I haven't heard a sixpence album to date that I didn't like. They were one of the first alternative bands that caused me to listen to the deeper meaning of music. I still remember listening to their album This Beautiful Mess nearly 15 years ago. Great music - great memories. :D
The origin of the band's name It comes from a book by C. S. Lewis called Mere Christianity. A little boy asks his father if he can get a sixpence a very small amount of English currency to go and get a gift for his father.
The father gladly accepts the gift and he's really happy with it, but he also realizes that he's not any richer for the transaction. C.S. Lewis was comparing that to his belief that God has given him, and us, the gifts that we possess, and to serve Him the way we should, we should do it humbly, realizing how we got the gifts in the first place.
Beaufiful song, I remember sitting in room late at night when I sixteen listening to this song again and again and balling my eyes out over my stupid first love and feeling like the world was caving in, now I see that I was just on a journey that would lead to a joyful life with my soul mate who I met four years later.
I got to meet her a few years back, after a session. She was super shy. Looking back, getting her autograph must have been crazy to her. She's just so talented, like genuinely in it for the art and expression. I told her, looking into her eyes, "Please never stop making music."
What? She replies to me all the time...just kidding, I have yet to post there. Leigh's admitted in an old blog that she's a bit flighty, many gifted artists are. She's probably got a lot going on as a single mom, working to pay the bills & all. Leigh's also on Twitter, but only infrequently.
I remember seeing them at a tiny Church concert in Augusta Ga. before they hit it big. All us guys were enthralled with Leigh since she was around our age & very much had that girl next door thing going on. I'll never forget, they broke about half way through their set & wandered down into the crowd to just chill & talk for a bit. One of my fondest concert memories. That was back in the day when they still had Tess.
I love how in this concert, there seemed to be a war between the crowd and the band about the inflatable ball. But Leigh looked pretty down during the performances.
A mesmerizing, beautiful song. I have always held the album this came from as one of my most favorites. Seeing this performed live by the great musicians and voice that Sixpence is has touched my heart. Thanks for the post!
@skott4tube, this concert, CREATION FEST, was held in 2003, in Hershey, PA. Leigh would have been 27 at the time. Leigh (then married) got pregnant just a few months following this concert, and the band broke up in 2004. Many fans are aware that Matt & Leigh reformed the band in late 2007, put an EP & a Christmas album together, and are close to releasing a full-legnth album (STRANGE CONVERSATIONS), the first since the 2004 release of DIVINE DISCONTENT.
I agree. The "new" Leigh Nash seems worldly and not innocent anymore. Sad that she has changed. I don't think it's for the better. I still luv her and wish all the best to her. She really has some great songs that don't get the credit they deserve.
@argentohammer oye tio ni por enterado te das hace añissimos añales que esta disuelta la banda. aunque yo me conformaria con ir a ver a Leigh Nash digo me queda mas cerca.
Matt or Leigh in an interview said this song is about Matt Slocum's homesick yearnings for the San Francisco Bay...apparently he spent some time there.
As with all art/lyrics, it's open to interpretation. The parachutes are of course snow flakes, which sets the scene. Leigh's singing is full of yearning, which befits the song and its mood. It suggest mild regret and fond memories of days gone by. I love especially the imagery of bridges "spanning" - relationships and friends that she no longer could see easily. She misses them like she misses the warm sun in this snowy scene. But the snow is not the bad guy - it's just different.
omg r they back together? i listened to them around the time i was 5 to 8 yrs old n they were just a catchy band but i lost my cd's. i bought new ones last year and i cant stop listening to them. this song makes me cry... its touching (no homo) :P
Arguably my favorite too, maybe along with Breathe Your Name. But is it my ears, or is Leigh a little off with some of those notes? I still love them all the same. Will be seeing them live Dec.5th. I'm so glad they're back together, and I already downloaded the new EP.
She does seem a bit off. Maybe she felt sick. Even so, it still sounded great. Leigh can do no wrong in my eyes. Hey, after you see them live, would you mind telling me how it was?
And I'm also insulted that my local Best Buy doesn't carry Sixpence albums. I wanted to buy the new album soon, and they don't even carry them! I now hate Best Buy.
Concert was last night. It was a true Group Concert, with Leeland first, followed by 6p, Sara Groves, and the second half JoC, but they all appeared together after the Leeland set, and musicians freely floated in and out throughout. Leigh was fine, especially after she got warmed up. What she suffered from initially was a lack of confidence. She'll never be 100% pitch perfect, I don't think - was a little weak when dueting with Dan Haseltine...
... but her sweet voice was there for the most part. Matt was fantastic on both guitar and cello. Everyone did all Christmas songs. I bought the 6p and Sara G X'mas albums, and they're great. I got to meet hug & pose with Leigh during intermission + offered her encouraging words. Poor woman's been through so much last 2 yrs. I'm awaiting the pic from those 3 young ladies fr Melbourne, who kindly complied with my request to have it sent to me. With a 3rd row seat, I didn't have my camera!!!
I was @ Irvine Meadows/Verizon Amphitheater on Apr. 27 & listened to SPNtR perform Million Parachutes...Leigh was mostly dead-on, even though she said she sang with a cold she got from Henry, her 5 yr old. That was their first sizable, live appearance after having reformed the band; wish Dale Baker was back among them...
Also saw Leigh tour with Delerium, Sept. 18th @ Anaheim, CA's, House of Blues. She was out of her element with that band, but otherwise, she was her usual incredible self.
she looks like an amateur singer, but I love her voice!
