The depth he creates with an almost independence of each hand is amazing. There is a wondrous luminosity here I haven't heard in any other interpretation.
@gedugat It sounds more like a Pleyel which Chopin loved because of its light touch, permitting a fine pianissimo The pedal in the Pleyel Chopin played did not sustain as long as a modern pedal does and the piano's tone was sweeter. He did double pedal according to his students
Cortot recorded on Pleyel (Naxos, Preludes) and on Steinway. To me this recording sounds Steinway but not sure. A agree, there is a difference in sound between the modern Steinway and the pre-second word war ones.
Ah, my favorite Chopin Nocturne finally realize as I have imagined it played and better; surely Cortot is the closesy thing we have to Chopin's own playing, as good as Rosenthal is. Cortot plays as if he is composing the piece on the spot; such wondrous colors, rubati, tone, phrasing, forward motion, and above all atmosphere. My favorite pianist of all!
I think Chopin would have loved Cortot...I have never heard Cortot play the same piece the same way twice...which as I have read in the reviews of Chopin's intimate and rare concerts...
If the great Friedman recording gives a "monochrome" impression, as it does to me, Cortot's is a wonderful patch of colors. Both are equally sensuous in nature. This instantly became a favorite.
Thank you Beckmesser2-san. Actually, I searched for this recording after you suggested it but could not find it anywhere. This recording truly is as you say!
Did he have a 3rd hand we can't see? The melody lines in the right hand converse so beautifully! He speaks eloquently even if some of the notes weren't Chopin's intention! Encouraging and inspiring.
Perhaps Chopin's most sumptuously beautiful Nocturne. Interesting to compare it with Friedman's...both are gorgeous performances--I think in Cortot's hands it has more a feeling of spontaneity, of almost an improvisation
Lento?....
great performance though

The most beautiful interpretation I have ever heard of any of the nocturnes. A new dimension entirely.

If Cortot didn't have to use his fingers to play this piece, I suspect the result would take your breath away.
