the reason some people call it Dr who is the KLF covered part 2 and mixed it with the Dr who theme and the sweets 'blockbuster' and called it 'docterin the the tardis'.KLF called themselves the timelords for this project..
and here's the KLFmix version version watch?v=bdTELokKfCk
@scotsmaninusa Lol I know the reason why they're calling it Doctor Who, hence why I didn't say anything bout the video being called Doctor Who, just agreeing with Neo, I'm an avid Doctor Who fan and I've seen the KLF version so many times its sad, on the other hand I did not realize there was a part 1! I took a History of Rock class and our teacher just said there wasn't a part 1, but thank you so much for showing me she and I were wrong, and for showing me part 1!
.....it's rock and roll part II.....always has been, always will be......the KLF tune is a very cool rip of it, but the song has always been known as "Rock and Roll part II". When I found this, I searched that plus Doctor Who because I could not remember the name of the KLF tune.....I did not search "Doctor Who song" or "The Hey Song"......"The Hey Song" is what most people call that Pixies tune, "Hey". So please.....let this settle the fight, please. The PoA band does a great job!
@dlmaston When I was in college in the late 80s I had a radio show on the school's radio station around this time a group parodied the song and sang "Doctor Who' instead of Rock and Roll. The name of the parody is "Doctoring the Tardis". When I google the song I will find the name of the group that did it.
@brucecap - Thanks for the attempt Bruce but my problem was the other way around. The band is KLF (for the track, they call themselves The Timelords). It was the name "Doctoring the Tardis" that I could not remember.
Everybody else.....this is settled. Period! Gary Glitter released "Rock and Roll part 2" in 1972. Doctoring the Tardis came out in 1988. Go look them up and see for yourselves.
@SirCliveCalculator Yah, I know it's not. If you google "gary glitter rock & roll doctor who" you'll find the connection. The song is typically called "Doctor Who" because it was based on a song that was about Doctor Who.
@Razela dude ive been watching doctor who for 30 years, i dont need to google anything, youre confused with a klf song using a sample from a gary glitter song
@SirCliveCalculator I'm not confusing anything. I KNOW that. But, the song is called "Doctor Who" even if it only has a tenuous relationship to the show. I didn't make that decision. I'm not the one who named the song!
@Razela It is called 'Rock and Roll Part 2' - this band isnt even playing the KLF song 'Doctorin the tardis' - all you need to do is change the title on your page.
@SirCliveCalculator Yes, I know. The official name is "Rock and Roll part 2." However, it is popularly known as either "Doctor Who" or "The Hey Song." It's stupid that it's known as that, but it is. In this particular version, the arranger put the name "Doctor Who" on it. Since he wrote it, he gets to name it. He named it "Doctor Who" whether or not you agree.
@SirCliveCalculator *sigh* No, actually. He named it consistent with practice. When the short form is used such as in this case it is always called either "The Hey Song" or "Doctor Who." When you apply for rights to the music, these are the names used. It actually is NEVER called "Rock & Roll Part 2" when used in its short marching band form.
@SirCliveCalculator Sigh. First of all, I am American, though I did live for a time in London. Also, I'm a huge Doctor Who fan. I even own an entire season with Tom Baker on DVD. I know my Doctor Who and I also understand that the song is only tangentially related. But like I said, it's the standard name for this bit of the song here and is also copyrighted under that name.
@Razela This song is not known as "doctor who" by anyone other than your arranger who decided to call it that for some bizzare reason. "The hey song" (while not it's official title) is more appropriate because it is the nickname for "rock n roll part 2". This song has no connection to doctor who, other than it was once featured in a medley that also included the Dr. Who theame!
Raz: you may want to watch the opening and closing credits of Doctor Who. The problem with playing this song at events is that Gary Glitter gets a royalty payment for every time it it is played, and I have a moral problem with that.
1) I totally watch the opening and closing credits of Doctor Who because it's only the best show ever and 2) He isn't getting any royalties from my youtube video, so you're free to click away
I have a problem with people like you that think "morals" should into this. The courts and law handle the morals, it's not to us to play the judge and the jury. If I stopped listening to music because I had a moral problem with the artist, or because I didn't like the person, then I'd stop listening to a whole lot of music. People just use Gary Glitter as a scapegoat, plenty of entertainers out their as bad as him, Ozzy Ozbourne and James Brown nearly killed people!
I've heard marching bands perform this before but they sing "Rock 'N Roll" rather than "Doctor Who."
