  • Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after you had believed. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others amongst you because they were Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.).

  • Dear Salman you are more than welcome to kiss my ass!

  • Too much waiting for Dr. Gould! Seriously thanks for putting on one of the most misunderstood, misquoted evolutionary biologists out there.

  • Lol really. I am willing to bet 20 bucks that you have never read any of his books. Way to make a judgment on nose length though. I assume Osama Bin Laden and Jimmy Durante are equally as damned?

  • Gould was a genius!

  • "Islam makes me sick" - Me on Islam

  • People used to talk like this some 300 years ago if not more. Wake up you are in 21st century.

  • Then go strap a bomb and blow yourself up.

  • thxs 4 the advise

  • why?

  • charlie seems skinny here... salman is great as usual. the modern-day galileo.

  • What's with the idea of "wild pigs eating Rushdie" (huzzymozz1, below)? I really don't understand the obsession in Middle Eastern religions with people being slaughtered like lambs or being eaten by pigs. Why does the call for murder by Middle Eastern religous people always have to involve these certain animals? Why not say, "I hope this man is torn from limb to limb in a battle between a pack of rabid hyena and flock of starving vultures."

  • things he is saying here are rational and

make sense so what's up with people

    criticizing him ?????????????????????

  • freakin weirdos. unbelievable. I'd be willing to bet there aren't too many haters here who have even read the books. and those who may have read them, haven't understood their point.

  • Excuse me?

"hope and pray he dies the worst of all i hope wild pigs eat him and piss on him and still doesn't die and animals eat of him. ameen"

    Oh, so you hope that?

Who is it here that is satanic? Because the things you are wishing upon him does NOT come from the holy spirit, it comes from a place of BLIND HATE and IGNORANCE of who we really are.

You're the satanic one here, my friend. But unlike you, I don't wish Death and Torture upon you because of it, my wish is for you to heal.

  • Ah yes, a true Muslim. Love the colours of hatred. At least you're an honest one.

  • I can't believe the British gov. knighted this buffoon. Brits are such idiots. They'll knight any charlatan that comes around. Funny thing is that he himself has cursed Britain, and currently lives in the U.S.

  • yshah7 how is he a buffoon?

what exactly makes you the know all

imean what exactly do you know that makes you above him and everyone else

your stuck up your own ass you stupid fuck

THIS MAN HAS BALLS AND I HOPE HE STICKS THEM IN YE MOUTH

  • you will came into know when he will die cos his death will be so worsen dat all of world will dare to do like him ,, he will leave a moral for de non belivers

  • ummm.... what the hell?

  • he is dead, dumbass

  • Lol wut?

  • Just got Dinosaur in a Haystack in the mail today; I'll be reading it shortly! :)

  • salman is my dog what a foolish routhless people i dont know whydoes is related to cows ohh it is forbbiden to eat what a brain

  • Salman Rushdie is the BEST!!! Read Midnight's Children.

  • Also read/listen to the great Sam Harris, Chistopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, Johnathan Miller, Pascal Boyer, Thomas Jefferson, Adam Smith, Baruch Spinoza. At least when it comes to the dangers of religion.

  • read them all my friend except Boyer and Miller. But the Rushdie is something else. Forget all the politics and fatwas etc. He is a superb writer, a fantastic story teller. Thank Allah for rushdie.

  • Miller is wonderful! Allah doesn't exist so I can't very well thank him, can I?

  • Cancel that, I meant Harris (Sam), not Miller.

  • Comment removed

  • no way. He is fantastic!

  • Allow me to disagree with you vigorously. please respect the feelings of 1.5 billion human beings who believe that Muhammad is the greatest of God's creation.

  • Yet your holy book can call others evil and your people are beyond reproach. Grow up, not everyone has to tip-toe around Islam or any faith

  • Who has to tip-toe or walk on eggshells in regards to people's faith? You don't HAVE to do anything.

Secularists (not atheists) out-number the vast majority of faiths. Why are we vilified and put up with it? It's idiotic and pointless. I liken it to men as a general rule putting up with the steady 'censorship' of our masculinity. There may be more females than males overall, but it doesn't conclude that what they say goes.

  • I don't have to respect the feelings of anybody. And your fallacious argument that 1.5 billion people who all believe in the same concept makes that 'true' or a 'fact' is disturbing to say the least.

Interestingly, have you considered that 4.5 billion people do NOT believe that Muhammad is the greatest of God's creation? Why do the rest of us suddenly cease to matter?

  • fuck you

  • Gould contributed to every single Natural History magazine monthly publication, since 1974!?. insaaannnne

his articles were sometimes, or mostly, overly intellectually recondite but he was a great thinker.

Dawkins is more concise in my opinion but losing Gould was a huge loss for America.

  • Gould was fucking brilliant!

