Needless to say, DK Country never posed a threat to the likes id Software, but Golden Eye did, and it was a matter of time until Sony produced their own cash cow.

This concept was the whole reason they got into console gaming. the Xbox is basically a trojan horse they've used to get consumers used to turning to a microsoft box for their netflix, for their cable tv, for their internet, for their gaming, etc. In other words, no piece of commercial media/data would flow without MS getting paid for it.
@the7thlevl I've heard a rumor about how Microsoft agreed to supply SEGA with WIndows CE because it enabled them to access the Dreamcast's architecture which would help serve as a blueprint for the DirectX box (though that would be somewhat contradictory to the story told by Seamus Blackley) Wouldn't surprise me though, as Microsoft pulled a similar stunt with Apple when they were given permission to code for the Macintosh.

He could then even send it to his smart phone and continue the game on it should he go over to a friends. There's your bright shiny gaming future.

No one knew what its future relevance or potential would be.The idea of home game consoles going away in preference to unified multifunction boxes only really got going as an idea in 1999 with the start of the previous gen systems internet functionality, starting with the Dreamcast.

While the potential was hinted at with teh Dreamcast, it was Microsoft who really started the whole "smart home" initiative to have TV, computing, and gaming all running out of one central source. So all your gaming, surfing, DVR, and so on would all be supplied by one unified cloud based device with one monthly access fee that gave you access to movies, games, internet, and storage.

@the7thlevl I've read up a bit on how Microsoft tried maneuving their way into the living room market with the Xbox as the catalyst, coupled with the fact that Sony's first gaming platform was enticing developers away PC developement. Until then the industry never really seen a console both technologically competitive AND successful. Needless to say, DK Country never posed a threat to the likes id Software, but Golden Eye did, and it was a matter of time until Sony produced their own cash cow.

This concept was the whole reason they got into console gaming. the Xbox is basically a trojan horse they've used to get consumers used to turning to a microsoft box for their netflix, for their cable tv, for their internet, for their gaming, etc. In other words, no piece of commercial media/data would flow without MS getting paid for it.

@the7thlevl I've heard a rumor about how Microsoft agreed to supply SEGA with WIndows CE because it enabled them to access the Dreamcast's architecture which would help serve as a blueprint for the DirectX box (though that would be somewhat contradictory to the story told by Seamus Blackley) Wouldn't surprise me though, as Microsoft pulled a similar stunt with Apple when they were given permission to code for the Macintosh.

No more nVidia nor ATI/AMD for mainstream markets because it will be done in the cloud and let's bring the SOPA thingy which may be a medium to make it faster. Personally I think PC is the safest. Tablets may take over Laptops but at the end of the day raw power is always going to be needed whether it be for business or military applications tech ethusiasts ect. PC's are essentially like cars and cars aren't going any where either.

@BLACKB0ND Unless access to data and storage of it becomes cloud based as well, then all you'd need is that magic set top box microsoft wants, and all games/services would be streamed at max settings, no more need of worrying about settings, compatibility, etc. but then again, they'd be able to control piracy, as no way to store anything locally... the pieces all start to fit when you sit down and really think about what they want.

@BLACKB0ND Yes but the GFX cards that go into those servers will not be mainstream cards. They will be build with specifications for the servers to run. The rendering will not be done with your 560's ti in SLI. There may not be a GTX 800 nor a Radeon 9000 series.

Kid goes upstairs, and has his own monitor thats connected via high sped wifi to the box downstairs. Click click, the game is transfered to that monitor, still paused and waiting for him. He could then even send it to his smart phone and continue the game on it should he go over to a friends. There's your bright shiny gaming future.

The DS outsold the PS2 according to vgchartz anyway. Monster Hunter Tri G sold nearly a million in Japan only with a 3DS install base of 4 million. Yeah..
