Painting the abusers as freaks does less help than showing that monsters can be anywhere, and denying the impulse is what makes us good people.

@InsaneRequest She couldn't leave the house. I haven't seen all of this movie so I don't know if they show it, but she was actually tied down a lot of the time. At one point the real girl tried to escape, but was caught and beat unconscious.

Actually the movie was tame! There was no gentle towel wash. Paula didn't feel bad either. She helped her mother dunk Sylvia in a tub of scalding hot water to "Clense" her cause she was dirty and then Paula would put salt on Sylvia's wounds after the torchuring bath ritual which was often.
@amdreamgirl23 I think the reason for those kinds of scenes is to show that Gertie really just needed someone. She really did love her kids but her mental illness overpowered that love to show a truly evil and unforgivable part of her.

Actually the movie was tame! There was no gentle towel wash. Paula didn't feel bad either. She helped her mother dunk Sylvia in a tub of scalding hot water to "Clense" her cause she was dirty and then Paula would put salt on Sylvia's wounds after the torchuring bath ritual which was often.

@amdreamgirl23 I think the reason for those kinds of scenes is to show that Gertie really just needed someone. She really did love her kids but her mental illness overpowered that love to show a truly evil and unforgivable part of her.

ellen page did amazing in this film the only thing i didn't like about it is they humanized gertrude and paula they were not like that in real life i hope they are burning right now!!

Disgusting how ill-minded and not caring about anyone but themselves people were. This makes me very sad. I can't believe the little kids kept doing it johnny looked at least 10 he should have known not to do just a cruel thing.
