First off, they dont THINK they know it, "they" as in Geologist or Paleontologist pretty much have carbon dating down to be accurate and will continue to become more accurate as technology increases, and about the line that you quoted, he was obviously using "hell" as a metaphor, because the concept of hell has been pasted on from religion to religion as place that you go when you're bad :(
@trev8200 I have to disagree. I don't think that geologists or paleontologists know anything for a fact. Their carbon dating techniques could be completely wrong. There's no way to prove that it's correct since there's no one alive today that was alive back then to witness it all happen. It's just a guess until there's undeniable proof.
I definitively wouldn't call it a guess. As radioactive carbon dating get's more accurate, geologist find out the world is actually older than once thought, so you can look at the evidence and facts and make your own conclusion.

As this movie began, the talked about how the Bible talks about how the earth was made in the book of Genesis. But the scientists and geologists, doesn't believe it because they think that fossils of rocks were made billions of years ago...do you think that's true??? They said that earth was made of molten rock, "billions" of years ago. Do you believe it??? I don't...because if they said that earth WAS a ball of rock before or something, something or someone must have made it, how about God???
That assumes the big bang was the beginning, but if cyclic cosmology is right, there is no need for god in this equation, since the big bang would really be just a big bounce from a previous universe collapsing, and each universe is just one in an infinite cycle of expansion and contraction
Very nice documentary. Very detailed. It just goes to show what we, as humans, have achieved in knowledge very recently. Looking back at the bronze age, only 2000 years ago, we thought that a supernatural being created this planet and the people on it all descended from two individuals. In only those 2000 years since then we have gained so much knowledge, imagine what the next 2000 will hold!.
It just blows me away that science, and human beings thinking, can produce this knowledge and yet religion still clings to its books full of lies, myths and superstitions. As this movie began, the talked about how the Bible talks about how the earth was made in the book of Genesis. But the scientists and geologists, doesn't believe it because they think that fossils of rocks were made billions of years ago...do you think that's true??? They said that earth was made of molten rock, "billions" of years ago. Do you believe it??? I don't...because if they said that earth WAS a ball of rock before or something, something or someone must have made it, how about God???

That assumes the big bang was the beginning, but if cyclic cosmology is right, there is no need for god in this equation, since the big bang would really be just a big bounce from a previous universe collapsing, and each universe is just one in an infinite cycle of expansion and contraction

Very nice documentary. Very detailed. It just goes to show what we, as humans, have achieved in knowledge very recently. Looking back at the bronze age, only 2000 years ago, we thought that a supernatural being created this planet and the people on it all descended from two individuals. In only those 2000 years since then we have gained so much knowledge, imagine what the next 2000 will hold!.

i'm looking for a documentary they showed on discovery channel u.k it's like a visual timeline of the earth from the beginning all the way to now. elements do not have consciousness, so they do not have to "know how" to do something. rather, they strongly attract and repel each other. imagine you take a magnet and a piece of metal, and of course the metal will rush towards the magnet and cling to the magnet. How did the non-living metal "know" how to do that? Well, it doesn't "know", it's something called magnetism.
