a lot of poorly educated ppl out there putting down others, this is WKF style of points sparring ( not shotokan only ) its quite soft compared to other karate tournament rules, but just remember all variations of fighting contests have weaknesses ! MMA would be THE most realistic , but it still has rules.WKF rules are strict , you wont learn how to fight doing it , but it will help improve some of the skills needed to fight ( distance , timing , reflexes etc etc ) in a safe environment. osss
@shingitai333 What do you mean by REAL fighting by the way? Average professional MMA fighters doesn't know REAL fighting in my opinion. Here's a typical example. Japanese Jujitsu was created during war time to fight multiple opponents who also uses weapons, and teaches striking and weapons as well, while Brazilian Jujitsu was made purely to fight 1 on 1 under a set of rules. Fighting in tournaments and fighting in reality is a different thing. Don't mix it up.
@cruelgrotequeblood ... couldnt agree more ! ... I didnt mention anything about " real " fighting ? ... but I did say that MMA would be the most realistic yes ! ... in this era ! , and yes , its far different from the past , and tournaments are not real fighting ! ( that was the point ) mixed up or not, everyone still requires a form of practice no matter what type of training they do. I respect all forms of Kobudo but personally Im not interested in training wth weapons as for legal reasons !
@shingitai333 When I meant "real" fighting, I don't mean some teenager's backyard fighting. Fights between adults quickly resulted to life or death situations in some cases from my experience. I've only had a few of those, like when a guy tried to stab and slice me with a knife. I've done MMA, Muay Thai, Karate, and boxing, but Karate really helped me in that situation.
PS: Traditional Karate was created to fight multiple opponents using swords and they've actually won some war with bare hands.
@cruelgrotequeblood ... I hear you loud and clear , have a very similar background to yourself by the sound of it , even to the stabbing part , I didnt realize I had been until afterwards tho . I have done all the same types of training as yourself but the Karate was always my main passion , now bjj is my new addiction , I just wanted to know what to do in a ground situation , mainly I want to get back up again ! ;-)
Im well aware of the history of karate-do, have you seen Kuro Obi ? great movie
@shingitai333 It seems like this realistic fighting you're talking about is not fighting in particular from my perspective. Or does it include any given situations? Traditional martial arts has proved that it actually works and succeeds during war time in those days. So I don't understand how MMA is better even though I do MMA as well.
@cruelgrotequeblood ... no I never said it was better mate , just more realistic than the other forms of modern combat sport ... as it involves such a mixture of arts ... but yes , there are no live weapons , and it still has rules ... which was mentioned in my first comment ... only real fighting is real , controlled fight sports will only help to hone the right skills , its a good start ... but only the real situation can test you and what you train ... osu
@shingitai333 Okay, I see your point. By the way, have you ever checked out the history on boxing? It first started in Egypt and it was used for military martial arts in Rome and it was pretty much like MMA with much less limitations. Just wanted to share this in case you didn't know, because I thought it was interesting.
@cruelgrotequeblood ... yeah the evolution of boxing is just as interesting as any other combative art for sure !
I did a lot of research of the history of many different systems, was just over 10 years ago now, so its all a bit hazy in my memory but I recall a lot of interesting concepts / theories that really surprised me !
This was before internet days for me so it was books and magazines research , but one thing in particular was also the theory that the Asian styles had European input.
@shingitai333 I agree, boxing has one of the most interesting histories. The most interesting part was its evolution but since it seems like you're aware, I guess I don't have much to say. I brought up boxing because so many people are just unaware of its history. And another thing is that a lot of people thinks kickboxing was created in America. I actually thought so too at first though.
Anyways, that's about it with what I wanted to say.
@cruelgrotequeblood ...no problem , I guess thats a point I was trying to make to others in my initial comment , just hoping to educate others about whats actually happening in this video , that it is "WKF" style kumite training , it has rules, " very complicated ones " that help to hone important skills for fighting , just another part of the evolution of the martial arts, ppl may not like or agree with it , but its happening now , and top WKF athletes are worthy, and the MMA fighters. peace !
