it's easy for you to say that a small tribe of bushpeople or whatever should preserve their language, but why should they if they don't want to? why should they be forced to speak a language that no one else can understand, holds them back economically and separates them from the rest of the community at large?

Many people have lost their native languages because of the demand of having the main language spoken only. Why should they have to give in to the majority? its their culture and language.

My tribe researched about with this company. They don't give us the master copy of the audio files. To me they are just collecting these languages so in the future when our languages die they can sell it. I would advise all tribes to think carefully before working with them.

Yes. You're right. They charge $200,000 for the first level, come in and record with our last fluent native speakers, then give us 1000 copies of CDs then if we need more we have to pay $200 plus to get an extra copy. In other words, they are trying to sell our language back to us. Beware of this company!

all languages have common origin 10s of thousands years ago.all this variety(700 languages)is actually the product of linguistic evolution in seperate cultures and circumstances.

each one of those 7000 languages is a gem a recorded but undecodeable history of those cultures.

and loss of any of those languages is a great loss indeed.

Some languages are endangered in the West too, like, by example Occitan, Breton or Sami.

It is similar than the problematics of animal and vegetal biodiversity.

My parents and my wife are issued from a lot of linguistics minorities, I am a Frenchman, but I am a Gascon, with relatives in the Middle-East (aramaic, and overseas(creole speaking islands)... every language is a treasure, every dialect is a chance...to learn more languages and discover respectfully new cultures little or big.

because the West is considered "evolved", meaning we dont shit in the woods anymore. They just say cultural but its also social and economical and medicinal, things like that. I live near some very old people born in rural Western India and you really get to see how much we have evolved compared to them. It's not a god or bad thing. It just is what it is.

Actually a lot of people in the West still do shit in the woods. That isn't an east-west thing. It is a rural-urban thing. If people have money to spend on sanitation, medicine, education, etc., then that is what they will spend it on, regardless of whether they belong to a Western culture or not.

The only argument I can think of against letting languages die is that different modes of thought would be lost, as the speaker mentioned. Our cognition is necessarily restricted by our language, and it's best to keep that in mind. But I don't see these as problems that archiving can't solve. I don't by " preserving cultural diversity". What is the benefit of impeding cultural evolution?

Archiving is nowhere near the same as keeping a language alive. The Hawaiian language has different names for what in the west were considered the same species of fish. Only recently has it been discovered that these fish are DIFFERENT. Without a LIVING Hawaiian language we may never have known...
