I'm good friends with Great Big Sea. Alan is a family friend of ours so he used to come over all the time and play a few songs. And sometimes they would all come over and have a beer with us. I used to go backstage at concerts with my guitar and we'd play a few songs backstage.
during music class in our school here in Canal Flats, British Columbia, years ago we had to sing this song. I think it was in the year President Kennedy of USA was assinated.
Had the great pleasure of living in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Cape Breton and Prince Edward Isle. I live in California and have missed it there since.
I deeply admire them for being able to sing a line like "I don't want your maggoty fish, they're no good for winter," without cracking up. I can never do it.
@violetjm Huh. I'll ask around, then. I don't have this CD- I'm in the process of getting a complete GBS discography, but unfortunately I'm not there yet. One of their few faults (or perhaps their only fault) is that they tend to be unspecific about these sorts of things a lot. Have you read the liner notes on Fortune's Favor about not knowing who played what?
@MahSchoolworkMusic - Yes, I did read all that stuff about someone claiming to have played this or that and no one admitting to having played something or other. Kind of funny. I agree with you about the occasionally omitted details being perhaps their only fault. They are so amazing. I'll let you know if I find any info on that jig. I searched a bit and so far, no luck.
@violetjm I think my favorite part was that despite insisting that he didn't know how, Séan was credited with playing the banjo. I think it was the banjo, at least. :looks helplessly at large stack of CDs by desk:
@MahSchoolworkMusic - I might've found that jig. Try searching Rakes of Kildare. There's a version posted by HenfieldWill. I think it's the same jig. I had searched Cape Breton jigs and, after listening to about a dozen, I found one by Adam LeBlanc, which sounded very familiar. The version posted by HenfieldWill is the version that sounds most like the interlude in I'se the B'y. Now I discovered this HenfieldWill guy, who plays mandolin and is amazing.
@NLTreasure Yea if they were not strict christians lol. We are having a huge party for my cousin who just got enaged now that should be fun. Yea a bunch of Newfie's together that is a party I love to be involved with lol.

Don't k now what u mean???

@NLTreasure The tune they play as an interlude in the middle.
MahSchoolworkMusic 1 year ago
@NLTreasure the bridge part where the key changes and goes into a jig that comes just before the last short verse.

@MahSchoolworkMusic To the best of my knowledge, that's just a bridge...

@MahSchoolworkMusic - Now I'm curious. All I could find on the CD liner notes is that it's a Cape Breton fiddle jig.
