  • This is the best reading of this poem on the internet.

  • Aww..why you nervous ?! It's amazing btw :) Keep the good work up !

  • I would like to upload this on my channel.

  • I love this poem too.

You have a really good voice and you read well but you rush the lines a little and you start to mumble a bit at the end. Next time relax a little and take your time. Good effort though, well done.

  • I have a suggestion-Invictus.

  • such a smooth delivery ;) you did that beautifully

  • You read this poem with a lot of emotions and that's why it's my favorite version. Thank you for reading this poem with depth, it is not easy.

  • Excellent job.

  • Thank You very much, I really enjoyed it.

  • this is really good - very well read. The music in the background really helped too x

  • Really lovely. Thank you.

  • Great job sweety !

  • I listend to this at school and for each stanza we had to decide the theme of it. This exact video to.

  • I love this poem to the point I have choose it as my personal philosophy, your reading is beatufil, thanks for sharing.

  • i luv ur accent i want an accent im american and theres no good accents here!

  • @nerdninjagrl Ehm, she has no accent... She speaks English.

Your an American as you say, the English you speak most likely has an accent.

  • I was thinking of making another video.

Any requests? See if I like them too.

  • I don't have the local accent so you'll never guess. =)

    NE England.

Thanks again for all the great comments everyone.

Sorry I never seem to get round to watching video responses.

  • Where are you from, i've heard this accent before but I can't work out what it is. I'm pretty sure it's from somewhere in the west of the UK.

  • i like yoour accent, this will really help for my schoolwork!(:

  • i lOve it...i'm gOnna present this in schOOl...wish me luck!!...wiew!! XD

  • My favorite poem too. You have done a very good job with limited resources.

Angel, maybe you should read it slower.

  • This great poem was given too me by my dad 1 year and 1 day before he died, alway's brings a tear too my eyes, love you dad "Alway's".

  • this poem is so great!but voice is awful so annoying!

  • ur voice is perfect for this, i dont think i've ever heard it read so beautifully XD

  • guys i need this lyrics .. can you put it here? tnx a lot!!

  • YOU WILL BE A MAN / A WOMAN MY SON /MY DAUGHTER !

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY UTUBE FATHERS !

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY JAMES AND SULLIVAN !

  • I love this version of the poem. I have to memorize it and I was lookin for recordings of it. This is the best I've heard. 5 stars!!!

  • Well done all around. Great poem, good music and the pictures are well chosen and placed. An excellent first try, Bravo.

  • Such a great performance! How can I get a copy?

  • Wonderful! Thanks!

  • Great reading, voice and video...congratulations!

  • very very good! really. this is my favourite poem and u did a good work. perfect music, images, voice. congratulations!

  • Your voice and the carefully chosen beautiful images are perfect for me. Thank you so much, i will listen to it often. Hilke

    Namasté,

  • thank u

  • Great job. I too must learn this and I appreciate all you did here. Have a blessed day

  • what is the name of the piano song in the background?

  • Bravo ! 5*

  • Very well read. Perhaps a touch fast, but that's not really a criticism. Some readings of this poem are too heavy and ponderous, so your interpretation was refreshingly different. The intonation and expression were perfect and, of course, the music harmonised well.

    Well done.

  • Always reminds me of my late dad and how often i have failed, but how much of a man he really was. rest in peace my mate.

  • ur really good.

    i have to memorize this...

    and its kinda hard! lol

  • My fav lines:

"If you can meet Triumph and Disaster,

And treat those two impostors just the same"

That is life's biggest lesson...when you succeed, the above lines don't make much sense, but when you encounter failure, that's when they make perfect sense...that's when you realise, Triumph can be an impostor too...

  • wow...

  • It's one of my favourite poems!! Thank you!

  • slow down just a little

  • What is the name of the song because I cAn't find it. And btw great reading very inspirational.

  • good job, but i would say slow down a lot more bc the listener can't absorb it all so quickly. but nice tone

  • Read it all in your mind and say it aloud, then try the same again from memory. I can hear it but can't feel it. A vivid presentation though.

  • Great reading. Hopefully for your next project you can get a better mic!

  • This was FANTASTIC!!!! Loved it!

  • wow, that was excellent! great voice and interpretation, it was just a little bit fast imo!

    very good job!

  • One of my favorite poems of all time and you're reading of it was excellent.

