My wife and I just were in Pennan in July 2011 and stayed with our friends who are starting the Mill of Nethermill with three self-catering cottages. Wonderfully beautiful area.
As to the YouTube, I kept clicking CC to take the Closed Captioning away, as the CC is way off in timing and distracts from this interesting video.
This is definitely one of my favourite all time movies, Mark Knopfler wrote a majority of the music for the soundtrack, including the main theme 'Going Home' and Alan Clarke who was Dire Straits keyboard player until the band broke up, wrote some tunes for the soundtrack as well. The sound track was written around the same time as the Dire Straits album 'Love over Gold' which was a huge success for the band, followed by the live album 'Alchemy' which included a live performance of Going Home.
What a great story. Local Hero will always be on my all-time Top 10 list. If I ever make it to Scotland, Pennan is the destination after Aberdeen or Glasgow airports.
Thanks to everybody at Culture Show for doing this. The first time I've seen the director, Bill Forsyth. What a gentleman. If I had the chance to make either a big-budget Hollywood movie or something like Local Hero, I would make this movie right here. It's perfect and beautiful, and it will never age.
What a brilliant tribute to one of the best films ever made. Thank you so much for posting this. I absolutely adore this story, and it is one of my all-time favorites. Every bit as pertinent now as it was back in the 80s, if not more so.... Bravo!!!!
"Local Hero" is my favorite film of all time. I'm American, but my wife and I wanted to spend our honeymoon in Scotland (I proposed to her a few years earlier on the shores of Loch Ness), and we made it a point to visit Pennan while we were there.
It was wonderful to see everything we had seen in the film, and just to BE on that narrow strip of a town wedged between the cliffs and the sea.
Wow-I am so envious! How cool it owuld be to visit that magical place-I can only dream , as I sit here in Colorado USA. My favorite movie of all time! Thanks for posting!
My fav of ALL TIME and 27 years later I realize it's been the most influential element in my life...besides my family of course... time to see it again!
Visited Pennan on Sept 12th. We were blessed with calm, sunny weather. spent a few hours walking the rocks on the beach and walking through the local area, taking digitals, etc. I know this is not a very manly statement...but...It was MAGICAL! One of my favorite movies and soundtracks. FN in MT
my two favorite movies of all time are Enigma films from this era. Chariots Of Fire, and Local Hero. This is a really nice tribute to Local Hero from the Culture Show.
My all time fav film. what a gem of a film, amazing eccentric characters, locales and the genius of knofler's music, it all comes to together in this magical and delightful film. my love for scotland began with this film. i wish i could be there be, it would be my idea of heaven to revisit every scene from this movie by touring the quaint and breathtaking scotland!Bill forsyth, thank you, you are a genius. god bless you for making this film and filling my heart with such unimaginable joy!!!
I have seen it at least 100 times too, I LOVE this movie, the story, the wit, the humour, the scenery, the music....... my dream is to make a call from the phone box.
Local Hero has been like an old friend go-to movie for me for many years...thanks for posting the video. I would love to view first hand the amazing Auora Borealis on the shores of Scotland Pennan....

Hello from Texas! I adore this film. It too is my favorite film. It was partly shot here in Houston. The opening scene of the conference room at Knox Oil and Gas was fimed in my friend's company's board room. I plan to hit all the Local Hero locations in the Spring -- any tips on Pennan will be much appreciated.
hello from scotland - pennan is a beautiful little coastal village , if you get the weather, sit on the beach & just take it all in - you'll get nice glow remebering all the scenes from the film, enjoy.

I always thought Mark was a good judge but, not having seen this clip before, it confirms the point.
A fitting tribute to a truely magnificent and totally un- appreciated film film by other so called experts.
