What is deplorable about the passing of this particular law is that the good, law abiding people may have to take certain actions from a gunsmithing perspective to ensure that after a day at the range they aren't wrongly incarcerated for something they didn't do.
Here in NY, our microstamp bill (S4397A) has passed assembly. However, due to the current state of our senate, it has'nt been acted upon by that body so there's still time to flush it down the friggin' toilet where it belongs. All NY'ers, get on your senator's case and tell them NO on S4397A. I have.
1) Here's a different, simpler, and possibly more plausible scenario: criminal steals a law abiding gun owner's gun and commits a crime with it. This is how most guns used in crimes are obtained anyways.
2) How would a $500 tax on each bullet help? Bullets would just get stolen more often.
Actually the scenario that he depicted is quite plausable. But it most likely won't send you to jail since the rifling won't match. But they might try and say you swapped barrels. But yeah this law doesn't 100% solve the problem. The problem is of course not the guns but rather people that want to commit crimes and hurt people.
Not surprising since Turners is a chain store. It looks like AB1471 may never go into effect though, as the bill states that the microstamping technology has to be patent free and available from more than one company. Currently the technology is only available from one company, and they hold the patents on it. And they want to make money on their patent.
Arnold didn't write the bill. It was written by Mike Feuer (D) of Los Angeles. And then passed by the State Assembly, and then moved on to the State Senate. The problem is, if Arnold does not sign it, but does not veto it, it will still go into law as an unsigned bill. He has to veto it in order for it to be shot down.
To begin, I'm not supporting this, however there is more to it than you say, for one if the only evidence is this stamp it would most likely be dismissed, otherwise it would serve to support evidence rather than prove guilt.
Oh I could have gone on for some time on the details. But that could have turned into a multi-part video. And most YouTubers have short attention spans :P So I kept it short and more or less to the point.
You make a very good point; a simple one that I hadn't considered. My opposition to the "technology" is the ease in which it is defeated. A file or a little rubbing compound will render the microstamp dies unreadable, as will normal wear if a weapon is fired frequently. It's a total feel-good measure that will prevent zero crimes, but will make several people very rich.
The markings on the firing pin are easy enough to remove by replacing the firing pin. But there is two others in the breach that are harder to remove. And eve if worn down, between the other markings, they could still extrapolate what it is.
But then there is the fact most crimes involving hand guns are committed with unregistered firearms. All this does is give the government another form of power over gun owners.
The whole idea is a waste of time. Locating the legal gun owner might be useful in 1% of all shootings. What it serves to do is raise the cost of owning a firearm, taking them out of reach of the poor; those who need them most.
Congress is infamous for instituting "closing the barn door after the cow has escaped" legislation because it's easy, not because it's effective.
In my opinion, they "The Govt" is going about this all wrong! I agree with you that if someone wanted to set someone up, it would be very easy by the scenario in which you stated!
Revolvers and brass catchers. I have no guns never have never will.

Duh, I would just use a revolver and no brass left at the scene. Another dumb law indeed.

Heres what you do, its simple.
Take a piece of medium sandpaper to your firing pin. DONE! No more micro stamping! :)
If they pass that law in US. The sandpaper trick will be applied to all of my future firearm purchases.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
A tax on each bullet of $500.00 is a good start.

All I'd have to do is remove the stamper from the gun, rob my bullets, and run. SOOO hard.

A highly unlikely scenario you depicted. Haven't still arranged my viewpoints on mircostamping...sounds good, but need more information.

I was talking to guys at Turners in Pasadena and their response was, "I'll jump through hoops for the government to get a gun".
What idiots. There will be a day when there are no more hoops.
