  • I came across Plato Unmasked while looking for good translations of the Plato dialogues. It reads more like an anti-Socratic book than anything. The dialogues can be long-winded but this is an oversimplification of them.

  • @riethc

Do you disagree with the actual translation of the text?

Or do you object to the historical context being included?

  • plato is the bedrock of western thought and almost every new idea is only a rehash of plato--who was a bridge of sorts in his own right.

imo plato should be standard reading throughout public education, especially in high school.

    thanks

  • This book would be useful for understanding Plato and the context from which his philosophy emerged.

  • are you wearing a mask or do you just enjoy going around scaring people, yikes!

  • Thank you for the tip - is there anyplace I can find information on this 'adjustment' of classical Greek history and evidence for it?

My only seculare referencw would be Martin Anstey in his "Romance of Bible Chronology" where he discovered an 82-year expansion of the Persian Period that has now been confirmed and corrected with astronomical texts. That reduction affects Greek history ultimately. It's been contested but never really corrected, until now. Cheers...

Not that I know of. It's still a well kept secret, only now you know it. It was a well-done vision but then seemed to serve other motives for later ages, particularly post-Christian. The Jews in 3rd century adapted Book of Esther to the revised timeline, so some Jewish scholars have not lost track of the original timeline.

  • The "Delian Problem" is a FUN example out of many that proves Xenophon adjusted Greek chronology by 57 years. Plato was consulted during the first year of this war to solve a match problem to stop a plague in 430 BCE. Plato was not born until 428 BCE. The folklore connected with this problem doesn't work with the current timeline, but when the PPW is corrected by eclipse to 403 BCE, Plato is 25 years old vs not being born. The sellout of Plato to the Persians needs to be part of this debate.

  • Interesting: But have you asked why Xenophon and Plato needed to translate Socrates in the first place? The reason why, is because Xenophon was a paid Persian propagandist who employed Plato and Aristotle to revise their histories, which included pushing the PPW and Socrates back in time by 28 years. All the writings of Socrates had to be EDITED if prserved. So only his dialogues were preserved. Fact is, Socrates and Aristotles were loves, Phaedo is Aristotle. Look up "The Delian Problem"...

The 'Delian Problem' seems to be a simple math puzzle...

  • Interesting math question. History says Plato didn't solve it but passed it on to Archytas and others who did. Sorry you missed the point though. The PPW began in 431 BCE when the plague broke out. Plato was born in 428 BCE, so the issue is that he wasn't born yet. Further, if this is considered a result of revisionism the War would have to be moved down in time to at least when Plato was 20. But the legend is presented as "historical" not "fantasy"? What do you make of it? Thanks.

  • Sounds really interesting. I just finished 'Reason-Driven Life", which I caught onto through your book reports. Also turned me onto POI with that book report, been listening ever since you posted it. Great stuff! thanks.
