Research whaling is necessary to control whales as a resource. The population growth, abnormal climate, etc. may cause the food shortage in the future. The whales can be important food.

I think Sea Shepherd is doing an amazing job fighting for the lifes of the whales! We need the whales. They control the ocean, and if they die out, in the end we will also die out! Paul Watson has been convicted a couple of times but not the whole Sea Shepherd group nor has he been convicted as a part of Sea Shepherd. Sea Shepherds in Canada have been convicted but the organization didn't face criminal charges and SSCS maintians a tax-exempt status so they can't be considered criminals.

You have never been to the Faroe islands, they are quite small and rocky, with very little land for farming, and what land they do have cannot always be used just for farming purposes. They do raise some sheep and cattle there, but they must rely heavily on imports of food stuffs and like with anywhere else, imported goods come with a higher price tag. This is another reason why they hunt pilot whales, it provides FREE meat for the population

@info145 lol no, actually it was the Japanese who "lied" and I agree, they should never have claimed it was for scientific purposes. However, they did adhere to IWC limits on what they could take, and their main focus was on the Minke whale which is not an endangered species and is also a healthier choice since they do not seem to intake much mercury into their systems.
@info145 are thriving. Only a few River species of Dolphins are endangered. The ones at sea are doing so well that they are now helping to wipe out fish populations. This is why while I totally agree that we need to protect wildlife, I still do not see an issue with "Controlled" hunting of Whales or Dolphins as a food source for those people who want to eat them. Minke Whales are in huge numbers, they also number, like the Pilot Whale 1 million living in the sea....
@info145 Minke whales, did not get much attention from whalers back in the heyday of whaling because they are smaller, and did not yeild the oil of other whales. They gained international exposure when the Japanese, Iceland, and Norwegians began hunting them as a food source. Most of the whales the Japanese went after in the antarctic were Minke whales, and they still had a strict quota put on how many could be taken. Norway prizes them because they do not have high levels of Mercury.

The Japanese doesn't realize the consequence of killing those whales, removing them from the ocean can easily cause its prey population to rise drastically, and that in turn cause other problems. You have never been to the Faroe islands, they are quite small and rocky, with very little land for farming, and what land they do have cannot always be used just for farming purposes. They do raise some sheep and cattle there, but they must rely heavily on imports of food stuffs and like with anywhere else, imported goods come with a higher price tag. This is another reason why they hunt pilot whales, it provides FREE meat for the population

And a big issue is that we are going too far in the opposite direction from where we were with Whale hunting in the 1700-1900's which can be just as bad, take seals, along our coasts we have allowed them to become way overpopulated to the point that THEY threaten the ecosystem and extinction of some species. There has to be a balance, and Man was designed as a carnivore, plain and simple, the other problem is overpopulation....

@info145 lol no, actually it was the Japanese who "lied" and I agree, they should never have claimed it was for scientific purposes. However, they did adhere to IWC limits on what they could take, and their main focus was on the Minke whale which is not an endangered species and is also a healthier choice since they do not seem to intake much mercury into their systems.

@info145 are thriving. Only a few River species of Dolphins are endangered. The ones at sea are doing so well that they are now helping to wipe out fish populations. This is why while I totally agree that we need to protect wildlife, I still do not see an issue with "Controlled" hunting of Whales or Dolphins as a food source for those people who want to eat them. Minke Whales are in huge numbers, they also number, like the Pilot Whale 1 million living in the sea....

@info145 Minke whales, did not get much attention from whalers back in the heyday of whaling because they are smaller, and did not yeild the oil of other whales. They gained international exposure when the Japanese, Iceland, and Norwegians began hunting them as a food source. Most of the whales the Japanese went after in the antarctic were Minke whales, and they still had a strict quota put on how many could be taken. Norway prizes them because they do not have high levels of Mercury.
