You guys probably did get an A, given the state of the educational system in America. Komunyakka did not mean to be "extremely serious." That just says you didn't really read the poem, didn't really think about what it was saying.
When you've faced real pain, loss, and trauma in your life, maybe you'll realize that "serious' and "funny" aren't the relevant categories for expression, poetic and otherwise.