  • amen

  • Postscript:

Mr. Rose could have also asked Rushdie,

where he found the character of Kaka -

(the sutradhar) in his ramani short story of

    the book East meets West?

How about him making his dad who maybe loved him a rickshaw puller.

    SHAME!

(what are his influences ... an unknown Hashmat also?)

  • salman rushdie is a man I admire in many ways!

  • the earth is 4.57 billion years old, 3.85 billion years of which life has existed. man was once monkey, u creationist fools

  • man was never a monkey. man evolved from a monkey. if you say man was once a monkey, you might as well say man was once a shrew/ mouse, a unicellular creature etc.

  • yes he was. and youre right, man was once a shrewlike creature.

  • its wrong to say that the human species was always present on earth. those animals were not human. humans simply evolved from them.

  • Man evolved from a common ancestor with the chimpanzee, not from the monkey.

  • also with the monkey.

but to get to the common ancestor with the monkey we must get more back in time...

but I think your point was to make difference between the monkey and the ape.

  • So you believe he'll burn in hell forever. Isn't that enough for you religious lunatics without him getting a fatwah as well?

  • the stupidest human in earth ugly

  • I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you're saying. Why don't you learn several languages, write some novels of international praise, win some awards, earn a knighthood and then try saying it again.

  • why dont u say that again once you read all his books?!

  • I have no quarrel with you, prehisplanet, this is not your fight! My comment was in response to rafikhydra's statement that Mr. Rushdie was the stupidest and ugliest man on earth. I merely saught to question the former of these statements. I don't think anyone can deny he's an intelligent man, whether they've read all his books or not.

  • im talking about stephen jay gould. in my opinion, he is the best paleontologist ever.

  • fucking funny dude

  • One of the greatest books ever written. I read this book in Cochin enroute to Bombay. How great was that !

  • Thanks for posting.

Stephen Jay Gould is a treasure..... his theories on evolution are truly missed, as are his write-ups on baseball.

    Great guy.

  • dumb dickhead

  • ..funny how some people think they know what happens after you die. One thing you should know, NO ONE knows what happens after you die...that is the ONLY thing we know for sure, is that NO ONE knows. Anyone ever came back from death to tell anyone else what it is really like? NO...Anyone that tries to tell you they know better have some damn good evidence...otherwise you're wasting your time worshiping concepts without any proof.

  • Dear HimmuraTube, Allah tells you what happens to you when you die.... Read the holy Quran my freind, just for your own knowledge.

  • Actually, I have read a lot of the Quran (and the Bible). I've read enough of them to think they're most likely the words of the people who wrote them as opposed to the "actual" words from a "God". There isn't anything in those books that couldn't be written by people at the time with their limited knowledge of the world.

  • read again water cycle, creation of earth,of univerce, all these thing who can mention 1400 years ago, think, also mention in quran there is life beside earth,if science dosent reached that far dosent mean its wrong they may be find out after100 year like other things discoverd recently mentiond in quran 1400 years ago, like big bang theory, purity of quran is there coz not a single word is change since it was reveald but every year you can get a new bible.and trust me you hvae read a lot.

  • after death day of judgement prof is that so many people do wrong things like robery murder rapes and get away with punishment from this world, what logic you can give all these bad things are bad,on the day of judgement they will surly punished is that make sence to you,we dont know any thing sure about life after death science dosent reached that far to prove, even mention in bible if you belive in it,if not,by useing simlpe logic you will be convinced,if not write me back i make you belive.

  • "what logic you can give all these bad things are bad,.."

-well..the golden rule like that of "do unto others what you would like others do unto you" have been around long before the bible or the quran. Evolution has brought us into the point of realizing that is the best way for our community (from small tribes to us as a species) to survive. You really don't need a God to tell you whats right and whats wrong.

"..we dont know any thing sure about life after death.."

    -umm..yep i agree )

  • ask any person you belive is knowledgable will tell you these are bad thing, with logic if some one kill some one mother in front of him what you think he gona say ok fine dont wory just go away, its natural you not gona like that,if not so you are agree with killing of inocent people, like you have rapes in america thousands, millions other crime, find a single knowldgable man can say this is not bad, only then you can say my logic is wrong, basicly my logic is not going down your throught.

  • life afterdeath not surly we know its right or wrong butt his this is a belive mentiond in christianaty and islam, also provid you with logical explanation,if you or few dont belive in it dosent make any difference, its up to you,i cant totally make you belive ,its your point of view.

  • "what logic you can give all these bad things are bad,.."

  • coming to the last part about right and wrong, even a engeenier when makes small piece of machine he provide a cataloge whith it,do you think ther is no rules for human, who has most complex system on earth,if you belive we are made by any supper power then surly there is something which is good or bad for us,if we live like animals then surly there will be no peace on earth, which we all looking for,we cant live like animals, coz we have brain for somre reason.this golden rule is for animal not man

  • "what logic you can give all these bad things are bad,.."