  • whats the music behind the piece, need it... going to do a dramatization of this with my students

  • Well done, nice voice, amazing images and music

  • very nice !! just a little bit fast !!!

  • Very cool! You have a great voice.

  • Kipling was a great poet.

  • Beautiful.

  • the emotion is amazing but slow it down a little!

  • Good effort i would say, suggestion if you like, just sow down the poem a touch no need to express any more emotion than what you did there, should you slow it down the emotion of the poem will come through,,well done.

  • Brilliant!!! Thank you so much for sharing this!

  • sowing season by brand new anybody?

  • this sounds way way way better than any of the other versions.

  • brilliant!

  • Beautiful:)

  • Your voice is great for this poem...

  • Mike bassett big fan;)

  • This needs to be slowed right down and delivered with more emotion.

  • excellent reading. love the voice!

  • Love this poem. And a truely brilliant reading this is. Pictures, music, and voice worked VERY well together.

  • You'll be a man my son...

    Awesome

  • спасибо

  • I really like that Poem.

  • This is done very well - you shouldn't be nervous at all. This is about the best on YouTube (only exception the one by the author - which itself is not this easy to follow at all) of this tremendous poem. Good job indeed; thank you!

  • @APB5 yes good job someone should turn this into a song.... i think it would make an awesome song with the chorus as the dream. think, disaster and triumph part as the chorus.... i may have to attempt that if it hasnt been done already

  • great piece of shit

  • This poem has always had the power to bring me to tears... but during your reading I could not hold them back. Your voice is young yet the spirit behind it determined. Very beautiful - I should think Kipling would be proud to hear you read his poem. Thank you for sharing.

  • This is absolutely the best reading of if--- on youtube, no doubt! There's something in your voice, fragile but yet brave. I've actually downloaded this on my mp3 and listen to it now and then :)

  • how do I download this? I would love to have a copy of this reading. Thank you.

  • google youtube to mp3 ;]

  • ty =D

  • So nice, thank you...my Favorite

  • Wonderful job, thank you.

  • ur voice is enchanting...

  • The sad thing is, I've only ever met one real man before In my entire life.

This is really nice though, thank you.

  • Imho it sounds tad wooden and overacted.

I think you've got a good voice and I think it would have been better read if you read it off by heart and with your natural tone.

  • Thank you for this wonderful video. Its my favorite on youtube. I just created an account so i could comment and thank you. Its gotten me through some pretty hard times so thanks again.

  • but you have an amazing voice for this!

and i work in broadcast journalism so i know. unfortunatly i am fully aware i am not blessed with the same ha

if you don't already, seriously look into doing some voiceover/radio work.

ur accent is ace and u have very good pace and tone.

    also, i love this poem.

  • Haha...thank you for the compliment, but my accent's not all that fancy over here, and I do actually tend to speak to fast.

  • Love it!!

It's the best reading on youtube

  • Best reading of this poem not just on youtube, but on the internet. I agree with MyNameGir, I've searched the internet for a good reading of this poem for my english project. And yours was by far the best.

  • i think yours is the best reading on youtube, also I love your accent!

  • lovely.

the voice, the music, and the poem itself of course all come together in a piece of beauty.

    well done ikonikangel.

  • I absolutely love it.

  • You did good IkonikAngel.

  • Heloo. What the name this song..? xD

  • Sorry I don't know I just found it on Youtube and played the video as I recorded the reading. (Look how high-tech I am! Woo~) It's in the Sevilla Version in the related videos. Try asking there.

  • It is called IF by the famous poet Rudyard Kipling. A man and legend.

  • The poem is, yes, but the music is not.

  • Заповедь (Перевод М. ЛОЗИНСКОГО)

    Владей собой среди толпы смятенной,

    Тебя клянущей за смятенье всех,

Верь сам в себя, наперекор вселенной,

    И маловерным отпусти их грех;

Пусть час не пробил, жди, не уставая,

    Пусть лгут лжецы, не снисходи до них;

  • beautifully read, the music is very well chosen. yours is one of the best readings on youtube. well done.

  • are you a man or a woman?

just out of curiosity. you sound like a woman to me but I could see you as being a guy.

  • Girl. Question's been asked before.

  • Your reading was beautiful and heartfelt. Thank you for it.

  • nice one mate.

  • when i first read this poem it gave me butterflies in my stomach

  • I think you did great.

  • Wonderful poem.

