Can't help but agree... When I started FFXI years ago, exploring Windurst while struggling with the controls and stuff, a paladin walked up to me and said "You seem lost, need some help?". In that game people played, talked, helped each other and generaly they were just great, wether they roleplayed or not.
I was so shocked when I tried AION... It's just grind and PK... grind and PK... If you try to talk to someone or (god forbid) dare to ask a question, you'll get "stfu U NooB"...
Eh, I don't know if I agree with that. 3.5 is a solid system, much more streamlined than 2nd Ed (holy crap did THACO suck). 4th ed is a shitty system, but I don't think that has as much bearing on role playing as you think (if the players were willing, 4th ed would actually be an awesome system for role playing because it doesn't allow you to fall back on rolls to settle character interaction). I don't even really blame the MMOs themselves, I place the blame firmly on the players.
I can attest to this man's comments. My group is roleplaying based, but we kind of grew out of looking at tables. In essence, the rules system is only necissary for simulation, and in fantasy roleplaying, you really only need to simulate combat. 4e has a streamlined combat system. it has other systems you can take or leave, we left them for the most part and free-formed it.
It's up to your dm/group how much grinding you do, not the system. We have sessions where we don't roll a die
For 3.5 or WoD, I haven't seen a problem. The easiest roleplaying hook I've seen is to have the characters engage in a standard horror-movie scenario.
With enough railroading, the players eventually realize "Hey, I can meteor a wall to escape. I have more power in this reality then I do in real life".

Well, WoTC killed Roleplaying. 3.5 is basically grinding and 4E is just like,"NO MORE ROLEPLAYING!!!"