@cruelgrotequeblood ... I have been trying to find the article the last few days , I'm sure I still have it somewhere ?!? ... but I think it was a basic theory that freelance Warriors left behind from Alexander the Great's army during that conquest of the globe had a big influence on the Chinese styles ? ... like I said its a bit hazy in my memory now but it made some sense when I read it and looked at the dates involved and what was happening in the world in those times.
all this jumping with hands hanging near their arses makes me puke. what is wrong with them? After 10 years of such bullshit everything will look the same: karate, TKD,Kung Fu... Like there's only two ways of MA: redneck knockabout in MMA or this...jumping.
The white guy with aka (red belt) is actually quite decent, but he is too cocky and fights with his hands too low. He has quick hands and scores a couple of points. But thats it.
In most of the Karate tournaments I've been to I could've brought in a homeless person off the streets and put a gi on him and let him fight! It's sad to say but nobody would know the guy had no karate training after comparing him to the other karate ka there.
athletic guys and good work in that respect but it's hard for me to put aside the point sparring aspect of this style of tourney. Everything's so slappy
No disrespect, but I'm confused. Is this a demonstration of different techniques using kumite as a platform for display, or slow ju-ippon kumite? Just curious, because it looks like the defender almost never counters, and the ma is constantly being violated with no attack. Or, is part of your kihon to do a close ten no kata type sparring? Just trying to understand what I am watching.
looked like tkd. i dont believe in bouncing you can get caught in the middle of a bounce and you can be taken for a ride. just keep in motion so you dont telegraph your moves. other then that you were slow no power and no control. and whats the pads for????? i dont think you could hurt any one wit any of those kicks.hahahah
I like seeing how some people, deem themselves experts at martial arts and feel the need to try and lower other people to make themselves feel and look bigger, i work in the martial arts field and see this way to often... encourage other people, great for you guys giving feedback and trying to help others get better with their training...
Sorry, fellas, I ´m an old school guy from the last century, practicing Shotokan and Wado-Ryu since 1980.
What u wanted to show was ment to be fast. In german, "fast" means "almost", and thats what I saw, "almost-karate".
I wouldnt have uploaded this vid using such a title. Some techniques were clean and nice, but there s too much of nothin, too much "TORIMASEN" in it (for ex. the Tsukis 1-2-3 at 4:19, ridiculous). Not impressive.
LESS is MORE. Whom do you wanna teach with this? Oss.
Almost karate, haha that's good :) Actually fast was supposed to push me to get better faster. Reading some flame is good for practice, and this isn't about teaching anything to anyone actually.
(I did get better btw - I'm the guy with the 3 tsukis)
@Daguerre20 I congratulate you on posting video of yourself sparring...it takes guts to put yourself out there showing your stuff against an opponent who not only is not cooperative, but actively hitting you back...in the face if he can. Secondly, I believe that your response to the 1RealDeal is very humble, very nice, and did not repay the tone of his rather disrespectful and unkind remarks. He may have couched them as "constructive criticism," but that wasn't his intent. You guys did well!
@The1RealDeal Great comment! I'm from Germany and although I started Karate in this century (2001) I totally agree with you. My Sensei is also old school and I'm so grateful for this. To me this vid shows some sport, not Karate at all. "Ikken hisatsu" is all I want to say.
My only comment is on the punching combos. a lot of times you end up not in stance, either too high or floating on only one foot (the fornt one). Just try to finish your punch in kumite stance so if you miss your punches, you are set to defend on a counter. Also, that's a bad idea to do it on the street since you can be taken down easy, even by an untrained person.
I agree, I do shotokan and this to me is equivilent to cuddling. Fast sparring? This is slow/soft sparring. When we spar in my dojo its twice as fast as that, and its still considered soft/safely. Protective shoes/gloves I could understand if these guys really were 'fast sparring', but since its not, eh? If this is just a 'warmup' then maybe it should be called such. Hell, even our warmups are more intense than this. I mean no offence btw, just saying.