Does your marching band know where the song comes from? Do they know the Timelords (i.e. KLF and Justified Ancients of MuMu) sampled a Gary Glitter song and the Doctor Who theme? Have they ever heard of the British science fiction series "Doctor Who?"
I totally bought myself the whole key to time set with Tom Baker for my birthday last month. I'm definitely a Doctor Who fan, but I just had no idea how this song was related to Doctor Who.
Not like they do in the UK. In the UK it is one of the all-time successful shows. It is largely unknown by most Americans, only a very small percentage watch it.
That's why I was so surprised that a middle American university (or is it High School, even more unlikely) marching band would perform a song named after a television show they've probably never heard of.
Lies... It's actually called Rock and Roll Part 2 for copyright reason... I think that bit might be little lie, but its rock and roll part 2, at least in Scotland it is
I had to do some serious research because everyone was complaining when I merely named it Doctor Who. "The Hey Song" is an unofficial name, but it originally comes from Gary Glitter.
It's interesting that whomever owns the sheet music to "Rock N Roll" is clearly trying to distance the music from Glitter by trying to sell it as a piece of music that extensively samples the original track.
Doctorin' The Tardis ripped, without permission, samples from The Doctor Who theme, and "Rock an Roll". This was in the early days of sampling when it was still controversial.
The Glitter Band still tour smaller venues, but they want nothing to do with Gary Glitter.
They may want nothing to do iwth Gary Glitter but they are forever stuck with him as long as they reamin in the music business. How many people would go to see them if they didn't sing his hit's. Most people don't go to hear "Angel Face".
Obviously people like the music (as witnessed here) and it is possible to seperate the music of Gary Glitter from his private life, but no matter what way you look at this, this song is NOTHING to do with Doctor Who! Infact it was NEVER EVER even used once in the TV show! The song here is Gary Glitters "Rock N Roll Part 2" and that's a solid fact!
Ok, RockingOn is probably most correct. I honestly just play the music and don't really know much about it's origins. In order to make it more correct I changed the title. I kept the doctor who part since that's what we call our version of the song in our band, but I added the Gary Glitter part to avoid confusion.
But it is NOT a song to do with the show. I supose you want to remember "Leader Of The Gang" as a motown classic and "I Love You Love Me Love" as a Presley hit.
It dosen't matter what you would prefer, the fact is this is a Gary Glitter song, no matter what way you look at it. If the sheet music calls it "Doctor Who" then it is the sheet music that is wrong. Like I said I see no point in me insisting the video owner change the title, but a better title would be "Rock N Roll" (the title it most known by in most of the world) or, indeed, "The Hey Song", as this is the title that it is best known in the USA.
Yes. That makes sence. I understand your point. Time to rename all the beatles hit's as "paul mccartney hits" as I prefer him to the other group members....
You're all wrong. This isn't KLF's song, it is Gary Glitter's song. The opening riff is the Glitter song, The first verse and the Chrous, it is ALL from Rock N Roll Part 2, it is not the KLF (they only used a sample of this song!).
Technically yes, that's most correct, though technically I guess it can be any of them. I'm still going to call it Doctor Who though since that's what we call it in the band and that's what it says on the top of the sheet music for it. Plus that's how most people seem to relate it.
Call it what you want , i'm not going to protest againts your choice of video name. However, KLF's "Doctor Who" song on samples Gary Glitters Rock N Roll 2. This is it in it's entirety, so therefore, the song is the Gary Glitter & Michael Leander compistion from 1972!
"Rock and Roll", also known as "The Hey Song," is a song performed by British glam rocker Gary Glitter that was released in 1972 as a single and on the album Glitter. Co-written by Glitter and Mike Leander, the song is in two parts: Part 1 is a vocal track reflecting on the history of the genre, and Part 2 is a mostly instrumental piece
OK, first of all, I admit that I’ve never actually seen Doctor Who, but it’s a good thing that wikipedia exists so I don’t seem quite so hopeless on the subject. Below is the excerpt.
"In 1988, the band The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu (later known as The KLF) released the single "Doctorin' the Tardis" under the name The Timelords. The song used samples from Doctor Who, Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll (Part 1)" (or possibly "Rock and Roll (Part 2)" — the sections used are not specific enough to tell), and Sweet's "Blockbuster", with lyrics chanting about the Doctor, the TARDIS, and Daleks."
So, you’re all correct, and I learned something. Also, according to the Doctor Who wikipedia page, you're not suppose to write it "Dr," so I'll change the title accordingly.
