i love this. thank you so much for posting this. the clara ward singers was the best girl group ever. not just in gospel period. i will most definitely keep- checking out ya page more often. shes sounds great. shes singing to my soul. and when u see her tell her this 17 year old loves her music. truly a blessing.
The Lady just gets right down to the nitty gritty of a note, if you will! I also love her dark beauty...there is something familiar, yet refined and detached there. You are one lucky guy to have had the chance to meet all of these living keys to gospel music history, and really American music history. Or perhaps I should say simply Blessed :)
LOL! Thank you very much! Mildred is my heart! I talk to her frequently and she's just amazed to know that there are so many young people who have taken an interest in the traditional Gospel. Believe me when I say that I'm going to read to her your comment, as well as some of the others on this page.
Its nice to know that one of the remaining ward singer is still with us. Please tell mildred for me theres a young fan from London England and if she is still singing to continue for Jesus her work down here is not over.
Marion Williams (as a soloist) was more popular than the group that she helped to found, the Stars of Faith. As a whole group, the Stars of Faith were more popular in Europe than in the US, but in general, they were not as popular as Clara Ward.
If you ever have the opportunity, look for the book titled HOW I GOT OVER, which was written by Clara Ward's sisters, Willa Ward. It's the story of the Clara Ward & the Famous Ward Singers.
Yes, it's the Clara Ward Singers. Mildred was one of the sopranos....and this was a medley (one of the few) that they did in this 1959 concert. And yes, Clara, is on the piano...and you can hear her in the background cheering Mildred on...."Well, go'head"...."Go'head Mildred; Goo'head, Gooo'head"
these were the replacements gertrude and clara put together after marion, kitty, frances, flew the coop, the ward singers never enjoyed that kind of popularity again. the 2nd set were good, but they could not touch marion with her doo wops and hoops and hollering, but they were entertaining nonetheless.
True, but they still remained popular. Marion and the others were more affiliated with the church and after they left, The Ward Singers did lose most of their church followers. While it may have been unfortunate for some people (within the church), it drew the attention of other types of audiences. More as show-women, they still ministered. Some of the stories I've heard... LOL!
when that happened around 1958 or 59, sad to say, the best era of gospel was drawing to a close, this is when clara and gertrude went into las vegas and other venues previous off limits to gospel singers,We true gospel lovers kinda of looked on this with some trepidations, but they forged ahead and got a new audience. the davis sisters had seen their best days, sam cooke had left gospel, and the caravans had all flown the coop too. mama van is fine!

Basicly they split over money bc the Ward family member would take alot of the money and leave the other singers with little or nothing.

If you want original albums, your best bet is to look around on eBay.