I've seen him here and there. Videos of course but also the wasquehal tournament a few years back. He coaches now. He was at the french nationals in march.
I'm sorry. are these guys ACTUALLY trying to spar? Why is it one guy makes a small move, then the other guy stands and lets the guy "score", and repeat? What the fuck is going on?
@freerunninfrog13 Seriously, mean, even someone who knows next to nothing about martial arts can guess what they are doing? Nah, just jokin with you, man.
Lyoto machida man... Shotokan... effective. I agree with keeping the hands up. But I think you are taking shotokan as being THIS style of karate. This is very very soft compared to real shotokan. Another bad trait of shotokan is moving away after 1 gd hit. /but thats countered by kyokushins bad trait of standing still and taking blows.
i think they arent keeping their hands up because getting hit in the sternum hurts really bad!
i personally like to keep my hands at a medium height and keep my head low so when someone strikes high i can lower my head and raise my arms in time to block or dodge but you do have a good point
"even though shotokan moves looks pretty cool, their not at all as effective as kyoukushin karate moves." don't mean to sound like a prick but please educate yourself further. kyoukushin KARATE and shotokan KARATE are both KARATE, hence same moves. Also Its not about the style but the practioner. One more thing keeping your guard invites the opponent in to get things moving when there's a stalemate ;) "why move to find your range when you can stay where you are and THEY come inyour range"
I dunno about constatnly hopping up and down. It telegraphs when you're going to attack. I know you all were just performing an exercise, but I just don't agree wit it.
yo recuerdo que cuando practicaba shotokan, era todo el dia salir de un combate para entrar en otro. terminabamos con los pies rotos y las manos hinchadas
please dont send me hate comments you guys are all really good, this is just some advice from a fellow practitioner of the martial arts way ^^ when you spar add some contact, sparring lets you test your technique without damaging your partner...cause if you did you wouldnt have a partner lol, remember this. Practice doesnt make perfect...it makes habbit, never slop through somthing, when you punch or kick, think break board! and dont pull punches go through your opponent...just not your partner.
even the black belt needs some work, they seem to drop there guard a lot, invitation to an elbow, i've practiced sho-lin, shotakon kenpo, karate, tae-kwon-do,judo and jujitsu..im not bragging the reason im saying this is, go to another dojo of another style and spar its students and even the master if you want...i did. your skills and understanding of the martial arts and movement of the body will skyrocket
i dont know.. i just dont like the tournament gi's they are wearing.. it looks alot like pajamas not a karate gi.. i wear the traditional gi, shorter jacket, shorter legs, and i always roll up my sleeves to my elbows
if he is there is no need for the kick to come all the way back to the bum. you need retraction it dosent need to come back to the loaded posistion again to put his leg down
if its traditional then the leg needs to come fully back
Actually it depends. It's nice to be able to do both. In certain circumstances (like having the opportunity to land a second kick, needing to dodge...)
I've taken a few of his kicks in the gut and I can tell you... He can kick. Note that the wood is slippery though, which hinders the heavier somewhat.
No snap to it... just some sorta odd haymaker style to try and seem fast.

hes training for sport compition correct?
if he is there is no need for the kick to come all the way back to the bum. you need retraction it dosent need to come back to the loaded posistion again to put his leg down
if its traditional then the leg needs to come fully back

Actually it depends. It's nice to be able to do both. In certain circumstances (like having the opportunity to land a second kick, needing to dodge...)

I've taken a few of his kicks in the gut and I can tell you... He can kick. Note that the wood is slippery though, which hinders the heavier somewhat.

yeah but he is not snaping his foot back to his bum at the end of the kick, you mught want to tell him that
Paitro202 3 years ago
I will. Hope he doesn't kick me hard to punish me :)
