I believe you have to be 18 to work anywhere at Cass now but you have to have at least 1 year of railroad experience to be a fireman. Which at the moment the don't need any.

Yes, you would have to be a brakeman or work on the track crew for at least one year or until a fireman's position opens then it will take 5 years or more to become an engineer.