  • This is ok, check out watch?v=XcYf6myJZgY - now that is one hell of a poem by Kipling!!! Especially for this modern age of technological dominance.

  • One of the two poems I love most; a real life lesson by Mr Kipling. I first heard it when I was 17 and knoew neither who wrote it not its title... But I searched high and low to find it again. ***** for the sheer selection of poem. If you like this poem I suggest you listen to 'Ithaca' by C.P. Cavafy, (watch?v=1n3n2Ox4Yfk). You'll love that one too.

  • If is the most beautiful and meaningful poem ever....Well done IkonikAngel, i really like your voice and the way you read it....

My Boy Jack is a wonderful poem as well by Kipling...It would be great if you read others Kipling's poem....

    Cheers

  • Very good first reading although like others have said for this poem you really need to slow down. Every line of this poem is very true and meaningful and you need to give the listener a few seconds to take in the words and the meaning. Please take this constructively rather than as criticism

  • Your first try, and IT IS RUDYARD KIPLINGS IF??? Wow. Congratulations. A little too fast, I mean your reading, but very nice. I'm glad you like this poem. Please make shore you live by it's words. Not simple. Trust me.

  • perfect save for two points that have already been mentioned:

    the speed of the reading

    the business of the video.

    please remake!!!!!!

  • I think you did a beautiful job. I would love to hear you read more!!

  • Great performance, great poem!

  • Thanks . I listen to a few versions with my daughter to introduce her to IF, Yours got the thumbs up : )

  • Sorry, but don't bury the voice in background sounds. Having the text on the screen only masks the difficulty in the audio clarity. You have four things going on...the voice, the music, the background visuals, and then the text. Try just one.

  • i love this poem! this is far by my favorite.

  • whats the song in the background???

    a fantastic poem!!!!

  • ive actually watched a few videos of this, and this one is by far my favourite, well done xxx

  • Oh wow. I can't believe I clicked on this because I usually find that people's voices on YouTube make me cringe and I couldn't bear to hear my favourite poem mutilated. But anyway I'm so glad I did. This is epic. Beautifully read. I think you could afford to slow down a bit and leave some space and the ends of lines - I'm only saying this because I think you're really good and worth a bit of constructive criticism. I love your expression and intonation, especially with "Hold on!" Thanks.

  • Why thank you for the compliment. ^_^ If I ever decide to try again I'll keep your criticism in mind. However, I must admit that as a general rule I'm not a fan of poetry so I doubt I'll be doing this again.

  • OH! Sooo Beautiful...My fav. poem of all time! :D This is the poem that inspired me to keep writing poetry & never give up on my dreams. As Rudyard Kipling sd it Best: 'IF'!

  • 2 minutes of poetry, did me good!

    Great rendition!

    Thanks tuktuskagal for recommending!

  • i have always loved this poem;very well read;not easy to recite poetry;especially one so famous;you managed it with aplomb.the pictures were great;but it was your interpretation of this poem that i loved

  • nice job,you should be proud 5*****

  • well theres this one photo of like a little wooded area all green with a dirt path going down it at the bit where hes talking about 60 minutes of distance run, i know that from somewhere that picture i saw it when i was a bit younger but cant remember where from, please tell me what its from x

  • Again, just a Vista sample picture. Apparently it's "A forest path in Redwoods State Park, California." by Darrell Gulin.

  • the pictures may you give me the link to those picture pleasse

  • It's just the Windows Vista stock pictures. Bar one, I think.

  • Written for his son Jack, who was virtually blind and wore glasses but whom he pushed to fight in WW1, Jack died in less then an hour after his first battle.

Please do another for his poem - 'My Boy Jack'

  • Brilliant

  • The words in this poem are so strong. I'm not normally drawn to such things. I believe talk of filling the unforgiving minuite is about making the most of every moment in life. great recitation aswell, very pure.

  • Brilliant recital. My favourite poem and done so well :-)

  • what does it mean when it says if u can fill the unforgiving minute with 60 second's worth of distence run ?

  • If you can run for a minute non-stop I assume.

  • It's talking about making the most of every second...i.e. making every second count. It uses running as an analogy but isn't specifically talking about running.

This line is basically saying 'if you can do something (i.e. run) for a minute, and give it your all for every second of that minute.... 'fill the unforgiving minute with 60 seconds worth of distance run'.

The 'unforgiving' part I guess relates to the fact that time is ticking away against you.