  • aaaaaaaaaaaa

  • gould speaks like he writes! R.I.P

  • fiftyfive minutes of shame and blasmphemy! praise allah! alhamduellah!

  • You didn't even watch the video. Stephen Gould is the closest thing to a creationist among evolutionary biologist.

  • Gould is a genious...He is so misnderstood as being a creationist..please explain your position?

  • I didn't say he was a creationist. Many people who purport to be knowledgeable of the Evolutionist-Creationist debate refuse to admit any other category. Gould leaned toward some sort of evolution, but he also pinpointed serious, and IGNORED, I think purposefully, inconsistencies in evolutionary theory. Namely, the fact that fossil records does not agree with the gradualism of nature, which is the most essential "tenet" of evolutionism.

  • Who said that gradualism is the "tenet" of evolution? What about the Cambian explosion This was far from gradual. Even more importantly, "gradualism" infers that evolution has some directionality to it..where is nature gradually going to?

  • Alexcolin68, of course gradualism is the tenet of evolution. I'm not quite sure how much you know about this.

I'm assuming you're referring to the "Cambrian" explosion. I'm not quite sure you understand the implications of the Cambrian. It is an argument AGAINST evolution, given that it seems to contradict the gradualism tenet of which I was speaking. And "gradualism" doesn't AT ALL imply directionality. Sorry to say this, but I think you have the facts reversed on all three of your points.

  • Thank you for your time

  • You're very welcome.

  • A tenet is.. "any opinion, principle, dogma, or doctrine which a person or group believes or maintains" Under this definition, of course, Punctuated Equilibrium is also a tenet of evolution

  • Not is not. "Punctuated equilibrium" is an anomaly to gradualism, and hence it is what is currently trying to be explained.

  • The outcome of whether puctuated equilibrium or gradualism drives changes in species is a wonderful puzzle to be solved but it will never change the fact that evolution occured..which I know is obvious to you but to creationists any debate about any facet of evololution is there proof that volution itself is false

  • Wow I can't spell either :) Science wouldn't be Science without change..old views being replaced by new ones. Have you seen the "connections" series?

  • Alexcolin68, you shouldn't create a false dichotomy. There aren't only two positions: evolution and creationism. There are many more. There are many holes in evolutionary theory, namely that fossil records do not agree with the GRADUALISM (not punctuated equilibrium) that evolutionary theory assumes. I certainly think you'd be very mistaken to think this is a black-white debate, as your comment seems to suggest.

  • I am not claiming that there are only two positions..actually I do not even have a position to defend. My whole point in posting a comment was to communicate my respect for Stephen Jay Gould and his passion for Science and epistamology. Please take care and have a wonder filled day :)

  • Well it's good to know you accept that there's more than one respectable position on this. I also enjoy reading Gould, so I can relate with your feeling. Thanks, best wishes to you too! :)

  • There are some very interesting computer models of evolution (some available on YouTube) that show how quickly great changes can be made. Just adds another notch to the belt of the punctuated equilibrium theory.

    Oh, and Gould rocks. :-D

  • The cambrian explosion happened over the course of 50,000,000 years.

  • Do you know what it means to be a Satanist?

  • to use a book which you deny as being false as the only basis for your own beliefs?

  • Did he stare down the moula or did they scalp him and send him on his way

  • I'm so glad to see a video of my favorite man, Stephen Gould. He is right on when he said the biggest misconception is that every one thinks evolution is having to do with progress.

  • AMEN!!!! The idea that the history of humanity, or life itself, is a linear progression from simplicity to complexity is so erroneously rampant in our culture..Goulds "A wonderful life" destroys this idea

  • Yes, "Wonderful Life", "Full House", and "Mismeasure of Man", are three of my favorite books of anybody.

  • Best Rushdie interview ever. Most definitive capturing of Rushdie's personality before he turned Bollywoody cool, as he is now, still rocks though

  • One of the best Rushdie Interviews. It is most definitive capturing of Rushdie's personality on TV; years before he turned-to some extent- Bollywoody cool. The second guy was good too

  • Steve Gould. I can not believe I found him on YouTube...thank you so very much for this experience. Hearing Gould speak again meant a great deal to me. I have been a fan for years...

  • Hello, I ABSOLUTELY ADORE Stephen Jay Gould. I was so lucky to have last seen him on the Carl Sagan festival at Cal Tech. I LOVE LOVE LOVE S J GOULD!!! ANyway, I just wanted to say hi to another fan.

  • Thanks for taking time to comment. Nice to know that others are still paying attention to Gould. A colleague once told me that Gould would be the guy at the cocktail party who would know more about what you do than you know, regardless of what you do...what a mind.

  • Yes an extraordinary mind! At the Cal Tech lecture, I found myself scooting closer and closer to the edge of my seat to lean towards his "aura" - I was so captivated by his presence.
