrity said the clue, it shouldn't have counted. You can't make other people agree with you.

Looks like a tenth-of-a-second clock would help in this case. I say a buzzer and double zeroes mean she should have only won $900.

But...some buzzers are longer than others. In sports, basketball in particular, if the horn starts and the clock reads 00.0, the shot does not count.
