saddam really screwed up kuwait when he was forced out .cant figure out why they would relight the wells though.only thing i can think of is maybe the oil was pooling up making it impossible to work on .anyone know?

A couple reasons to relight the wells. One is if the valves could not be repaired at the time. You have to remember, there were hundreds of wells on fire at once, and crews and supplies were stretched very thin. Another is if oil was spraying or running over the roadways. A well would pump out 10,000 barrels of oil a day, and would cause more of a hazard if left to flow rather than being burned off.