  • no no - what does it mean when it says unforgiving minute... i just don't understand that sentence

  • It means that sometimes a minute can last an eternity, and that you must fight your hardest through every single one of those 60 seconds, no matter how long they last.

  • This poem is just brilliant!

  • I really can't believe I have so many comments. xD I'm not even a big fan of poetry, as a general rule...

MABKBDS, you have me wondering how you pronounce imposters now. I don't think it's so much dated as just that accent. It's closest to RP, which is the accent I always use when reading aloud (I don't quite speak like that usually).

    Glad I helped/entertained you all. <3

  • or even Gunga Din ,that was about a water carrier "your a better man than I am gunga din" !

  • I had to choose a version of "IF"to send to a friend Ikonicangel ... the robert morley one was nice as was the dennis hopper rendition ...... but I chose yours ! I had decided to do my own and now I have ... well done !

  • is it "Kim" tolindrome ?

  • it seems ur confidence comes slightly into the poem rather than straight away. way better than i cudv dun it though. ur accent and tone and pronunciation eg on "imposters" is the more dated way to say it, which adds so much more richness to this real poem.

  • great job although it cud have been slightly slower to reflect and understand (generally)although theres too many slow readings so i gess urs is different. actually i chose urs to listen to dis time cos it was shortest!

  • Well done:)

that was a superb read. Accent goes with it aswell. First time.. It sounds as if you've done it before. But all in all well Done:)

  • Well done

And if this is what you've done for the first time: you will be going places!

  • Psfht. No one supposed to advice someone in a cheery tone.

  • ehsy24, stop commenting. :)

  • Great job! Excellent poem and excellent effort!!!

  • It's a great compilation. I think it would have sounded better with some more intonation in your voice, like increasing the tempo as you go towards the end of the poem and finishing in a final crescendo.

  • Great!

  • You have a nice voice. Thank you for uploading this! Nice pictures too

  • OTCHIN KRA2SSIVAIA

  • Thanks for emotion you gave me

  • *happy sigh* Lovely! I really enjoyed this poem when I learned it for school, and this is a great rendition!

  • thanks. i have to learn this for school.

  • same here... this really helped

  • are you a boy or a girl, I don't mean to be rude

  • Very Good!

  • Thanks, i have to do an essay on this poem. Very helpful.

  • He does a good poem,I'll give him that. His cakes ain't bad either.

  • Nice voice, nice reading, nice images... nice work!

    Congratulations

  • This should help me Memorize this poem for School. Thanks! Amazing Video :)

  • I wonder, why no ballade has been written up till now. The song with this lyrics could make the best masterpiece of music. Well, I could work on so see my video pretty soon.

  • Excellent voice and background music...

    I lov' the vid!

  • Very well done

  • Nice reading! Best video about poem, congratulations.

  • Anyone who knows, or doesnt know much about Kipling's poems after the loss of his son during WW1, a good movie to watch the film adaptation of the play My Boy Jack, titled after the poem. It sheds light on much of Kipling's poetry post 1917

  • it was one of those films that made you really chilled in the spine to see such bravery, to see how rudyrd kipling took the death of his son was tragic whats more its more tragic the son became a man, but went on the same day. he was really just a boy.

  • excellent!!!!

  • my god a wonderful poem, if you can walk with crowds and not lose ur virtue if you can walk with kings and not lose your common touch. wow. i believe it was written for his son Jack, unfortunately in ww1 Jack met the end of his journey in front of the guns. it took months for them to find out.

  • Continued.

Im sure now Jack, Rudyard and his wife and daughter are sleeping well up resting well. its a really sad story if you get chance to watch my boy jack watch it, its a real insight into the man.

  • des lynam '98 world cup

  • This poem is on a plaque hanging on my den wall.

  • Really nice.

  • I love it

    the poem and your vid

  • Thanks for sharing just a nice work.

  • This is one of my favorite poem. I love this poem, ever makes me feels great.

  • Ive been looking for a R.Kipling story which I heard a long time ago. Its about an Indian boy who puts to buckets of water on his back (across his shoulders) and has to walk up a hill to bring the water to its destination, but one bucket has holes in it and the other is perfect and sturdy, the good bucket mocks the rickety one, but in the end flowers grew on the side of the path where the rickety bucket was losing water..

Does anyone know this story? Please let me know what it is.

    Thanks!
