When I lived near Los Angeles they would all gather on the spring door at night, like a whole army of them. The bigger ones make loud hissing noises when you pick them up. Here in the desert you hardly ever see them (Thank Zeus)

I think Atrax robustus from Australia is considered more dangerous. It is certainly more aggressive. Widow spiders are pretty timid and rarely bite unless they feel threatened or are defending an eggsack. I handle mine all the time. Besides, healthy adults almost never die of widow bites.
